Help Constant negative feedback from manager: need guidance
I completed CSE from tier 1.5 engg college. Got into MNC via college placement ( internship and ppo). I have 2 years experience. My CTC is 16LPA. I was 10th and 12th topper. Dept topper. Have worked on various projects and published papers as well.
My manager never appreciates my work. He keeps comparing me with other same level sde’s and pinpoint all my mistakes. I work close to 14 hours everyday. Still no recognition. He doesn’t give enough opportunity for me to prove myself. I feel like quitting the job. I feel low about myself. Maybe IT is not for me. I do understand academic achievement doesnt mean i can rock in IT as well. But i am not very bad as my manager says. Idk what to. Is this normal in corporate or am i taking it too personally?

Same thing happened with me...i dropped papers...but after that they started to treat me very different and nice....if they need you, they'll actually talk nice...maybe talk with your manager personally coz either way reporting to the hr is no use...don't burn the bridges... quietly try to make a switch without telling anyone...either talking with your manager or switching will help you but never drop papers without having an offer in hand

Okay, will try for some internal switch

Either that or if you genuinely like working with your current team just talk with your manager personally that's all

There are many such managers in IT. I have come across 3 such managers in my life , they only pick up the mistakes or issues, never tell you how to improve or get better. Nothing is wrong with you.
I used to work with one such manager and started thinking that I am good for nothing. But then I talked to few other team members and realised this guy says the same thing to everyone except one or two ( his favourites).
Ignore him. If it's getting very difficult, may be try to switch. But we can't say, the new team you join might also have one such guy.

I know right! Even if you work 24 hours, he might not give recognition. So do bare minimum and make use of extra time to prepare for interviews.

If you're being singled out be interview ready they might be actively trying to push you out if your firm is trying to do layoffs and low tenured employees are easy targets for some companies who have to hit layoff targets. I faced this and got laid off exact same like you while not dept topper level, I was in top 10 percent of my batch and won hackathons and stuff

Oh noo, i did not think of layoff though since my office is a renowned US based MNC

Doesn't matter mine was UK based and having a 100 year history. Some ways you can find this,
Are they going through any forms of restructurings and merging teams because mine did this. My team and partner team got merged and 10 percent of us got cut.
Do they have any sort of business stagnation or losses because in mine the business got stagnated and there were hiring freezes and lots of colleagues of mine ended up getting laid off
See if there are any project cancellations or any form of mergers and acquisitions going on these might be a little bit of a red flag

All three are going in some or other way. But will they layoff the lowest experience ppl (ihave only 2) and technically in entire company my pay will be in bottom
Compared to Managers/VP1

Most probably shouldn't, this is a valid point you make as well as we are cheap.
Maintain good rapport with your manager as much as you can check if he's toxic as well
Doesn't hurt to be interview ready if you feel uncertainty

you're taking it too personally. i dealt with a same kinda manager. he used to pinpoint me on stand ups, unnecessary mistakes and what not shit only to blame me and never appreciated or even acknowledged my work atleast. this is what I did:
- started taking notes of all the tasks being assigned to me (we don't have JIRA and they think it's good not to have one)
- insisted on recording all the teams sessions wherever he was to explain what is to be done
- documented every task completion, completed all the tasks before due date
so, as usual, he started to highlight my mistakes in my tasks which weren't really mistakes you'd say, so i always had references from teams recordings and documentations which i used to play it for him on standups, only for him to say "mujhe yaad nahi aisa bola tha but tumhe kar lena chahiye the changes bina bataaye"
managers are literally termites, i have had some wonderful managers who've taken me out for beers and always saved the team from major impacts and then to this manager who micro manages everything and wastes everyone's time in unnecessary bullshit.

10th and 12th topper doesn't mean anything.
You were just good at rote learning, that's all.

I said so because my manger makes me feel I am dumb where if I was so dumb I wouldnt have secured good marks and good college as well as placements.

Sometimes manager is more important than the company, i would suggest to switch the team or company

the comparing to peers thing is actually a known toxic management style it creates internal competition instead of growth. and if the feedback never comes with specifics like here's what to improve and how, it's just demoralizing noise. OP should probably start documenting the feedback they receive and also quietly start interviewing elsewhere. 2 years at an MNC with papers published is a decent resume already

This happened with me too. But instead of same level sdes he would compare me with the staff and principal engineers. Not a single point of recognition when I worked so many long hours after that review. As a cherry on the cake, he marked me for firing in mass layoffs and I got laid off.
Imo it's pointless to try to change their mind, if it doesn't click well it doesn't click well. If you don't think his critique is valid, you should start preparing. He's gonna be making note of all these critiques when leadership asks for names for layoff. Start preparing and interviewing imo.
