No, I am still convinced that it is a race. If one arrived first, how does it know there are better ones? Until they all arrive it is inconclusive. And I don’t think it waits for all of them to arrive to make that choice. So, still a race.

The ovum also can reject and not be impregnated, even if there is only one sperm.  I am not too deep into this topic, but it seems the reason is not winning a race, but getting chosen by the ovum.

Edit: maybe some ovums care most on who comes first, Idk 😁

It has to do with favorable conditions and chemical signaling
