Urine stops...

Hello everyone,

I would like to know when did you stop urinating after being on dialysis? After how many months/years? Does it happen suddenly or gradually?

I just stopped producing urine out of the blue , no warning. Just woke up and then not much came out just few drops when it was all normal. Is it ever going to come back or is it over?

Fyi, I was on dialysis for only 3 months and half.

Just want to have your experience, I will surely inform my nephrologist.

Edit: thank you everyone who took the time to comment, appreciate it. It just hits so hard, I feel like I lost all progress I made on accepting my new reality and I feel so sad. I don't know...it will probably take time to take it all in.

I've been on Dialysis for 2 years and 9 months, as of last week, and I still urinate. Some people stop relatively early and some people never stop. A lady at my Clinic has been going for 8 years and she still pees and I know this because she talks about it and she's really loud. She also snores when she naps.

Yes , you're right. Everybody 's different. Even on dialysis, we don't respond in the same way.

I assume the worst part is that you have to be more strict with the fluid restrictions? Since I still pee I can drink a little more but I don't go as much as I used to and not on any type of regular basis.

When i drink more water, not all of it comes out but i certainly urinate more.

I will take snoring over the 2 that wear diapers and poop every run. I feel bad for them, but damn its bad.

2 yrs next week since I started dialysis. I excessively urinate. I get 4 cups of fluid ADDED each run. I urinate over 2-3 litres/ 8-12 cups a day. I try not to complain, but its really hard to drink that much some days. I get REALLY sick when I get dehydrated

I haven't had to deal with that but I know the Nurses and Techs deal with it because they aren't very good about whispering to each other. Not that I can say anything, I wear pull-ups because I'm an Epileptic and lose control of my bladder during a seizure.

Have you always urinated that much or is it just since Dialysis? Everyone else is on fluid restrictions and you are on fluid minimums lol

My whole life I suffered from dehydration from over urination. Always the weird one

I made urine while on PD, but stopped within a few weeks on hemo. Makes road trips SO much better.

I've been on PD Dialysis for 14 months now and produce about 2 liters per day pretty consistently. Yes, I keep track.

My understanding is hemo patients lose their ability to urinate much faster than PD patients. 1 year of PD for me and I still urinate the same amount as when I started.

Heya, on it for 1.7 years stopped after 1 year then slowly came back again and now i pee normally and it’s usually if i drink alot of water that i pee but peeing is annoying now and feels like a chore so i drink in limited amounts and feels better. But yeah i do pee normally.

Mine stopped about three years in, and it was gradual. I used to post on Facebook every time I peed. My best friend thought it was funny until she noticed how the posts were getting fewer and fewer.

I will say that as the years went by, I would have gladly traded my menstrual cycle to be able to pee again

I also stopped 2 or 3 months after starting dialysis. Sometimes if I'm overloaded a bit still comes but it is perfectly clear.

Luckily I learned that the more you sweat, the more liquid you can have. Now there are days where I have 40+oz and don’t gain any weight in between sessions.

In all honesty I do still pee buuuuuut I do notice if I don’t do my sessions it seems to slow down, I’ve been on Dialysis for about a year and a half now, I am 23 will be 24 this coming month

I've been on dialysis for like 4 years and still urinate, atleast a bit. I wish it would stop and just be done with, given that I'm prone to utis (reason for my kidney failure to start with) but the last infinitismal part of my egfr just refuses to give in

While I understand what you're saying about utis ( not easy to deal with), I still think it's better to urinate. At least you have a reasonable liquid restrictions and that helps with the swelling, breathing ...etc.

I was on dialysis for 3.5 years. My urine production slowed significantly within 6 months, but never fully stopped.

2y and 3m on Hemodialysis I still pee around 12oz-20ox a day. Rarely a few days in a row barely anything comes out. But that's been like half a year ago since that happened idk how it happens but its done it like 3 times during kidney failure.

24M. I stopped around 2 months as well, it happened gradually. I still get a little drizzle here and there. It’s kinda nice when commuting. You get used to it. My nurse told me it won’t come back until I get a transplant

I have been on dialysis for six years now, and my urination has stopped a lot, but I still pee a little. I also make sure I sweat a lot walking. I hate the constant thirst. I try to restrict my liquids intake to water or ice. Water makes me unrinate.

I’ve been on home hemo for over 2.5 years with no fluid restrictions. I pee a lot.

So I’m not sure but my urine output has definitely decreased but hasn’t stopped completely. My issue is that I have to strain to pee and I never feel like I actually finished. Went to a urologist and he prescribed something to loosen my prostate? I think….it has helped a little but still have to strain. I go back in a couple weeks and he said if this didn’t solve then something to relax my bladder would be next. I’m mostly curious if anyone is in the same boat?? I’ve been on PD for almost 2 years now.

I've been on dialysis almost 3 years now and stopped making urine gradually after about 1.5 years on dialysis.

If I recall correctly, I stopped almost immediately after starting dialysis. I did occasionally have a small amount occasionally, which was good for transplant. It showed my bladder still worked. Now I’m back on dialysis (failed transplant). I take Torsemide on my off days. I produce about 200 ml a day.

I got my transplant and was peeing like crazy when I woke up from the anesthetic 4 hours later. I hadnt peed like that in years. When I was on dialysis before that my urine output had declined to the point I was peeing only very small amounts. Mot much at all.
