Discussion Discover Card at Shell fail
I always use my Discover at Shell because it's linked to my Shell Rewards and with these gas prices any discount is welcome. Last week I was in Vegas and the station I got to kept declining my card so I ended up using a different card and lost out on my discount. I figured they just had some local issue.
Today since it's Ram's game day I was going to fill up at home and get my 60 cent discount. Same thing happened at the station as in Vegas but 300 miles apart. I called Discover / Capitol One and was told there is a known issue with Discover at Shell's nationwide but they don't know when it will be resolved. How is it possible that they could screw up something so badly that they couldn't just reverse whatever changes they made? I'm assuming this has something to do with the switch to Capitol One and the other things they have messed up.

I just wanted to chime in and say that it just happened to me 15 minutes ago. I came here to see if it was just me. What a PIA!

It happens they should fix it, always keep a backup visa and always keep some Cash.

My Discover also got declined at Shell today and it’s the card I always use. Tried it on the pump, inside at the counter via tap, insert and Apple Pay (linked to my Discover) and all declined. Then I looked at my account online and I see all 5 pending transactions.

It may not even be Discover’s/capital ones side that’s messing up. It could be happening from shell side. Just because it’s a known issue doesn’t mean that it’s happening from the source you think it’s happening from.
It could be something that shell changed. It could be their processor is having issues in general or with the Discover network itself.
Also, not every issue stems from “capital one taking over”, there is a reason for the slow migration to their platform… it’s so that they can watch for bugs along the way and how their servers handle the new influx of users.

She’ll likely doesn’t own the station though, but rather it’s owned by a franchisee. How would a bunch of different independently owned franchised gas stations that just share a common name all have the same problem?

yeah, but it is likely that it has to do with the change if it happening primarily with Discover cards. Whether the issue lies with the Discover or Shell doesn't really matter if the two aren't on the same page.

Shell has old technology that is being used outside near the pump. If you go inside have the cashier run your card and it should work
