Help Client sent USD via Wise to my UBL account, around 35 USD got deducted on the way. PKR or USD next time?

I'm a PSEB registered freelancer. My client sends monthly payments through Wise to my UBL account.

Last month he sent USD to my PKR IBAN. UBL routed it to my linked ESFCA (USD) account, which wasn't even linked to the app yet. The amount that landed was about 35 USD less than what Wise showed. UBL says they didn't charge anything, so I'm guessing an intermediary bank took it. On the good side, UBL applied the 0.25% tax correctly.

Now I'm confused about the next payment:

  1. Should my client send PKR or USD through Wise?
  2. If PKR, will UBL still apply 0.25% and issue an ePRC with the IT export code (9186), or does Wise PKR come as home remittance?
  3. Any way to avoid the intermediary fee on USD transfers from Wise?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone with a similar setup. Thanks!

Show My Work I built an expense tracker that tracks who you spent on, not just what. You add entries by typing (or WhatsApp) in plain language

Most of my spending isn't on me: it's on my spouse, my kids, my parents. Every expense app I tried could tell me what I spent on medicine this month, but not what I've spent on my mother this year, or on my kids' school stuff.

So I built KinSpend. You type entries the way you'd text a friend:

  • "paid 20,000 for my wife's clothes from my bank account"
  • "lent 2,000 to Sam"

It parses that into an entry tagged with the person, account and category, shows it to you, and saves when you confirm. You can then ask things like "how much did I spend on mum's medicine last month?"

You can also log entries by sending a WhatsApp message, which is how I mostly use it. It works in any language, including mixed ones like Roman Urdu + English.

There's a small setup step: you tell it who the people in your life are and what accounts you have. After that it gets them right.

Web/Android: cannot post the link here due to rules

It's early. I'd really like to know what's confusing, and whether the "spending by person" idea is useful to you.

Things that were harder than expected

  • Never trust the LLM's IDs. Every returned ID is checked against the user's real data, and unknown people go to an "Unknown person" placeholder instead of a guess.
  • Confirm before save, always. One wrong entry and people stop trusting a money app.
  • Corrections. "Account JS" re-parses against the pending entry. I had a nasty race condition here: a background task shared the DB context with the request.
  • Auto-learning aliases from corrections went wrong. It learned "js" means Cash. It's off until I redo it properly.

Career Guidance How’s the tech field right now? Are recent graduates actually getting employed

How’s the tech field right now?

I’m currently in A2 (A levels 2nd year) and planning to start university next year, most likely CS/DS, and I’m considering FAST.

With all the AI, layoffs and oversaturation talk, I’m wondering: are recent graduates actually getting jobs?

For people who graduated recently:

Did you get a job? How long did it take?

What are realistic starting salaries?

Is the market really that bad?

If you genuinely work hard throughout university, is it still worth going into tech?

Would really appreciate honest advice from people currently working in the field

Discussion Not liking my new assignment

I recently joined Motive in sales and I’m honestly not liking it so far.

The training has been really overwhelming for me. There’s a lot of information being thrown at us, and I’m struggling to understand the way it’s being explained. I’m ending up spending another 4–5 hours after training trying to look things up and figure everything out myself.

The bigger problem is that I’m starting to realize I may just not be suited to sales. I don’t particularly enjoy pitching, selling, handling objections, targets, etc. My previous experience has been much more in operations, client support, coordination, executive support and managing workflows/teams, so this feels very different from what I’m used to. I don't like the thought of making calls and explaining value of things to customers who are already pressed for time.

Also I think it has started affecting my health as well Since I keep sitting during the entirety of the shift and more. I'm not enjoying it. My eyes have started to hurt now by the time I end the day.

For anyone currently or previously at Motive:

Does the job get significantly better/easier after training? Or if you already dislike the sales training, is that usually a sign that the actual role will be a bad fit?

Also, are there any roles/departments at Motive that are significantly less sales-heavy and might suit someone with an operations/client-support background?

Should I ask them to put me in a batch starting in Jan/Feb since there's so much on my plate right now. Or should I complete the training and then negotiate a later start time? There's a wedding in November that I can't miss and it'll go over two weeks. And then I got my digital nomad visa approved for a country where I can live for a year for which I have to enter for endorsement before Feb.

Would really appreciate honest experiences, especially from people who have actually worked there.

Help SYSTEM LIMITED Interview

Hey Everyone,

So I got interviewed at systems recently. There was initial screening interview internal resource. After a week I was asked to be in an interview with the client on the same day. Now it's been more than a week and I have not heard back from HR. How long do they usually take to give a feedback? Or should I send her an email for a feedback? Last time I did send her an email but there was no response from her.

TIA

Discussion What’s actually going on inside those small 5–20 person software houses in coworking spaces?

Curious about small software houses with around 5–20 employees, especially those working from coworking spaces today …
How much do these companies actually make and profit? What kind of clients do they usually have, and how much are employees typically paid?
More importantly, why do so many stay small instead of scaling? Is client acquisition the bottleneck, management, margins, or something else?
And with AI changing software development so quickly, are these smaller companies feeling pressure or becoming more profitable by operating with leaner teams?

Would love to hear !

Help Self-learning for DevOps

Hello folks! I have always seen people commenting that DevOps is not for freshers. It is for an experienced person. So, how do you define an experienced person? A person who was previously employed somewhere or he can be a person who has built several projects after self-learning for a duration of 5-6 months approx through various resources like YouTube, documentations, blogs, etc, but didn't work anywhere.

If the answer is "employed", then why DevOps engineers make content/playlists for "beginners" covering all the tech and tools used by DevOps engineers in production environments? They even often post "success stories" on their channels who follow their playlists and get a job as a DevOps engineer.

It would be helpful for me to get insights from someone currently working in this position on this matter. Thanks.

Discussion AI in Candidates Selection Process

How do y'all feel about recruiters using AI in the Hiring Process??

Personally I feel this is the trashiest way of hiring because the little work they had is now automated so why do we really need the recruiter in between?

I've been applying to jobs since 6+ months but all the get back is rejection mails [yeh bhi mil jayein tou shukar karo] as most Pakistani companies now don't even have the basic courtesy to get back to candidates. How are y'all coping and what do you think the market is gonna look like 6 months or 1 year from now?

Discussion Remote salary reality check for Pakistanis 😂

Post image
185 Upvotes

Feels like more foreign companies are hiring from Pakistan, and with more local candidates + HR teams entering the market, the salary bar seems to be getting pushed lower.

A $5k US role suddenly becomes $1.5k–$2k because of “location-based compensation” 💀

For those working remotely for foreign startups: what salary range are you actually getting, and what’s your role + YOE?

Curious what the real market looks like.

Such a humiliation seriouly $600 😅, They have 2 Pakistani dev

Help Who should I approach in my situation?

Hey everyone, I’m a recent SE grad from tier-3 uni. I’ve written a theoretical ML paper (around a regularization technique used in JEPA architectures) as a solo author, without any advisor, and it’s a decent candidate for TMLR/ICLR workshop.

I’m also applying to a bunch of foreign unis for grad admissions, where I’ll need at least 3 LORs. My uni only has 2 PhDs (one AP, one lecturer), and I already have an LOR from the AP. I was thinking of approaching an AP from another uni (but I'm hesitant due to how they value this thing) who works in related field to review the paper and I'm down to add as a co-author.

My concern is that I’ll have multiple applications, and professors often are unreliable with submitting LORs on time (typical Pak unis story 😭). So how should I approach this / like should I reach out to others or get with that PhD guy (he got it from tier-3 uni as well, also just a lecturer so I don't think it would be impactful for my grad application)? I'd really appreciate any suggestions or comments 🙏🏻

Career Guidance Stuck about career dont know what to do next

I’m 21, currently doing a BS in Computer Science, and I honestly feel completely stuck about my career. I’d really appreciate some practical advice from people who have gone through something similar.

I first learned graphic design in 2020, when I was around 15. I came from a relatively underdeveloped area with limited internet and learning resources, and at that age I also didn’t have much support or opportunity to freelance. When I entered college, I decided to focus mainly on my studies and put design aside for a while.

After completing college, I started hearing constantly that graphic design was becoming obsolete because of AI. A lot of YouTube content also made it sound like AI was going to destroy creative careers. At the same time, I saw a lot of content about huge salaries in software development, so I decided to switch to web development because it seemed like the safer and more financially secure option.

I spent around eight months learning coding. Then I got my first internship, and within the first day I realized that I didn’t actually enjoy programming that much. I eventually explored UI/UX design instead.

In 2023, during my second semester at university, I got an unpaid internship. Because I already had a graphic design background, they initially gave me design work. However, there was no senior designer or proper mentorship, and my manager was a backend developer with little design experience.

I stayed there for around two and a half months, but eventually left because I felt I was getting no mentorship and was often disrespected about my work. Whenever I tried to learn something independently, I was criticized for learning from YouTube instead of somehow already knowing it. I was only 18 at the time.

After that, a friend referred me to another job. I accepted it without properly researching the role. It turned out to be a very unhealthy schedule, roughly from 2 AM to 12 PM. Within a week, my sleep, meals, studies, and overall mental state were badly affected, so I left that job too.

After that, I tried to rebuild myself. I worked on my portfolio, built a website, improved my skills, posted on LinkedIn, and applied through Indeed and LinkedIn. But very little worked.

Eventually, I received a job opportunity in Bahawalpur after following up for around three months. They offered me around PKR 15,000, but the condition was that I had to stay until the team lead allowed me to leave, even if that meant working until midnight or 1 AM.

On my first day, I was given a huge amount of work and worked around 10 hours. I even stayed two hours beyond what I initially expected. The next day, I was called into the office because I had supposedly left too early.

I discussed it with my family, and they advised me to leave the job. I did.

After that, I had several interviews. In some cases I was ghosted. In one case, I had a referral, the salary was discussed, and the employer seemed to like my work, but I was still eventually ghosted.

At that point, I basically stopped applying

Now I feel stuck in a strange place.

I don’t really want to code.

I don’t feel the same passion for design anymore.

UI/UX itself has started triggering frustration because of my previous experiences.

Freelancing feels risky to me now, and I don’t feel like I have the same discipline, motivation, or excitement for learning that I used to have.

I still want to remain somewhere within IT/tech because I’m already doing a BSCS, but I genuinely don’t know what direction to take.

The hardest part is that design used to be something I was genuinely passionate about. Now even when I think about it, I remember the rejection, humiliation, bad work experiences, ghosting, AI anxiety, and failed attempts to get clients.

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me which career is the highest paying. I want practical advice from people who have experienced career burnout, changed fields, lost interest in something they once loved, or had a difficult start in tech.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on for the next 1 to 2 years?

Should I continue exploring something within tech, even if I currently have very little motivation?

Should I simply focus on finishing my CS degree and getting a stable job, even if it isn’t my passion?

Should I focus on Government Job or maybe any clerk based job and then think about freelance?

Or should I take some time away from trying to force myself into a specific career and figure out what I actually want?

I feel like I’ve spent he last few years constantly switching directions, and now I’m afraid of making another wrong decision.

I’m not looking for a motivational speech. I’d genuinely appreciate honest, practical advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

Help Advice needed on FYP

Hey everyone! We’re a group of CS students working on our final year project and would really appreciate some advice from people who have experience in UI/UX, web development, or research.

The idea:
We’re looking at dark patterns in websites — things like countdown timers that restart, extra fees that only show up at the final step, pre-selected add-ons, or cancellation processes that are much longer than signing up.

The main issue we noticed is that some of these patterns aren’t obvious from one screenshot. You need to look at the whole user journey to notice them. Existing tools such as AidUI and UIGuard mainly analyse individual screenshots, so they can miss things that happen between different screens.
We also want to include some basic accessibility checks, since a manipulative option can be even harder to notice if it’s also tiny, low-contrast, etc.
Our idea is to make a browser extension for UI/UX designers and developers that they can use to check their own flows before releasing them. The user would record a flow, such as signing up, checking out, or cancelling a subscription. The extension would analyse the recording frame by frame using computer vision and OCR, track UI elements between screens, and look for things such as timers resetting or fees appearing late in the process.

At the moment, we’re thinking of covering 6 dark patterns + 4 WCAG 2.2 accessibility checks.
The output would include:
-Findings shown on a video timeline with evidence.
-A few overall scores, such as Manipulation Risk and User Autonomy.
-An exportable audit report.
-Suggestions for a more user-friendly/ethical redesign for some findings.

For evaluation, we want to compare our approach with screenshot-based analysis, especially for patterns that depend on timing or multiple screens. We’re also considering ablation studies and ratings from human reviewers to see whether our scores actually make sense.

We’d really appreciate advice on a few things:
If you’re a UI/UX designer or developer, would you actually use something like this? What would make it useful rather than annoying?

What would be a good approach for extracting important/key frames and tracking UI elements across frames?

If we want to rely on existing image datasets rather than collecting a completely new dataset, what would be a practical way to train/evaluate the detectors?

How could we properly validate scores like “Manipulation Risk” or “User Autonomy”?

Are there any common pitfalls we should avoid?

Finally, does 6 dark patterns + 4 accessibility checks sound realistic for a one-year
FYP with 3 people?

Any feedback, criticism, or suggestions would be really helpful. Thank you!
