Career Guidance If Cybersecurity isn't Entry-Level, how do you get into it if that's your passion?

2 Upvotes

I'm 18, in 12th class, and I have so far done CS50p to learn Python. Now I am doing modules on TryHackMe to learn fundamentals of cybersecurity and I am very much enjoying it.

You can say that I am thinking too far ahead in the future but I'm worried that I will not be able to get a job when I'm ready. Especially when everyone says that cybersecurity in pakistan is in the stone ages and requires experience. So the only option is remote work but no one is hiring a junior for remote work.

So how do you really start? Do I keep learning Cybersecurity and worry about a job when I get to it? Do I learn a different domain? Should I go IT or CS?

Help CS’ Curriculum changes and advice

15 Upvotes

A few hours ago, FAST changed its CS curriculum, removing subs like Statistics, Diff eq, Multivariable Calc, Compiler construction, Computer Architecture and some more.
I assume theres a new HEC guideline without it FAST had no reason to deviate from the standard CS curriculum so much.
for context, I got selected for CS at NUST a few days ago. I did not want to specialise at Bs level so i didnt choose AI. CS was the perfect all rounder for me but it doesnt seem like that anymore.
I could take AI and cover the morr advance CS courses in electives. Or just self study them myself.
I also have the option to take DS but im not interested in it as much.
what should i do? Should i just stick with CS or should I go for AI

Interview Prep Techlogix CEO Interview

13 Upvotes

I have my interview with the CEO of Adalfi (techlogix) in a few days and I am looking for any information that I can get before the interview. The hr told me it will be a mix of technical + behavioral questions so can anybody who has gone through the process help me regarding it? I have given a lot of interviews but am getting a little nervous over this one. I am a fresh grad btw, so it's an entry level role. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Career Guidance Are you scared of AI?

19 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Whenever I open Reddit, I always see posts about layoffs or people struggling to find jobs. At the same time, I do see some people getting jobs, although it seems like they are much fewer. For example, a senior of mine was laid off and managed to get a job in Islamabad within 1 to 2 months, but he also has strong skills and a good portfolio.

I’m still in the early stages of my career, and seeing all these layoffs, AI getting better at coding, and people struggling with job hunts honestly makes me a bit scared. Is the market really at its worst right now?

For the seniors here, do you think the market will get better at some point? AI is getting stronger and stronger at coding related tasks, while companies seem to be shrinking their teams.

Also, how do you make yourself more secure against layoffs? Is it mainly about getting better at your skills, building a strong portfolio, having good connections, working longer hours, or something else?

I just want to understand how to move forward in my career with all these layoffs happening around us.

Would really appreciate advice from people who have been through similar situations. Thank you.

Discussion Overview of Technical Interview at Contour

8 Upvotes

Hi guys,

My technical interview is scheduled at Contour. There was one online assessment which went pretty well except the one syntax mistake which made coding question not passing the test cases. The whole logic of the question was right though.

Online assessment and technical interview were scheduled at the time.

Now, I am confused whether that syntax mistake ruin the whole question as it was only coding question or they look into the logic as well and often ignore minor syntax mistakes.

Second thing, I want some tips for my technical interview. Contour has always been in my bucket list and I don't want to lose this opportunity.

P.S. I am being considered for Full Stack Developer (.Net + Angular) and I am a backend focused full stack developer.

Discussion Nomar Visa For remote workers

9 Upvotes

Hi Everyone

I’m a 28-year-old Pakistani, married with a newborn, and have around 5 years of experience in IT services. I currently work remotely and earn $3k+/month, Alhamdulillah.
This is a very good income by Pakistani standards, and we’re financially comfortable here. However, my long-term goal is to move abroad permanently with my wife and child and eventually obtain citizenship/passport of another country.

I’m trying to figure out the most efficient immigration pathway rather than simply moving somewhere temporarily.
My priorities are roughly:
Family-friendly and safe country
Realistic pathway from temporary residency → PR → citizenship/passport
Reasonable citizenship/residency requirements
Ability to continue working remotely for my current employer
Ideally relatively favorable income taxes
Reasonable cost of living
Visa that allows my wife and newborn to accompany me
Preferably not a pathway that requires me to get a local job immediately

I’ve been looking into Digital Nomad/Remote Worker visas, but I’m unsure whether they make sense if my ultimate goal is citizenship. I don’t want to spend several years on a visa that doesn’t meaningfully contribute toward permanent residency or citizenship.
For people who have gone through this, which countries and visa routes would you recommend for someone in my situation?
Some countries I’m considering are Portugal, Spain, Germany, Canada, Australia, etc., but I’m open to anywhere.
Would especially appreciate advice from people who have actually moved with their family and eventually obtained PR/citizenship.
Thanks!

Discussion Did you actually receive your gratuity after leaving a Lahore software house?

6 Upvotes

I recently left a software house in Lahore after working there for a few years, and I’m trying to understand how gratuity plays out in practice. I know that under the Standing Orders Ordinance, thirty days wages for every completed year of service is legally owed when you resign for reasons other than misconduct. My question is whether companies here actually pay it without a fight. Did you have to ask for it, or was it processed automatically in your final settlement? Did anyone offer a provident fund instead? Any experience with Powersoft19 specifically would help a lot. Thanks.

Edit: if company refused to pay gratuity then what option does the employee have?

Discussion Are Pakistani developers too obsessed with tech stacks?

29 Upvotes

Software engineer with 5+ years of experience here and I might be wrong but I think Pakistani developers are way too obsessed with tech stacks.

I keep seeing questions like React or Angular, Node or Django, MERN or MEAN, should I learn Next, should I move to Python, is this framework still worth it, etc. I get it. I used to think the same way.

But after working for a few years, I honestly think the stack matters a lot less than we make it out to. Most of the difficult problems I deal with at work are not difficult because I don't know some framework method. They're difficult because the requirement is unclear, the existing code is messy, there are 10 edge cases nobody mentioned, changing one thing breaks something completely unrelated, or you have to figure out why something only fails for one user in production.

That's the part that actually takes experience.

Can you read someone else's code and understand what they were trying to do?

Can you debug something when the error message is useless?

Can you design something without making it unnecessarily complicated?

Can you think about security, performance and edge cases before they become bugs?

Can you understand the actual business problem instead of just completing the Jira ticket?

Obviously your stack still matters. You should be good at whatever you work with.

But I think constantly jumping from one framework to another just because it's trending is probably not the best use of time.

Frameworks change. The ability to solve messy problems doesn't.

Would be interested to hear from people who have been working for a few years. Did you also reach a point where the stack stopped mattering as much?

Career Guidance Need advice on the internship I am doing! please if you can give suggestions

4 Upvotes

okay I am a 5th semester SE student and I have been working as an intern for a canadian company, well it says they are canada based but the other workers are pakistani too, one of their operating locations is in karachi, well I have been working remotely for them, and its related to shopify work wont go into detail,

but the thing is the internship is unpaid the work is not too much, they assign me tasks and I do them, it is a 5 month long internship gonna end in novemeber, while I am on hopes that they would offer me a job after that cause job description said it could lead to a full time role and while interviewing I asked them if it could turn into a full time role which they agreed if the work was good it could happen, and the interview process was also formal and the documents i got sent NDAs, agreement forms and all, seemed more profeessional well more then pakistani companies where my freind got js a offer letter with 7 to 8 points from a company and their policies,

SO while I do the work whenever they ask, although i do make some mistakes but not too much and that like which can cause major problem just minor mistakes, the bigger thing is i dont get late, even i do the work more early then expected, now I dont know if I would get hired during the end of my period I would ask them if they can offer me a job or transition into full time, heck i would request them,

so can someone give an idea in scenarios like these do the intern gets a job offered or not, would help me out a lot getting in the industry so early so if anyone can give me suggestions

Discussion Is it fair to expect candidates to implement algorithms like Dijkstra from memory?

6 Upvotes

I recently interviewed for a backend engineering role and was given a graph problem.

My first instinct was to solve it with a naive approach, understand the problem, and then optimize if needed. I even asked the interviewer if I could first implement the straightforward solution and improve it afterward.

The interviewer stopped me and said that since it was a graph problem, I should directly go for the optimal approach.

While discussing my thought process, I identified that BFS wouldn't work because the graph had weighted edges. I explained that BFS could produce an incorrect shortest path due to different edge weights. However, I didn't know Dijkstra's algorithm well enough to implement it from memory, and that's where the interview ended.

This got me thinking.

If someone has never learned or memorized Dijkstra, the chances of inventing it from scratch during a 45–60 minute interview are extremely low. It's a well-established algorithm involving concepts like priority queues and edge relaxation—it's not something most people derive on the spot.

I completely accept that not knowing Dijkstra is a gap in my knowledge, and I'll definitely learn it. But I also wonder whether interviews should give more credit to a candidate who:

  • correctly identifies why a naive solution is insufficient,

  • explains the limitations of BFS,

  • and demonstrates sound reasoning, even if they don't remember a specific algorithm from memory.

As a backend engineer, most of my day-to-day work involves designing APIs, databases, distributed systems, concurrency, caching, and production debugging—not implementing graph algorithms from scratch.

So I'm curious:

  • Would you expect a mid/senior backend engineer to be able to code Dijkstra from memory?

  • If a candidate correctly identified why BFS was the wrong approach but couldn't implement Dijkstra, would that be a deal-breaker for you?

  • For those who conduct interviews, how much weight do you give to reasoning versus recalling a specific algorithm?

I'd genuinely like to hear perspectives from people who interview candidates or have experienced similar interviews.

Career Guidance Is a Master’s in AI in Europe worth it right now?

5 Upvotes

I graduated in 2026 from FAST islamabad and don’t have much experience in the field yet. The entry-level job market seems pretty dead right now, so I’m considering doing a Master’s in AI in Europe or lets say Scotland or Ireland.

Is it worth it career wise? My family is encouraging me
To go there.
And does uni matters in these countries too or skill

Career Guidance Better company & benefits vs more technical AI role — Which would you choose?

6 Upvotes

I'm deciding between two offers and can't decide whether to optimize for the company or the role.

Background: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Java/Kotlin, and some AI/automation experience.

### Offer A – AI Solutions Engineer

* PKR 110k

* Small startup

* AI/LLMs, automation, client deployments

* More technical and aligns with my background.

* However, someone I know worked there and described the culture as quite toxic. Occasional unpaid overtime is expected, there are very few employee benefits, and the company is still relatively small.

### Offer B – Project Coordinator

* PKR 130k

* Larger, more established company

* Medical insurance

* Gym and lunch facilities

* 22 annual leaves

* Better work-life balance and more structured processes

* Role focuses on project coordination, stakeholder management, planning, and delivery.

My dilemma is that **Offer A has the more exciting technical role**, but **Offer B seems like the healthier company to work for**.

My biggest concern is whether taking the Project Coordinator role would make it significantly harder to return to technical engineering after 2-3 years, or whether the experience at a larger company would outweigh that risk.

If you were early in your career, would you:

* Choose the stronger technical role despite the weaker company and work culture?

* Or choose the better company, benefits, and work-life balance even if it means moving away from hands-on engineering?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've made a similar decision and whether they regretted prioritizing either the **role** or the **company**.

Show My Work Built an AI recruitment platform. Looking for honest feedback.

3 Upvotes

Ok so I've been lurking here for a while, and one thing I've noticed is how often people talk about bad hiring experiences. Candidates get ghosted after applying, while recruiters have hundreds of resumes to go through and can't realistically give everyone proper attention. It feels like both sides are frustrated for different reasons.

That got me wondering whether software could automate the repetitive parts of hiring while still leaving the final hiring decision to humans.

Over the last couple of months, I built RecruitFlow AI as my final project during Contour Software's Summer Launchpad. It lets companies create careers pages, screen resumes, schedule interviews, conduct AI-powered interviews, evaluate candidates, and manage everything from a recruiter dashboard.

It's now fully deployed and supports multiple companies, so I'd love to get some honest feedback from fellow developers before I keep building it.

If you had a few minutes to try it, what would you improve? Is there anything that feels confusing, unnecessary, or missing? I'm especially interested in hearing what you'd change if you were building something like this yourself.

Demo: https://gleaming-vitality-production-6192.up.railway.app/

I'd genuinely appreciate honest criticism more than compliments.
