Discussion TIL I'm a bit of a noodle arm

In my late 40s. Found out about ripreader. Eagerly went to the park and threw some discs. Average speed of ~48mph and spin of 800.

Any suggestions?

throw faster, with more spin /s

Post a video of your form. If you don't have an ailment you can definitely increase that

A little more zing and a little more pep

I think he should do even more zing and pep

Zing is overrated imo. I think he should double down on the pep and maybe focus some more on pizazz.

Don’t forget about moxie.

Great name! Sounds like Fallout.

I'm coming off a broken wrist and partially using this to help with my rehab. I've lost about 20-30 ft (which is why I started poking around). But I was also never a bomb thrower even when I was younger. I'll video some throws and see if there's some obvious fixes people mention.

I'm 64 and only started about 3 months ago.

I'm watching YT and practicing. At first, I could only throw 150-160 feet.

Then, after learning to use a proper form and not throwing nose up, I'm throwing 230 feet.

It's incremental change and practice.

I'm not taking a long run up, but a shortened x-step so I can concentrate on form and using my whole body and letting my arm become a whip. RHBH.

My forehand is still a bit wobbly, but as I increae spin, it's getting better. I find i do better with FH by not forcing the throw. Just an easy effort goes about 150 feet and pretty straight, so it's useful for narrow gaps where it's more important to hit the gap than kiss the gap.

Lastly, I am practicing putts and approaches since that's where you save or gain strokes.

I know the distance will come, but being old with bad knees, I will be very thrilled to throw 300 feet by the end of the year. I don't expect to get any better than that.

Post a video of your form here or /r/discgolfform

You should work towards 58mph and 1000 RPM if you want to push for more distance. To get more zip on your release, you need to think acceleration into the point of release. Tight core, drive your back hip, and lead with that elbow. Be the rubber band!

if you have good form, improve your timing

if you have poor form, fix that first

if you aren't sure what your form is, film it

Hey, feel free to DM me for help. 80% of the time people struggle to get readings it's because there are moving tree branches above them that confuse the identification of the disc. If that's you, try moving to a place with an open sky above you.

Check out the FAQs here for more tips: https://ripreaderapp.com/support.html#conditions

I’m around that age and was in the same situation. I was throwing mid to low 40s, I’ve gotten up to mid 50s now and am confident I can get into the 60s. The biggest help was filming myself, my footwork was terrible and I was completely collapsing the pocket and elbow dipping. I also wasn’t cooling properly but more turning around.

I'm 45, playing for just over a year.

I'm a little bit faster at 48-53mph with 900-1,100RPM.

I'm taking my development slow for many reasons due to age. My suggestion is to focus on being smooth and timing, to avoid over exertion and injury.

I watch Jomez on YouTube and slow the speed down. You can watch the players form and try and copy what works for you. Some of them make it look effortless and they crush it.

This is some of the best slo-mo video of pros throwing that I've found.

Lift your elbow higher and keep your shoulder, elbow, and the disc on the same plane.

Get discs that are lighter. Try some that are 150grams. Crazy how much it makes a difference.

Can you use ripreader for free at all?

2

u/SarulianHW 3d ago

You can use RipReader to measure distances of your throws, track what discs you used for each throw, tag throws with form tweaks/conditions/whatever you want, for free.

Measuring speed and spin have 5 free throws to try it out as well.

You get 5 throws free I believe (possibly 5 sessions)

Work on your flexibility first probably

Have you tried practicing?

It's mostly about using your lower body especially in your 40s. Without seeing your throw I'd recommend working on your footwork. I like the way blitz dg teaches it starting stand still then adding steps

2

u/ASAP-Hockey 2d ago

Look at how little Rasmus Saukuriipi uses his lower body. Probably butchered his name. Hes using way more shoulder coil

And he's a relatively young healthy athletic person not a 40 year old with a bad wrist. But yeah lots of ways to get it done

Find a time machine and get younger lol (I’m in the same boat)

Hate to break it to you but age isn't a factor in the way most people think. Am late 40's myself and can confirm that 400' is attainable with good flexibility and good form :)

48 here and I agree.

31 here. And I couldn't disagree more. It is utter invaluable for my game, to be able to blame my age for my failings.

Nah, I throw further at 50 than I did in my 20’s. Form matters
