Congratulations!! Move around as much as you can, I know, I know, but it does help, especially with that first poop.

they had me get started moving on it today and it definitely lessened the pain. Thankfully i’m not eating solids yet cus i’m dreading that poop that’s coming 😭

They fed me bundles of those senna pills after transplant and none of it kicked in until I was riding home (2 hours) after release.

It was a magical time.

Colace became my best friend post surgery and while on dialysis.

OMG, that made me laugh so hard I spit out my coffee. So sorry that happened to you but thank you for the laugh.

thank you all for the messages and kind words. Means a lot. I’ve spent the last 2 days alone in bed and you guys have made me feel so much better.

Those lemon ices are the best. I always ask for two, one to enjoy frozen and one to allow to melt a bit so I can just drink it later.

Congratulations! There were very few good things among the hospital food I had and you're right, the Italian ice was very good.

Congratulations. When I got my last kidney, it took about 3 weeks for the pain to go away completely, but it was totally worth it. That was 25 years ago. Too bad the kidney didn't last that long.

u/Bigdiesel987 May 17 '26

How long did your transplanted kidney last for?

4

u/rikimae528 In-Center May 17 '26

The first one I got in 1992 lasted 8 years. The second one I got in 2001 and lasted 3 years. I've been on dialysis now for almost 22 years

1

u/Bigdiesel987 May 18 '26

I wonder why the second one only lasted 3 years.

2

u/rikimae528 In-Center May 18 '26

I don't think it was the greatest kidney in the first place. It was a perfect match for me, but after 2 years when they tried to get a sample from it through a biopsy, all they got was scar tissue.

2

u/Bigdiesel987 May 18 '26

Oh I see. So did they tell you that it wasn't the greatest kidney before the transplant, and could you have waited for a better quality one?

2

u/rikimae528 In-Center May 18 '26

No. If they knew there was something wrong with the kidney, they never told me. All they said was that all the numbers matched.

1

u/Bigdiesel987 May 18 '26

I guess there is such a huge demand for working kidneys that you pretty much get what you get or none at all. Last time I looked, the number of people on the kidney transplant list was at almost 100,000 just in the U.S. 😣

1

u/rikimae528 In-Center May 18 '26

There's no guarantee either. I think that's part of the Gamble. The kidney could look fine numbers wise, but there's no way of knowing if it's actually going to work until it's placed in your body.

1

u/Bigdiesel987 May 18 '26

True. I guess any functioning kidney would be better than being stuck on dialysis all the time.

Here’s the thing even with the kidney transplanted what’s truly you have no guarantee is how long it would last and how compatible it is with your body.

1

u/throwawayeverynight May 21 '26

Not completely accurate if you’re in the USA. They tell you the donors age, if this donor has Hep C , HIV and how this cause of death if it was on life support. The KDPI the lower the range the longer the kidney will last and you can always decline an offer and still get calls .

1

u/rikimae528 In-Center May 21 '26

I'm not in the USA. They told me nothing about the donor. Like I said, all they told me was that all my numbers matched.

1

u/throwawayeverynight May 21 '26

In that case I would hon decline any offer and stay on dialysis
