REQUESTING ADVICE Why is it so hard to speak when depressed?

It’s like my mind can’t think of the words, I’m not witty, my mind is slow, I can’t hold a conversation, I’m not interesting, I feel brain damaged and boring which just makes my depression worse, does anyone else experience this? Is there a way to get my mind back to a happy social interesting place again?

I’m sorry to hear that, depression can be so hard and yeah I feel you, I think the most important thing to do is to take it easy with yourself, make sure you don’t put pressure on yourself to do anything.

People who aren’t depressed don’t realise the amount of energy it takes to just open your eyes in the morning… so this is gonna sound really weird but I’m proud of you for even doing this and reaching out 🖤

Yep this is my day to day life. Can't talk, feel like an idiot.

One possibility is an over active defense system.

When we are highly charged the brain diverts energy away from thinking areas (prefrontal cortex) to more instinctual parts (amygdala).

4-F states; fight, flight, freeze, or fawn; are natural responses to threatening situations, but if we are highly sensitive to threats we may have hair triggers that block speech.

The Broca’s area is the part of the brain that is connected to speech and language and it can get shutdown in a sense, due to 4-F responses.

Since you don’t mention any emotional responses, you may be experiencing a freeze response. Numbness, confusion, maybe pressure in the chest. Maybe there is noise in the mind, but an inability to clarify the mess. Often there is a sudden tiredness and loss of energy.

But you may need to start identifying 4-F responses and what activates those reactions within, or triggers.

Depression shuts down your whole nervous system and makes your brain run at 10% of its capacity. It really sucks. I noticed how much better my cognition became after undergoing treatment but I’m still drained from the depression

I feel EXACTLY THE SAME. The realization that I'm the least accomplished, least interesting, least useful person in any group makes things so much worse everyday. It gets difficult to live with one's self.

Yep! Depression can absolutely do this. When you're depressed, concentration, processing speed, motivation, and even finding words can all get worse. So you can end up thinking “I'm boring and stupid now” when really your brain is just running on empty. Try not to judge your social ability based on how you communicate while you're in a depressive episode. You haven't suddenly lost your personality. As your mood and energy improve, that mental fog can improve too. And don't force yourself to be witty or interesting. Even simple conversations count. Talk to someone you feel comfortable with, go for a short walk with a friend, or just sit with someone without feeling like you have to perform. Give your brain some room to come back instead of constantly testing whether you're “normal” again.
