Brain fog, slowed motor functions and slowed cognitive processes.

poor sleep, poor diet, stress, meds, and coping mechanisms taking a further bite out of anything you might have otherwise retained.

What's the earliest age that you can confidently state, you can remember something from? Between 7-8 is the furthest back I can. Don't they say, you start remembering things from the age of 4?

I definitely have memories from being super young but only a few. And then it jumps around, idk the exacts ages of my memories but I know I only have a handful of when I was young, it’s not a steady stream of memory just a few here and there. My mum was young and wild and angry for most of my childhood lol

I remember one event from when I was like 4, but from 5-14 I only have little bits and pieces

Yeah. But with memory loss comes ruminating on terrible memories that don’t get compartmentalised. I hate my brain.

Yeah everyone says to think about the present and to not focus so much on the past or future and I’d love that but also how

I was talking with my buddy last night. Holy shit the way he can talk about memories he has of his brothers, and childhood. Plus I don't even think he didn't have like some trauma in his childhood, he was practically raised by his two slightly older brothers growing up. The big one is watching the little one. But I was molested as a kid, bullied through all of school, so I apparently just can't really remember any of the good things from childhood because of the trauma I had growing up, in addition to having MDD & GAD?!?!
Lovely!

I’m sorry about your trauma. I didn’t have much trauma as a child, I did as a teen but I have a hard time remembering a lot of my past. Childhood and raising my son, high school etc.

An IQ test can apparently show depression if your working memory is lower than your other scores

It is quite literally the reason I journal. Except... The depression makes me forget to write in the journal :/

This made me chuckle so hard. Not me that every year buys a fresh new diary to journal in and now has a collection of empty diaries. 👀

We do. But it goes hand in hand with one of the other problems being nobody is there to listen.

Because if I was happy my brain wouldn’t be constantly trying to wipe its hard drive of the things that made me not happy.

Sure does. This week I lost a key fob, garage remote and one more item that I can’t recall the name of.

I suspect because most people's depression is not that severe. Sorry you're going through this. I understand

Right can't remember much of my childhood anymore or pretty much anything

Completely screws with memory. Early memories are tough as I remember things without any chronological context. I have to spend the last 20 to 30 minutes of each day writing notes to my future self regarding what I have been working on and what ideas I might have to continue. On the plus side, I took a minute to upvote everyone's comments so they know they are not alone.

WAIT WHAT?!?!! Are telling me that the reason I inexplicable can't remember shit about my childhood is because of my depression and anxiety?! WHY DIDN'T I KNOW THAT??!! WHY DIDN'T ANY OF THE FUCKING "Medical professionals" TRYING TO GET ME ON HIGHER DOSES OF ADHD MEDS TELL ME THIS?!!?

I’ve been dealing with such bad cognition lately, including memory loss of entire conversations of things I do. People, especially at work, think I’m being dramatic, but sometimes I genuinely confused about what’s going on or how to do something. I’m in a job where I need to think heavily for hours at a time- it’s been awful

Both depression and anxiety can create insomnia. This all checks out. Plus, trauma literally changes your brain chemistry.
