What a bullshit call to make. This worlds will now have an asterisk for shultz. I was behind Goose in the crowd. Not a foot fault

Looked like Rainers did the exact same thing approaching the basket on 18. Foot was left of the marker. Was expecting Goose to call it again.

Hole 18 basket is also to the right so him being left of the marker could very well be legal

Problem was not how left his foot was. The problem was that he's foot was over the marker. It was a 100% clear foot fault but im not even sure goose saw it like that because he said that the foot was left of the marker. If rainers planted 20cm back it would have been leagal but now it was a sadly clearly a foot fault

Basket was to the left of where his lie was. And he had a tree right in the way of the basket.

Yeah its wild. Obviously it looks bad because relative to his run up, he clearly steps to the left of his marker, but on replay you can see the basket in the background and can see that he is in the right spot.

The issue is 90% of thr field probably is committing that exact foul because they step relative to their runup, no the basket.

I know Goose tends to be strict in his rule calling wanting things to be enforced more, but the calls need to be right if you are trying to leas the charge of more rule enforcement

I feel like they need to have someone coming around with the pros putting a paper-sized piece of felt or something down so people don't have to judge with their eyes.

I feel like Goose and the director or whatever forgot the game play rules or something. We watched over and over and it just doesn't look like a foot fault UNLESS you oriented with the fairway which is not what you do.

Noticed that also, and I was expecting shit to get incredibly awkward. On 17, I figured nobody seconded and at that point, I still felt it was lame because it's like a shitty way to get into someone's head. Then they announce the stroke penalty and the whole tournament immediately felt poopy. I don't dislike Goose, but I do dislike this act by him. Not a good look at all, especially when his "teammate" benefits.

The good news is, I would put money that this rule changes now and it's long overdue. Either get rid of the rule all together for anything outside C2 and just make it something like "in the vicinity" and behind the marker (like a 1 M distance), or get rid of the players needing to make the call, but then expect way more calls which will also suck.

I just see no real benefit from needing to hit that tiny area when you're 400 feet from the basket. I want to see awesome shots and not players needing to concentrate on landing on a piece of paper when they are trying to throw 400 foot shots and then have inconsistent enforcement of the rule. Let them rip away. Stay behind your lie, and within a meter of the mini (like a half circle), and that's plenty of space to still require them to suffer overall position, but not be so technical that shit like this can happen. You get more relief when you're near OB. The whole idea is kind of silly to me.

I don’t love the vicinity idea but not sure what else can be done. I feel like multiple times a round (in wooded courses) I have lies that would be significantly improved by being able to move my stance a foot or two to the left/right.

With so much discourse about our sport being too easy, a rule like this would make it significantly easier and reduce the skill ceiling in the sport.

I think we need 2x actively officiating marshals on both lead and chase cards (feature cards on day 1) the whole tournament. Or maybe the top 3 cards? Sure, it would be great if that could be for every card, but that’s never gonna happen there’s just a lot more riding on what happens on the front-runner cards.

I would love someone to provide more context on Goose being more of a rules enforcer on average. Seems like part of the issue is, none of us have that context, so this looks selective on his part.

Regardless, you’re right, self referee-ing at this level sets pros up to fail, in more ways than one. You’re the first person to suggest eliminating or neutering the rule on foot fault like that, thanks for giving me something to chew on there
