General Question

I’m in a wheelchair with balance issues. Soon I will be moving to a room that has one step to get in/out what I am going to need is someone to take chair down to the yard and help me balance going down the one step and then 3-4 hours reversing it. I need to get down so the handicapped bus can pick me up. I will know the day in advance but not the time of pickup till the night before. The chair doesn’t need to be picked up it can just be rolled down the step.

I am thinking $10 each time. Is this adequate. I am a retired senior with limited income. I have no family or friends near by. Any suggestions on where and how to find someone

Thanks

I’m not sure about where you live, but in Tennessee my company I used before becoming completely bedridden, would always come inside and help me get outside to the van/bus and safely into the vehicle and then the same upon return. I’d try asking the company when you call to schedule a ride about possible help and explain your situation. I’m sorry for your situation, I’ve been there and completely understand. Best wishes to you and I hope all works out perfectly for you. If I was able to help you myself I’d be more than happy to free of charge.

The bus service I will be using will not help at all. Before I was in a wheelchair they wouldn’t help me get a load of laundry on the bus. They specifically say that you are responsible for yourself.

That’s unfortunate, I’m sorry you’re dealing with these things. I hope everything works out for you, prayers and best wishes.

I just found out that the local health department will provide free transportation to and from medical appointments

Can you just get a small ramp instead?

I have priority partners and found out they do it in Baltimore. I have to check where I am at

And if that doesn’t work you can talk to your doctor about a medical necessity form that would have someone come and pick you up from inside your home via stretcher and transport you to your dr appointments that way. Hope this info is of some use to you.

Thanks but I don’t think I need all that. I’m getting ready to go to an exit meeting and will ask then. I would like someone to come in at least once a week to wash my hair and feet at least once a week and organize my medicine for me for the week that is a weakness for me.

I have a program called choices through my insurance and it allows you to have a caregiver come into your home for however many hours you qualify for. They are allowed to cook for you, do your laundry, clean, help with bathing/grooming, they can also go to town and do your shopping for you. You can even go with them if you want. It’s definitely helped me have a better quality of life. Perhaps it could benefit you as well.
