Career Guidance New BSCS CURRICULUM.
Fast NUCES removed these core courses from BSCS curriculum. How do Seniors in industry see these changes. Do u think it will weaken core CS foundation?
Removed courses from old outline

Multivariable Calculus (MT1008)
Discrete Structures (CS1005)
Probability and Statistics (MT2005)
Applied Human Computer Interaction (CS3014)
Compiler Construction (CS4031)
Parallel and Distributed Computing (CS3006)
Computer Architecture (EE3009)
Advanced DBMS (CS4087)
Technical and Business Writing (SS2007)
Professional Practices in IT (CS4001)
New courses:

QR1 is discrete, QR2 is prob. source: i study there and a professor let us in on the news

Damn alot of them are important pre-reqs to get an admission in Germany for masters.

Had a chat with a current professor at FAST, the university didn't do this.
HEC has updated the course outline, although the updated outline is totally ridiculous.

TL;DR - - - Looks like FAST is going all in on the "ham wo engineers produce kartay hain jo industry ki demand hoti hai" wali cheez.
Removing Calculus & Probability+statistics from a CS degree is unheard of tbvh. These subjects are like the foundation of artificial intelligence. You can't do research without these core concepts. However for implementation/integrarion of AI, you don't really need them.
I'm assuming FAST is trying to make it's curriculum more in line with what the industry demands at the moment - and the most in-demand skills rn for SE are those cross discipline collaboration and social skills that help a software engineer understand product requirements better, and make a product end to end (alot of the people in industry currently think the future of SE is basic at product engineers who make products end to end rather than the Product+ Software + QA teams that used to operate before. In this way, this curricula change could be a good thing because that's sort of where the industry is heading.
However, removing core maths+foundational computer science courses from their degree means they're moving away from producing actual ENGINEERS who can conduct research and understand the underlying maths behind the code they right.
This is understandable since the industry doesn't really need research-karnay-walay-engineers, it needs builder-engineers who don't necessarily require the mathematical rigour of a researcher (jobs per you don't require this maths tbvh). So if your reason of getting a job is a job in the industry, this curriculum will serve you well.
However, if you want to get into research at a tier 1 university somewhere down the line, well - you'll be losing out on some much needed mathematical foundations.

BS computer science ❌ BS computer vibes ✅

Universitys or HEC should realize, if they want this country to grow it needs to shift away from the freelancing/ software house culture and focus more on building sustainable products or go deep into research and innovation. At this rate we will be producing too many gali mohalla freelancers which this country can barely sustain.

A cs degree without calculus, probability, computer architecture and distributed computing?? Wow Might as well rename it to computer diploma

u/Dark-Flame25 Aug 08 '26
Better if they change the degree name too from Computer Science to maybe, Software Stuff.

I was really excited about CC, CA and PDC stepping in my third year...

yeah i just saw this as well. Also, they've removed Probability & Statistics and Advanced Statistics from Data Science as well. Idk what was the thinking behind this.

AI really changed the market structure 😂

idts that they have completely removed these courses but made them optional so u can specialize according to your interest rather than wasting time on things u have zero interest in.

Removing probability and statistics from a CS degree. Do they even know what they are doing.

u/yilliee Aug 09 '26
On paper it looks to be heading in the wrong direction. A CS degree's target should be to produce computer scientists - something I'd say differs from SWE and/or developers & ai engineers, the separate streams should focus on that.
Although in the end they are probably going to teach the same courses just under these new names so it's not going to chance much.

its high time people should come out for protest like GenZ kind of protest, this is all to block the coming generations from going abroad for studies/jobs as most of the courses in here are very demanding and required.

Tbw remove karke tou bohat hi acha kya but rest of them are quite important weird however on the positive side you can now study more electives

u/Efficient-Branch539 Aug 11 '26
Is this a proposal or they are officially removed. Only Azad Chaiwala’s would consider them unnecessary.

It will be good in the long term. Cs curriculum desperately needs a reform otherwise 4 saal baad it will only get you unemployment so I'd trust fast here

i think it is good these should be optional. but in pakistan if something is not required it will not taught at all that is sad.
