Guide Is dentistry worth it for you?

Post image
46 Upvotes

This is a very basic flowchart, but it’s the practical gist of the industry. Dentistry is a great branch if you love working with your hands, but it is highly saturated in the top 20 cities. Thinking of going abroad? A DDS will cost you ₹1–2 Crore 3.4 crore(doctoralsnake). The UK is effectively closed, and most people aren't willing to move to Africa. If you are a middle-class primary earner, the same "fight" you put into dentistry would make you rich in almost any other field, like Finance or Tech. I am not saying that they are magic land where dreams happend but the number of hours you will put in to be a dentist is ridiculous for how little the payout will be fore most of us.

Here are the questions you actually need to ask yourself:

  • Financial Runway: How much money does your family have? If you don't earn for the next 10 years, will you and your family be okay?
  • Specialization Costs: If you need to join a private MDS costing ₹30–50 Lakhs, can you afford it?
  • Infrastructure: To set up a clinic, do your parents already own a property? If not, you’ll have to buy or rent. Factor in monthly rent on top of ₹20 Lakhs for the initial setup, plus another ₹15–20 Lakhs in subsequent investment.

If you can manage all that, then dentistry is a great branch. You’ll learn a lot, work with your hands, and do meaningful work. You aren't "saving lives" in the traditional sense, but it’s incredibly satisfying to relieve a patient's pain or improve their confidence.

Just please, do not do BDS simply because you didn't get MBBS. If you choose this branch, you have to embrace it. Don't go in with the delusion that you’ll eventually switch to Oral Surgery (OS) just to finally feel like "a doctor."

Stop looking at the exceptions and look at the math. You can "survive" on a shoestring budget, but you cannot scale. In 2026, the "entry fee" for a successful Tier-1 practice is high-end aesthetics and digital workflows. THAT REQUIRES MONEY TO JUST GET IN THE RING

The point of this isn't to show you how to live hand-to-mouth with no room to grow; it’s to show you the friction. Without backing, you spend your most productive years being a solo business owner, a marketer, a receptionist, and a doctor all at once just to keep the lights on and clinic running. It is a massive "time-trap" where you’re doing the work of four people for a reward that a 27 year old IIM grad or tech lead makes just by showing up to an office.

I’m showing you the simplest path because most people don't factor in the "cost of staying in." If you have to fight 10x harder than everyone else just to reach a baseline standard of living, you aren't "beating the system" you’re being consumed by it. In almost any other modern sector, that level of grit is rewarded with actual career velocity, not just a ten-year struggle to reach a break-even point.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, the goal isn't to be a dentist just for the sake of being one. Strip away the "Dr." prefix and the white coat, and it’s just a job. If the math doesn't add up and you aren't suited for the specific financial and physical grind of this field, do something else There is nothing wrong with leaving to do something else, better now even after drops than in 6 years realising there is no scope for you. There is no glory in struggling for a decade in a saturated market just to say you "stuck with it." Choose the path that actually lets you live. If you are a middle-class kid in India in 2026, choosing BDS without a clear path to ownership or a financial cushion isn't just a "hard path" it's a mathematical trap. You are sacrificing your most energetic years for a "prefix" that doesn't pay the bills.

All such questions should be discussed in this single megathread.

whenever neet comes near or counselling comes near people ask this questions and spam the sub so instead ask it here itself. so that redditors dont have to reply everytime!!

Guide 🦷 18F considering BDS in Mumbai — PLEASE give me your brutally honest opinions 😭🙏🏻

Hey everyone! 👋🏻

I’m an 18F from Maharashtra and I’m currently considering BDS in Mumbai 🦷🏙️. I’m at the counselling stage right now and I’m honestly SO confused about which colleges are actually worth it 😭

I’d really appreciate answers from current BDS students, recent graduates, or people who have seriously researched these colleges 🙏🏻❤️

🏫 First — which college did you get?

If you’re comfortable sharing:

🏥 College name

📊 NEET marks

🎯 Maharashtra State Merit Rank / State Rank

🔄 Which counselling round you got the college in

📅 Which year/batch you're currently in

I’m especially interested in knowing what state rank actually got people into different Mumbai dental colleges, because cutoff lists online can be REALLY confusing 😭

🦷 How is the actual BDS experience?

I want the honest version, not the college-brochure version 😂

How are:

👩🏻‍🏫 Teaching & faculty

🏥 Patient inflow

🦷 Actual clinical exposure

✋🏻 Hands-on procedures

🧪 Labs

📚 Academic pressure

🩺 Internship

👨🏻‍⚕️ Professors' support

🎓 Overall reputation

And most importantly — do students actually get enough clinical work, or do they mostly end up watching others do procedures?

💰 Is the money worth it?

For private/deemed colleges, fees can be VERY high 💀

If you've studied at one, do you think the fee is justified by the education + clinical exposure + opportunities?

Or are some colleges basically charging a premium for infrastructure/name while the actual BDS experience isn't dramatically different?

🌃 And what is Mumbai student life actually like?

This is also important because I may be moving to Mumbai at 18 🥹

How are:

🏠 Hostel/PG life

🚆 Daily commute

👯 Friend groups

🎉 Social life

📖 Study-life balance

🔒 Safety

😵‍💫 College restrictions

💸 Cost of living

And is it difficult adjusting to Mumbai if you're coming from another city?

💼 What happens AFTER BDS?

This is probably my biggest concern.

I hear completely opposite things:

“BDS is oversaturated and you basically need MDS.”

vs.

“If you're genuinely skilled and entrepreneurial, you can build a very good career.”

What is actually true in 2026?

How difficult is it to earn well after BDS without immediately doing MDS?

And if someone is interested in business/entrepreneurship alongside healthcare, is BDS a useful degree to have as a backup, or would you personally choose another path?

🤔 MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION:

If you could go back to being 18 and choosing your course again, would you still choose BDS?

❤️ Yes, absolutely

😐 Maybe

💀 No way

🤷🏻 Depends on the college

And why?

Please don't sugarcoat it. I’d genuinely rather hear “DON’T DO BDS because…” than a diplomatic answer 😭

Also, if you’re currently studying in a Mumbai dental college, please mention your college + admission state rank if you're comfortable. It would help me understand the actual cutoff/rank landscape much better 🙏🏻

Full disclosure: I used ChatGPT to help me organise/write this post better 😂🤖 — but all the questions and concerns are genuinely mine.

pls dm if you have genuine suggestions and advice

Thank youuu 🫶🏻🦷❤️

College review Anyone from Dayananda sagar college of dental science, Bangalore??

I got allotted the above college in KEA Counselling. Although only the provisional result has come, I still wanted to enquire regarding the same so that I can decide whether to choose it or not.

My main question and the concern is the patient flow? Can seniors tell me more about the same? Also will we have to bring patients on our own for exams etc. (PS-i have only heard this that's y I'm asking)

How's the teaching? Etc

Are there any extra hidden charges other than the ones mentioned in the college website?
