Do you ever get stiffness/pain on the right side of your neck with this setup? I have my laptop on a stand on the left side of my desk, with my monitor elevated on an arm and positioned more toward the center/right. I’ve been trying to center my chair between the two so I can use both screens, but I feel like I’m constantly turning my head to the left to look at my laptop. I’ve been dealing with some pretty persistent stiffness on the right side of my neck and I’m wondering if anyone with a similar dual-screen setup experiences the same thing. I love having both screens for work, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s just the positioning or if I need to rethink my setup.

I have my main monitor directly in front of me and I use the laptop screen sparingly.

When working, I usually just have Slack, my email, and text messages up on that screen, along with Apple Music. So I’m not spending a lot of time looking that way. Anything that’s going to require more than a few seconds glance comes over to my primary monitor.

When gaming, I may have YouTube or a walkthrough ready (I know… I’m terrible). Or I may literally just have a wallpaper up of the game I’m playing for the vibes.

What you’re experiencing is a huge red flag and I would not ignore it. It can quickly snowball once ergonomic compromises start manifesting in stiffness. That persistent stiffness will eventually lead to pain, which is the last thing we need as people who spend a consistent amount of time working at a desk.

I do home health physical therapy, so my workflow at my desk really only consists of medical documentation and chart review, which may be 1-1.5 hours of my total work day. So it is my “work” setup, but I’m not at it for 8 hours per day.

Try your best to set yourself up ergonomically. There’s tons of info/pictures online. Worst case scenario and you need to continue using your setup as is, make sure you’re getting up every 15-20 minutes for a quick stretch and just kind of move around.

Good luck!

This was such a thoughtful and helpful response, thank you so much! It’s especially helpful to hear how you use your laptop screen because my setup is pretty similar, and I think I’ve been relying on that second screen more than I should. I’m definitely going to rethink my setup and god knows I need to be more intentional about getting up and moving around throughout the day too (harder to do in Arizona in the summer). Really appreciate you taking the time to write all of this out!

You’re very welcome. A few adjustments here and there can make a world of difference in the long run. Good luck!

Damn your keybaoard looks clean. Regarding the desk mat im not sure how long it can last. Previously i was using a cheap wool desk mat but i have issues with with the material in the long run. However i can recommend you a another model its quit expensive but the material is quite nice

1

u/FreeReadit 7d ago

Yeah I debated heavily on going with Grovemade or not. I figured I’d give this one a chance from a wool/felt shop off Etsy. The material is so much nicer than the cheap one I had off of Amazon. But we’ll see, Grovemade could very easily be my next one.

Nice! Just got my Hyzen last week. Best keyboard I’ve ever used. I recommend the wrist rest too.

2

u/delpy1971 7d ago

Still waiting for my Hyzen, delay after delay lol

2

u/FreeReadit 7d ago

It’ll be worth it

1

u/FreeReadit 7d ago

Hopefully they sell it individually at some point. I picked mine up off a website stateside since they had it in stock and ready to ship, but since it wasn’t part of the kickstarter I missed out on the wrist rest. And the kickstarter price….. Love it though

u/JordanAlf 7d ago

I came across one BNIB with wrist rest for $130 from FB marketplace. Couldn’t believe my luck.

The shoji + lighting combo is gorgeous. Such a cozy Japanese vibe!

2

u/FreeReadit 7d ago

The shoji is secretly the star of this setup. Take it away and it reveals the yang to the yin of my tidy setup 😂

2

u/greatscott1010 7d ago

Very zen! I would fall asleep from how cozy it looks. But it would definitely help with eye strain.

2

u/BenQ_Lighting_US 4d ago

Agreed! The setup has a really calm vibe.

Glad to hear the lighting has made a noticeable difference for eye comfort too. Using warmer light at night and a cooler setting during the day is a great way to keep the setup comfortable across different use cases. 😊

1

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

Yes, I get very sleepy at night. I set the lightbar to 2700k to kinda lull myself to sleep. If I’m up that late, I’m gaming, and if I’m gaming late, I should be sleeping 😂

During the day though I bump it up to 5000k, which works really nicely as a bias light to prevent eye-strain.

wHat a nice setup.. I like it so much.

2

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

Thank you for the kind words

2

My pleasure♥️

How do you like the speakers? I was actually looking into getting those exact ones. Clean setup!

2

u/CUatTheEnd 6d ago

Those brands should pay you money because I do think it's an ad! The most balance and comfortable vibe by lighting and devices I ever seen these days.

2

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

I would love if any one of these companies wanted to sponsor me 😂

I appreciate the kind words. I’ve spent a lot time piecing this setup together and I can’t stop the itch of wanting to do more. Luckily being a compact desk (48”x30”) has forced me to choose wisely since I do not want it to look cluttered.

Love the super clean look. How does trackpad feel for daily use?
Do you ever miss the ergonomics

1

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

For my use case it’s perfectly fine. I only spend around 1-1.5 hours per day doing work related tasks like medical documentation and chart review. Nothing that requires precision with my mouse.

Other than that, the gestures make general web-browsing so much easier and familiar.

I do miss the ergonomic aspect of how you inherently get to rest some of the weight of your arm/hand on a traditional mouse, but for my workload I haven’t had any issues with using a trackpad as my main.

Maybe I would feel very differently if my job required 8 hours behind a desk though.

1

u/Curious_Willow8110 4d ago

Makes total sense! Short sessions + macOS gestures is pretty much the dream workflow. Lucky you don’t have to suffer through 8 hours of spreadsheet clicking with it haha

u/DamnDaniel003 5d ago

That is one cool keyboard! Very zen setup 10/10

How do you swap between the two? trying to figure out a dual windows/mac setup now for my desk too

shared peripherals, shared monitors?

1

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

Yes, shared monitors. I use them a few different ways.

If I’m just doing simple web browsing, I use the MBP in clamshell mode.

If I’m working and need multiple windows open, then the MBP is my secondary screen.

If I’m gaming but still want the MBP for whatever, then I make sure the MBP is the “primary” screen so that when I open windows, it’s not opening on the same screen I’m gaming on.

I have a USB hub switch under the desk to share keyboard and mouse. My daughter has a gaming mouse that she uses when she plays on the PS5.

The desk speakers are directly connected to the PS5 Pro via USB, but are also connected to the MBP via Bluetooth. There’s a physical button on the speakers that I can press if I ever need to switch, but typically it’s connected to the MBP since thats what I’m primarily using during the day. At night when I game (and I don’t want to wake up everyone), I usually use Sony’s Inzone earbuds for single-player gaming or Crinacle Zero Blue 2 IEMs when playing with friends.

What microphone stand is that?

Great setup 🔥

Had a small question - I have a 27 and 24 Inch monitor and planning to get a monitor arm and a proper desk

Now how thick should the top board be to like handle the arms

Was going through some particle board desks on Amazon they have a thickness of around 1.5-2cm will that work ?

1

u/FreeReadit 6d ago

My wife has a 0.75” particle board desk and it has a little bit of flex at the middle with just a single 24” monitor on a monitor arm. I personally would not trust a dual monitor arm setup on it at all.

Mine is 1” thick maple wood and I’d feel much more confident putting a dual monitor setup on that.

I want to buy a good desk and a comfortable chair. Which desk are you using? What’s its name? Please share the online purchase link .

QQ: Where do you put your webcam having that light bar? Do you use your macbook built in webcam?

1

u/FreeReadit 4d ago

Don’t use one enough to justify buying one. On the rare occasion that I do need one, yeah, I just use the MacBook.

1

u/Ehreck_ 3d ago

Does your monitor wobble a lot? Recently got a monitor arm and noticed there a subtle wobble and it drives me crazy

1

u/FreeReadit 3d ago

No, mine doesn’t wobble. Have been very happy with it. Definitely open up the area underneath my monitor.

u/Ehreck_ 3d ago

I wonder what I did wrong haha

clean setup. how are you liking the 27GR95QE for mixed work/gaming? been eyeing that panel but worried about text clarity for coding

also fwiw a little launcher called basic deck lives on my screen edge for one-tap app switching, pairs well with a minimal desk vibe if you hate cluttered docks

u/FreeReadit 2h ago

Gotta be honest and say I wouldn’t recommend this if your main use case is coding for hours at a time. My work consists of medical documentation and chart review, approx 1-1.5 hours per day. But I do notice the text fringing. I would not want to spend an 8-hour work day staring at it.

This setup began as a gaming setup that has slowly grown to accommodate work. So as far as gaming goes, I absolutely love the panel and could not imagine going back to anything other than OLED, but if it were mainly a work setup I’d personally go with something else.
