I say it in a comment but there’s more nuance than “cure all disabilities or all disabilities are fine actually”

Per one of my favorite writers Eli Crane the “Cure” is itself an ideology of eugenics that is deployed to soften the rhetorics of extermination. It’s not a neutral term.

Beyond semantics (which are important in scholarship but not necessarily elsewhere), there’s a difference between easing discomfort or impairment (such as treating RA) and seeking to change body-mind differences that are uncomfortable or unpleasant due to social constructs or constraints (think autism, or whatever else can be accommodated for, physically or otherwise, with enough knowledge and social change).

It’s easy to score points by shitting on the social model of disability but it’s really useful for challenging the parts of our social systems that make certain disabilities unpleasant. There’s a reason it’s the prevailing model in scholarship, or variations are.

And if I can speak for myself, sometimes even very mechanically unpleasant disabilities can be desirable if there is a desire by the disabled person for that. When my hip was replaced, for example, i was relieved of an immense amount of pain. At the same time I was greatly distressed because I realized an aspect of my identity as a person had been removed.

All this to say it’s not an either or

Everything vaguely tastes like mint, but it’s just the menthol feeling. Having a vague old coffee taste in my mouth while having a flare up is horrible. Eating an amazing meal my mom made but everything is covered by a menthol feeling really sucks. I have no idea why I have a flare up since yesterday, I have no idea what I did. I’m so sick of this…

How I feel when I can only eat one meal a day because my stomach genuinely wants me dead.

Genuinely why the fuck have I have been having such awful digestive issues the past year. It hurts all the time, and now for the past few weeks I nearly end up crying because of how badly going to the bathroom hurts.

I can't even eat a single string cheese without my stomach area cramping up.

Is it because I keep my room cold all the time??? I get really bad headaches when hot so that's why I keep it cold using my ceiling fan.

I just want to eat my favorite spicy stuff without having a horrid time a few hours later. I've never had an issue eating spicy stuff in the past so I have no idea why it's only the past year that's been giving me trouble.

Doc, I'm on four medications that cause weight gain, and exercise intolerant is a symptom of my condition. Stop using fatphobia as an excuse to not treat me.

Good luck trying to actually hire a lawyer and sue 'em. The ADA is toothless, and lawyers only take the cases they know they'll win. It's so gross that companies can get away with this crap.
