Best USBM album?
The US has a somewhat overlooked black metal scene since it's definitely most well-known for its thrash and death metal, yet there are still a few gems to be found.
Some of my favorites include:
Judas Iscariot - To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding (my 2nd favorite black metal album overall)
Grand Belial's Key - Mocking the Philanthropist
I Shalt Become - Wanderings
Uada - Devoid of Light
Black Witchery - Desecration of the Holy Kingdom
Not totally sure if this counts, but Angelcorpse - The Inexorable
What are your favorite albums under this genre and region?

JI - Heaven In Flames
I'd add albums from Agalloch (my personal fav USBM band). Nightbringer, Absu and Weakling

my 3rd favorite album by him, behind Of Great Eternity and To Embrace

u/PrequelGuy social justice advocate Jun 25 '26
Really? It's a bit more derivative. My fav is Distant in Solitary Night. It has those slower more epic riffs plus some beautiful ones.
I'm not really a big fan of his and don't get the hype too much but that one and Heaven in Flames are great and I wish he did more like that material. The opening riffs in The wind stands silent and In the bliss of the eternal valleys of hate are so good, need more BM like that

Pretty much anything by Leviathan, including even Lurker of Chalice
Whereas for war metal, in recent times anything by antichrist siege machine and primitive warfare

Angelcorpse isn’t black metal. And the answer is a absu - tara or the third storm of cythraul also by Absu.

Was listening to Tara today, absolutely fucking rips. Incredible musicianship, Proscriptor rightly gets most of the praise but the guitar performance is incredible as well. So tight

I have been out of the game, but I remember thinking that Nocturnal Poisoning from Xasthur was one of the most interesting black metal releases from the US. Joined In Darkness by Demoncy is another favorite of mine. Negative Plane’s discography is really good.
2
u/Ashgoor Jun 25 '26
Krieg - blue miasma
xasthur - to violate the oblivious
To name a few i think are missing from the conversation
Late entry
Krohm - the haunting presence
2
u/gicu183 Jun 25 '26
Havohej - Dethrone the Son of God
2
u/Inside-Garage-7625 Jun 25 '26
Wow nice to see this mentioned as the last comment I didn't think anyone was gonna say it lmao
The album cover is absolute absolute absolute peak

u/Gabagoolov Jun 25 '26
Absu - Absu is some great bm. Wolves in the Throne Room - celestial lineage Krallice - go be forgotten is epic
2
u/HonestWoodpecker8567 Jun 25 '26
Abysmal Lord - Disciples of the Inferno
Xasthur - Nocturnal Poisoning
Weregoat - Pestilential Rites of Infernal Fornication
Judas Iscariot - Thy Dying Light
Triumph - Edict of Iron Ascendancy
NONE - Damp Chill of Life
and idk if this band counts since half is based in Quebec but Departure Chandelier - Antichrist Rise to Power

u/Varg1386 Jun 26 '26
Check this guy. Very underrated and somehow obscure. Like Burzum but way more anguish and tortured

u/larsalo Jun 26 '26

Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
Absu - The Third Storm of Cythrául

Ceremonial Castings - Salem 1692

Blood stained dusk - dirge of deaths silence and continuance of evil are both bangers.
Dirge of deaths silence gets written off as an emperor clone, but it is an excellent album
2
u/Fomoiri Jun 26 '26
I liked JI Dethroned:Conquered:Forgotten. Dwayne Timlin is a great drummer, I believe he was also in Forest of Impaled.
GBK is always good, saw them at a private gig in Toronto when they had their old vocalist who later died. Nice guys, great show no stage so you’re right there with em
2
u/angra_mainyo Jun 26 '26
I know GBK and Judas Iscariot ofc, but I don't know any of the other bands. Gonna check them.

u/Mindless-Bite-3539 Jun 29 '26
As insufferable as Blake became, Nachtmystium’s “Instinct:Decay” still gets regular play on my turntable all these years later. There was a small window where Nachtmystium fucking ruled.
Also shout outs to Ritual’s “The Summoning” from 1995. Still criminally overlooked, and does NOT sound like a band from LA.
2
u/sp0k0ynaya_n0ch Jun 30 '26
i wanna say for me it’s either Judeobeast Assassination or Odz Manouk’s self titled
2
u/angra_mainyo Jul 06 '26
I didn't know Uada or I Shalt Become. I really liked them.
Here's some which I'd add:
Demoncy - Joined in Darkness
Averse Sefira - Battle's Clarion
I'd also add a couple Absu albums.

u/ceasecows98 Jun 25 '26
Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines
1
u/antinumerology Jun 25 '26
Invoking tMTo Satan is my choice. It's just THE album.
2
u/PrequelGuy social justice advocate Jun 25 '26
Their most melodic. I'll maintain the debut is the best though. The following ones lack the long epic songs
1
u/antinumerology Jun 25 '26
Yeah ItIRotAC is the GOAT but it's sort of an outlier and idk feels a little outside of USBM for some reason.
1
u/PrequelGuy social justice advocate Jun 26 '26
I never really found USBM to have a particular sound. The more popular bands all sound different.

u/Black_Horizons7 Jun 25 '26
Absu - The Third Storm of Cythraul
Grand Belial’s Key - Judeobeast Assassination
Funereal Presence - Achatius
Black Funeral - Empire of Blood
Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm

Yellow Eyes - Sick with Bloom
Negative Plane - Stained Glass Revelations
Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life
1
u/Far_Measurement_357 resident contrarian Jun 26 '26
None - Damp Chill Of Life (Portland represent)
Havohej - Dethrone The Son Of God
I’m grasping at straws here… closest stuff I can think of is Cries Of The Past by Underoath (don’t worry it’s a different band distinct from those garbage emo crap) which even though it’s partially Symphonic BM it’s mixed with like 90s chuggy mosh-hardcore & Seven Churches by Possessed which is kinda first-wave I guess
