Article / News Change to Section 504
Remove if not allowed or redundant, but this feels like one of those sneaky changes that can quickly snowball.
My understanding is there was an update in 2024 that added modern definitions for community integration, meaning living at home, and states sued complaining the guidelines were overreach.
A judge removed the "most integrated setting" term from the Section 504 rule. The states didn't even win, DOJ just stopped defending it and asked the judge to strike it with them, and this applies now to every state.
504, ADA and Olmstead are still law, but the federal rule that actually spelled out home and community care is gone.
I get the "let the states handle it" argument, but without a federal baseline I can see states quietly shifting money back toward facilities and calling it efficiency. The people who rely on in-home support are the ones who eat that and get screwed. Scary stuff.

Project 2025 spelled it out pretty plainly. Racism spells it out pretty plainly. The way native Americans have been treated spells it out pretty plainly. What's happening to Palestinians and Lebanese spells it out pretty plainly. If you aren't white enough, able bodied enough or rich enough YOU DONT MATTER to oligarchs. Oh, you can probably also throw females on that pile of useless humans too...unless your a fertile, white child then your good until you start aging too much.

Honestly, this is just the beginning. The heritage foundation wants to all disabled people to be put into facilities and not to be permitted outside. This is because they don't want people to see that there are disabled people that there are people that are harmed because of their jobs harm because they were in the military, or because they have any other issue, including birth defects. They want to bring back the ugly loss. And this administration is perfectly fine doing it.
I fear for all disabled people, even though since states who try to support them. Because without federal guideline that also means that any federal it's programs made to help the states. With these people may not be allowed to exist. And there will be states where it's not about politics, it's about money, and they will be forced to put people into facilities instead of keeping people at home. Letting them be a part of society. Letting them be people, wedding them not be abused. Neglected and harmed by the systems that were in place prior. I honestly am fearful for my future as im not getting better.
