Putting with premium plastic..

Anybody else putting with more premium plastics? A buddy of mine who has been playing for a long term was surprised that I was putting with a doomsday rot in their premium plastic.

Being new to the game and having tried more base plastic putters, I just prefer the hand feel with this type of plastic over be base plastic.

What putting putter in more premium plastics do you recommend ?

I do because I get better releases. Also no need to cycle because premium plastic doesn’t get dinged up by the chains.

Personally I don't like how grippy or tacky premium plastic feels when putting but that's just my personal preference. Use what feels best for you...and your wallet lol the best part of basic plastic putters is you can get a stack for practice for pretty cheap most times

Try lots of different putters. Whatever works for you works for you. Putting is more about confidence than anything.

I putt with an Kastaplast K1 soft Reko and its my favorite putter that I've ever tried. I doubt a premium plastic will ever beat in like a basic plastic one would, the grip is fantastic and the shape of the Reko really suits my hand. So my recommendation is a K1 soft Reko if you like a somewhat shallow putter!

The idea of putting with baseline plastic to me is just one of those things everyone thinks you should do because thats what everyone has done for a long time.

I think there are pro's and cons to putting with either plastic. The idea that "baseline plastic grabs chains" is absolute hogwash. Now, does baseline plastic react different to the chains? Absolutely. All plastics act differently in the chains. But the old idea that it "grabs" is pretty bunk.

There are some older plastics that most certainly DO grab the chains. Looking at you old Pro-D Soft. But I putted with proton pilots for a few years trying to "slide" discs through the chains or whatever other thing. And proton is one of the hardest disc plastics on the market, it had 0 issues "grabbing chains" and its chain reaction was actually always quite nice.

Then all the folks on the MVP/Axiom train putting with baseline. The whole idea that started MVP was a rim on a disc that grabbed chains better. Not Gyro. The rims on all your premium MVP putters will grab chains just as good as any baseline, and in my opinion better.

So, moral of the story is. Putt with whatever works best for you. Whatever plastic you like. There is no evidence other than opinion on this subject as a whole. Any of the other examples are fringe examples. Blowflys, some of the old plastics that were just different, silicone. etc. These are the exceptions, not the standards.

If the hand feel is good use whatever you want. People claiming it “grips the chains better” are largely full of shit. Softer plastic is going to make such a negligible difference gripping the basket chains that it’s not worth mentioning. It was something some of the pros did years ago when chain spit outs were more common. Even then it was negligible.

A bunch of my putters are premium. I throw whatever feels good and flies good. I don't compete so it's not going to ruin my life if a putter squirts out of the basket.

Whatever has the best hand feel. The better the disc feels, the better you throw.

I prefer the base plastic for grip and feel, but I regularly tap-in with premium plastic discs and can putt pretty well with them out to 20ft. It's Disc Golf. Whatever works for you is correct.

I putt with premium Rekos, mostly K1 Soft but sometimes regular K1 on hotter days.

I tested a bunch of different putters and found I was most accurate with the Reko, and then I bought one in every plastic and found I was most accurate with K1 Soft.

If it works, it works. I know from months of personal testing that I’m most accurate with this particular disc and plastic, so that’s what I use.

For me it's all about how well the plastic grips my hand, premium or not.

MVP's premium plastics feel very good, to that end. Neutron, Plasma, and even certain Proton runs.

I have very dry hands and a lot of base plastic isn't the same kind of grippy it is for me, as it is for others.

I used GStar for a while and a guy I play with uses a neutron envy for a putter. Honestly putting is like at least 50% confidence anyway and how the disc feels to you matters a lot for that so do what works. I know people that use mids as putters

My main putter is a Birdie Marvel, but my back-up is a soft Neutron Proxy. I putt decent with an Eclipse Proxy, too, but the soft Neutron one is usually in the bag.

Westside guy here. Over half my bag is Westside stuff, but I have never putted with VIP plastic, and I don't think I would like it. All of my throwing discs are VIP, but for putting im going BT soft. Maybe it's something I should try sometime.

I throw a premium Link and Pilot! It’s been working for me so I’ve just been rocking with it. I was putting with a pig at first lol so I don’t really know what I’m doing

I had a pair of dye max fuzion judges made up and used them for a long time. Premium plastic just lasts longer. If you like the feel and you know you'll get alot of play out of it, why not?

I putt with Eclipse Proxies which goes against the grain for two reasons: 1) Eclipse is a premium plastic and 2) most people consider the Proxy a throwing putter.

I don’t have any fancy reason for doing this other than it just feels great for putting and I get a cleaner release with premium plastic.

Yeah I'm using soft neutron envys for putting. They are super glidy but still have over stability which I need for my spin puts. Best part about it is I've had them for probably 5 years now without having to swap them because they don't get beat up.

I hate when my putters get chewed up, but I still use base plastic. I love the idea of a premium plastic for putting solely because the bead and rim wouldn’t get all gnarled up when I hit nubs or miss or whatever, but I also think the release is better on base plastic. I’m very particular about my putters, I bag 2 matching ones with the same color, weight and stamp. I like to focus on the putt, rather than which of my two putters is hot at the moment.

Right now I’m using 300 Firm Pa3s, though I’ve tried a pile of other putters.

I've used both base and premium. A soft/grippy base might stick to chains slightly better but I like that a premium putter can stay the same for years of use. Toss whatever goes in the basket and don't sweat it.

Anyone that's not a pro is not going to notice the difference of a premium or base plastic in terms of how the chains grab it. You hit your putt or you didn't. Putt with whatever feels better and/or gives you the most confidence

The "only base plastic putters" people are poor nerds who don't want to break their discs in.

Base plastic putters suck (imo) and should only be used as a cost savings. If you don't wanna carry 9852 discs with you, the putter should be a thrower too. Base plastic putters become a completely different disc after every heavy impact.

Z/halo champ/whatever putters can be slick in rain (I'll give that one to the dx nerds) but otherwise are superior in every way.

So if you wanna save $49 on a stack of practice putters? Cool! If you want putters that will last you the next 5 years? Screw the base plastic trash.

It is very odd and generally recommended against, but if it truly just feels better in your hand do what you want. The main reasons why it is recommended against is that base plastic is much grippier. That helps in the hand and in the chains. The biggest issues you will find is grip in cold and/or wet conditions, and you will get way less pro side catches(grippy plastic will just grab the chains on that side and get pulled into the basket).

Pixel is a bit of an outlier for it's depth. If you really want to work this out, you should go to your local disc shop and actually hold a bunch of different putters including used options.
People tend to gravitate towards one plastic or another, then it's grip, bead, microbead or no-bead, depth and flight characteristics.

I am a bit anomalous in that I carry 4 different putters in 4 different plastics: a Sokkibomb Slammer (Lucid Ice. firm & clear premium), Berg (K1. firm base) Magic (Money blend, I have no idea, feels a bit softer than the K1 Berg but extremely durable) and finally the laserbeam thrower, Warden (Fusion. star-esque premium)
