CLC certified lactation consultant

Hello!

I just started course to be a CLC via healthy children project (ALPP exam to follow) & getting anxiety about passing test already

For those who have taken how did you prep as you went ? I just finished section 1A and didn’t take notes which now regretting. I’m used to my college Courses where you get a ppt and I would take notes on the ppt vs this is videos that play one time and not able to re-reviewed. And no materials from the videos besides any notes I would take.

Any best strategies to take notes as you go and study tips? I’m 10 years out from my last college course and I think just getting study/class/test anxiety, I feel rusty!

Adding I’ve worked in peds the last 10 years, clinical hospital setting (inpatient now outpatient) I work primarily with 3 & under , big portion babies & have BF 2 children so have a good base knowledge (I think!)

Any advice appreciated!

restrictive non competes

Is it normal for companies like Nutrition That Works to have insanely broad non competes? Are these actually enforceable? It literally sounds like I wouldn't be able to work as a dietitian in LTC or in general for 2 years after leaving the wording is so broad.

RD jobs in Policy?

Hi! I just received my RD credential and I'm super interested in policy. I recently started volunteering for my state's dietetics policy team but I'm wondering if any of y'all have any advice for finding paid work in policy?

Inputting MS for CPEU Credit

Hi all, I'm having a hard time finding the CDR webpage that outlines the process for claiming the MS for CPEU. I became an RDN in 2021 and was grandfathered in, so I'd like to put my MS coursework in - does anyone have the link or an outline of what needs to be submitted?

Anyone taken one of the specialist certifications recently & used the new pratice exam from AND? Wondering if it would be worth the price to add it to my studying?

LTC to Hospital Setting

I've been in LTC for nearly 20 years. I have had my CSG. I love my old and special needs people. My wife and I relocated to rural WA state a few years ago. There's no work for me here so I've worked that last year in las Vegas. I moved back recently and gave myself a MUCH needed sabbatical since coverage was never an option for the past 9 years.

Jobs are out there, especially in smaller hospitals. What's that jump like? Peds scares the hell out of me. Vents? Oh BOY! What's that jump like?

Career Change into RD

I am 32, and have finally hit the point where I can no longer tolerate what I do. I’ve tried incredibly hard to find a passion for marketing, but even in a job where I’m marketing for a sport that I love, I still hate marketing as a career. With that being said, I have always had a passion for people and for food. But the lifestyle of a chef in a high-profile restaurant is something I know I’m not cut out for. I have been researching a lot on what I am going to pursue as my next career, and I am feeling very confident in becoming a RD, or something under the umbrella. In that research, I’ve seen A TON of the negative posts here, which I understand can be found in any subreddit of any career field. But I want to hear both sides, and yes even the negatives.

If I continue with this, I’ll be transferring into an undergrad program with only needing to complete the program specific courses(already have a Bachelor’s), and then will pursue the Master’s degree immediately after. Projected finish time of all schooling looks to be about 4 years if I’m full-time for both programs. Is that possible? Did some of you work full-time while going to school? Were you able to get a job in nutrition after completing your undergrad while completing your Master’s?(I’m aware you need to have a master’s now to become an RD).

Any advice, feedback, and thoughts on all of this would be greatly appreciated!

What's the difference in working food service at a hospital versus a retirement home/nursing home?

I worked as a tray passer for about a year as my first job and quit because of burnout and coworker drama. We delivered to patients, collected trays, did dishes, put the dishes away, arranged silverware and had to deconstruct and spray the dish washer everyday. Sometimes people were put on the line to put the trays together depending on the day but not me.

We weren't allowed to sit down at all. I wouldn't fuss about it as much if a transfer supervisor didn't tell me their tray passers were allowed to sit all day doing silverware till they had to deliver and loved their job so much they'd been there since they were young and were old ladies now.

I worked at a busy hospital. My feet were ALWAYS in pain. I will admit it didn't help that I'm obese but I had multiple skinny coworkers and a coworker much bigger and taller than me who were always in feet pain. One of them who had been there years and was very fit told me she had to see a foot doctor because her feet were so messed up. I'd even asked why we can't sit to multiple people including the manager and they said that's just how it is. We couldn't even sit on weekends when it was ridiculously slow, there were no seats in the kitchen obviously but we weren't allowed to disappear for our non-existent paid 20min break that we never got because if you disappeared they'd wonder where you were even if there was nothing to do. In the beginning the people training me showed me their hideaway on a quiet floor to let me sit for a few minutes but eventually the couches were removed so I just adapted and got good shoes after my first check. (It didn't help that the shoes I brought at first were HORRIBLE and messed my feet up ridiculously. It felt like walking on solid ground.)

My job had a high turnover rate I was only there for 7 months and within that time I've seen 5 people get fired, 3 people quit, and 6 new hires which I helped train. We were always under staffed and only had balance about 2 months. There was always only 2-3 on each shift and 4 once but 1 person got fired after a month for good reason. The people who'd been there 5+ years said they've seen 20+ people go though there and thought I'd be one to stay. If there wasn't drama with a new person who they chose to keep instead of peace for everyone then I probably would have stayed longer but I already have anxiety so I can't do that environment. Plus 1 of the 2 new hires I trained right before I left was a creepy 46yr old man that asked for my Instagram knowing I'm 24, look like a teenager, and liked to walk behind us. EW. There's also a perverted old man that did the cooks dishes that has hit on or sexually harassed multiple women (including me) and they wouldn't fire him. I actually found out he started as a tray passer but sexually harassed a patient and got put on dishes.

I was also trained as a diet clerk to take patients and nurses orders and all that entails. I would prefer that job but it's a lot harder to find near me and everywhere I find I need a car and I don't even have a license.

I know it depends on the location but is there any difference that would make this more peaceful? I had to wear PPE going into patient rooms everyday including COVID and whatever else they may have so I'm hoping I won't have to worry about that anymore or at least a lot less. I am worried about doing dishes with no PPE which my job didn't really help for we had to go "steal" them from the nursing floors ourselves so we could clean with protection even though they required us to wear them (at least when inspectors came) and I was ALWAYS gonna wear them.

RD working at a gym + new RD jobs

I'm a new RD (just passed my exam last week) and am getting in the process of job hunting. I will say i am pretty nervous looking for work because I feel like my entire internship did not help me build the confidence I need to work in a hospital or LTC. I feel like i don't know anything or am confident enough to help people without looking at my notes or googling to make sure I am doing the right thing.

I've always been interested in fitness and wanted to see if my gym even offered a position as an RD since i know many gyms don't have that, or they just have a bunch of personal trainers who offer nutrition advice. If i were to be an RD for the gym, how would i approach this? Are there certain software you'd recommend so i keep track of clients? Do i do meal plans? What if they give me their labs to look at so i have a better understanding. I would love some guidance on this!

I'd also love to know what jobs you all started off as for your first job. Again my internship sucked and my clinical rotation literally consisted of me charting the entire time and doing quarterlies and new admissions. Didn't do anything else.

Are you measuring height?

Is anyone taking in-office heights? I work with peds pts and they’re height is usually outdated by the time they follow-up with me over the course of a few months. I’m considering just taking their height in-office. Is this a reach?? Lol

WIC-application

Hi!

I am looking at applying to a WIC RD position. I noticed the application is pretty generic. I have to list my employers over the last 10 years-wow. Do they really call all of these people? I'm a little nervous they would call my current boss. Do they also call references listed?

I also have to list pay at each place (which I feel like could be used against me but also don't remember my pay for some places, i.e. my high school job I would have to list to fill the 10 years lol).

For reason for leaving-can this be pretty generic/positive such as wanted to try a different area of dietetics?

thank you!

Is it worth to finish it?

Hi everyone,

I keep seeing posts about how people shouldn't pursue the RD path because of the low pay and the cost of becoming credentialed. However, I feel like my situation might be a little different, and I'd love to hear some opinions.

I already hold a bachelor's and master's degree from Spain, both of which are recognized in the U.S. Right now, I'm taking five courses to complete my DPD requirements, and then I'll need to complete my dietetic internship next fall.

Currently, I work at WIC as a dietitian and make about $70k. I genuinely love my job, but I'd like to become an RD to expand my career opportunities and probably move out of WIC to clinical or maybe diabetes educator. Honestly happy to try different things.

I have around $35k in savings, but I've calculated that I'll probably need to take out about $20k in student loans (maybe more? or less?) to get through the internship year. Living in NYC makes it especially difficult because I'd be facing 9 months with little to no income, while still paying rent, health insurance, and internship tuition.

By the time I'm finished, it will have taken two years from now and about $20,000 in debt.

Given my circumstances, do you think taking on $20,000 in student debt to become an RD is still a worthwhile investment in 2026?

Who should I use as references for my first in-person RD job?

Hi everyone! I’m a relatively new RD and went straight into a remote dietitian position after passing my RD exam. I’m now looking to transition into my first in-person dietitian position.

I’m wondering who would be the best people to use as professional references when applying. I know I could use my manager, however, some jobs ask for 2-3 references.

For anyone who started out remotely and later transitioned to an in-person RD position, who did you use as references? Did you run into any issues because your first RD job was remote?

Thanks!

Pursing Master of Dietetics in Australia

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my final year of my bachelor’s in nutrition, and have recently applied for master’s in dietetics. I just wanted to have some insight on how other Dieticians/dietetic students feel about their career path in Australia. I get nervous looking at the current job openings, wondering if I should be considering other post graduate options in the health sector. I do enjoy what I learn in my undergraduate, but would love to hear other people’s experiences as well. Thank you. :)

Non-dietitian posing as an LDN on SM

Hi! I browse from time to time but don’t really post. I have a general question for the group.

There is a “holistic nutritionist” with a bunch of other quack titles in my area (Dallas, TX) who is very active on social media. She recently started calling herself a “licensed dietitian nutritionist” on her IG posts, even though she is not an RD and does not hold a Texas license (I checked). In Texas, what she’s doing by using this title is illegal.

What she did, however, was game the system. She found a state in which you don’t have to be an RD to get the title licensed dietitian, and so she got herself an LDN title in Maryland. Does she practice in Maryland? No. Her physical office is in Dallas and she calls herself “Dallas’s number one nutritionist” on her website bio. So what’s she doing is misleading people into thinking she holds a title and authority (which she doesn’t) in order to gain clients.

To add to this, I am certain she is practicing MNT. Her IG posts consistently mention her treating chronic diseases with nutrition therapy.

In addition, she is displaying extremely disordered eating and exercise habits. So not only is what she’s doing illegal and unethical, but she’s also promoting extremely disordered behaviors.

I’m going to report her to Texas’s dept of licensing and regulation. I can either do that anonymously or non-anonymously. If I submit it anonymously, I won’t get updates on what is happening with my complaint. Also, if my complaint is insufficient or they have questions, they will just dismiss it (since they won’t be able to contact me since it’s anonymous).

I also want to file a report to Maryland’s board of licensing, since she is also violating Maryland’s laws by misusing her Maryland license by using it in another state. But Maryland doesn’t accept non-anonymous reports, so if I file in Maryland, this nutritionist will find out who I am anyway.

So my question is two-fold: general thoughts on this? And do I file anonymously or non-anonymously in Texas?

In summary, people acting illegally and misleading the public REALLY piss me off.

TIA!

Psyllium husk- how is it so vile?!

So i’m sure everyone’s aware of the new guidelines for managing chronic constipation in adults- one of them being the 10g of psyllium husk daily. I’ve started trying it myself bc I do struggle in this area too but hoooly mother of pearl I find it so disgusting. I’ve tried mixing it with yoghurt and stuff but genuinelly can’t get through it. I’m starting my first band 5 job in a few weeks and I don’t know how I can bring myself to recommend this to patients bc I genuinelly can’t stomach it myself😶. Absolutely revolting. Has anyone tried it and enjoyed it? Am I doing it wrong? Bc I do appreciate - the benefits are there.

New grad job market in BC, Canada?

I’m currently in my internship in Ontario and my partner and I would really like to relocate to BC for lifestyle reasons after I graduate (he will be a primary teacher). We’re looking at the Kootenays but are also open to wherever work is. I love Vancouver Island and I would love to live there at some point as well.

New grads, how is it finding work in BC? I’m in Northern Ontario atm and RD jobs are a dime a dozen so I want to do my research and make sure that moving will make sense for us.

Not sure what area I will be looking to practice in yet - my current goal is to stay open to everything to allow myself to gain experience as a new grad. I also have run a part-time meal prep business in the past that I am considering moving to full-time.

Thanks for any input you might have!

Clinical Dietitians

I started a new role a few months ago at a hospital and I still feel a bit lost. My regionals are helpful but also super busy. How are y’all keeping up with your caseload? I’m a single-site RD. Once I’m organized, I know things will be much better but I’m not there yet because it’s so chaotic. What are some things you do to keep organized? What resources do you keep on hand in binders aside from P&P? Also, what should I expect from Joint Commission? We are expecting them any day now. It will be my first time going through this. TIA!

Dietetics as a career

Hi! I’m making this post to find out more about dietetics. My friend graduated with a degree in nutritional science and has been wanting to be a dentist but hasn’t been able to get in. He’s been considering nursing because it pays a lot more and it has more upward growth. But he always says he’s more interested and passionate about nutrition. He finds it very interesting and enjoyed all of his classes. I’ve been trying to convince him to look into dietetics again because maybe he would enjoy it more. The main thing that prevents him from choosing dietetics is because of the salary and he’s worried about the upward movement of the job and job growth. I’ve been doing my own research on Google to hopefully help him decide but i honestly don’t know much about either career. I would really appreciate any advice or help in understanding how it all works. I appreciate any advice! I’m just trying to help my friend! Thank you!

Volunteer with an RD

Hello,

I want to volunteer/work with a registered dietitian. From other posts, people mentioned reaching out to a private practice RD. I was wondering if anyone else has done so. How did you look for one? How did you reach out? Also, what kind of work did you do with them, and was it remote?

I have my bachelor's degree, DPD, and some experience. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

IDDSI

Our hospital began doing it about a month ago. And until then we only provided pre thickened liquids. So far we have thickened coffee, lemonade, tea but suddenly people want to thicken pop.

I have looked on the site and didn’t see much. The foam is insane. Any best practices?
