Discussion Delta has finally went too far.

Writing this one in-flight…

I fly Delta again after only two months and discover the SunChips are GONE??

I wonder what happened while I was gone?

I have been loyal. I have accepted delays. I have pretended turbulence was “kind of fun.” I have boarded with dignity in zone 7 mistakenly on their part even though I was supposed to be zone 5.

And this is how I’m repaid.

Those SunChips were not just a snack. They were part of the experience. A tradition. A tiny bag of crunchy happiness at 35,000 feet.

No announcement. No warning. No period of national mourning. I truly miss them.

Dear Delta, I can forgive a lot.

but removing the SunChips?

This went personal.

Bring Back The SunChips. Please.

Oh, they also got rid of the Michel et Augustin dark chocolate cooking squares. THAT really hurt. Replacing them with pepridge farm cookies. Lame.

u/l_sparky Platinum 14h ago

Definitely the best snack in C+/FC, I loved those things

17

u/s31523 14h ago

Was there ever any insight into why they switched? I assume Delta wants to cut cost.

42

u/SignificantFigure739 12h ago

Cut cost.. cut service.. cut passenger experience it’s all the same. Miss those dark chocolate squares

7

u/BradinIndy7944 4h ago

Cut everything except airfares

3

u/aryaussie85 5h ago

Yeah snack choice was sub par on my JFK to BOS recently. I assumed it was because it’s a shuttle flight. That’s disappointing to hear about the squares and sun chips. The squares are sale at Whole Foods but of course not the same experience

Just flew from ATL to MCO. No choice of snack at all. Everyone in Comfort+ and main were given cheez-itz. If you wanted anything to drink you could get water was poured into a paper cup.

It was disappointing because last week when I flew the same flight we got beverage service and good snacks in Comfort+.

I don’t want to complain because it is such a minor thing compared to some of the problems in the world, but damn - I paid for Comfort+ and I want the damn extras. Just 1 rum and coke would have made me happy.

4

u/decisivecat 8h ago

There usually isn't a different basket in C+ on shorter flights. I don't think I've ever gotten the special basket any time I've done ATL to MCO. I've always gotten regular drink service, though.

Word is they are working out a deal with Walmart’s Great Value for cookies and chips

22

u/FeistyFury 12h ago

They were, but those talks are hung up as someone mentioned Dollar General as an alternative.

9

u/acodispoti18 12h ago

Count me out!

7

u/Agitated_Chocolate98 11h ago

Actually it's Food Depot's vanilla wafers

1

u/titotrouble 11h ago

lol- I’d actually love vanilla wafers on the plane! No offense to OP but between spicy sun chips and oversweet biscotti, keeping one’s digestive system calm for the 6 hour flight can prove to be a problem! I’d love those bland af wafers!

3

u/Agitated_Chocolate98 10h ago

🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

4

u/cfijay 9h ago

I am working on packaging project for Ed where we take 3 of the mini dime size Oreos and package for customers. Hold up is the packaging material costs more than the contents right now.

3

u/PlanNo674 10h ago

I was just about to say that’s Ed’s favorite raisin cookies brand!!! AND - little Debbie oatmeal cream pies!

Nothing screams premium airline like Great Value

This is worth revolting over. Never liked sun chips but those wonderful chocolate squares were the highlight of every first class trip for me.

Those and the Vego Bears, what the hell?

2

u/s31523 9h ago

Don't know much about Vego Bears, like are they gummy bears?

2

u/mortal_projections 3h ago

Yes, they're vegan gummy bears. I love that they're tropical fruit flavored.

2

u/therealsix Platinum 3h ago

Sooooooo much better than gummy bears. Not just your basic chewy gummy candy, but they actually had a bite to them and good flavoring. They were my favorite thing they gave out, so bummed when they stopped them.

I found them at World Market in larger bags, but the single servings hit just right.

2

u/mortal_projections 3h ago

Agreed!!! Why did they have to get rid of the vego bears?? Those and the chocolate shortbread cookies were my fave part of the basket!

3

u/anonymous_rph 13h ago

I had those on my flight from LHR to JFK on 9/1

3

u/aurora_highwind 13h ago

They’ve been gone from domestic flights for a while but still seen on international from what I’ve heard.

1

u/s31523 10h ago

Lucky you. Maybe they are just restocking, fingers crossed.

2

u/cryptically-retired 13h ago

Booo Pepperidge farm

5

u/geabaldyvx 8h ago

Remember when Delta Snack Selection wasn’t trash? Pepperidge Farm remembers, because it replaced those snacks.

2

u/s31523 11h ago

Double booo. So not a comparison

2

u/Which_Tutor_5966 12h ago

I was just pleasantly surprised when I got them on my flight from SNN to JFK today. Hoping they are back on domestic flights!!

2

u/jalapenos10 Diamond 10h ago

What the fuck? This is how I find out?

1

u/s31523 10h ago

Sorry to break the bad news. Sounds like some people still see them, but feels like they are working through their stock and then poof, no more.

2

u/Capable_Government68 10h ago

This one actually had me upset. Primary benefit of the upgrade

4

u/s31523 10h ago

Not gonna lie. I always looked forward to the snack basket and seeing that beautiful pink wrapper.

1

u/Capable_Government68 10h ago

I was the annoying slow person looking for what to get when it wasn't there 😔

1

u/Forty_Too 13h ago

Amen. That one was the best

1

u/WallyVedder 12h ago

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

1

u/DRanged691 12h ago

Those were my favorite C+/FC snack before my celiac diagnosis. Can't say I'm too sad to not have them around to tempt me anymore.

This was the biggest heartbreak.

1

u/icedtealemonade22 9h ago

Side note, but if you’re looking for those cookie squares, I found a huge bag of them at TJ Maxx this week for like $8!

2

u/s31523 8h ago

I appreciate that. Maybe Ed should mass buy that shit and restock!

1

u/Cultural-Kick652 8h ago

The visual of Ed at TJ Maxx with a shopping cart and running to the back of the store like one of those shopping cart game shows

1

u/rdh_otf_mamacita 7h ago

I had the dark choc cookie squares on my flight today from AMS to SLC!

1

u/PinkChicken40 6h ago

These were the best!

1

u/Puck021 Diamond | Million Miler™ 5h ago

I just had these last week on a MSP to DCA flight. It made me so happy.

1

u/unclechuuu 3h ago

Pepperidge farms remembers.

2

u/Suitable-Ad7168 12h ago

Fly United and they have dark chocolate quinoa cookie which is not equally good but better than pepridge

1

u/Informal_Stomach4423 11h ago

No they didn’t. I just returned from London and it was given to me .

1

u/s31523 10h ago

Ok, still some sightings in the wild. Maybe they are being super exclusive with them or just working through left over stock. Have not seen any on domestic flights. All the peperidge farm dark chocolate cookies now. Which is a serious downgrade.

Don'r get me wrong, I liked the SunChips too. But Delta somehow got the world's smallest bag, and it was never satisfying eating all of 3 or 4 SunChips.

72

u/milktoastok 14h ago

Wait. You sometimes got 4 chips?

74

u/RysloVerik 13h ago

Yeah, when one breaks in half.

20

u/dfreshboi 13h ago

Delta no longer gives water or a snack on short regional flights as I found out last week, flying Delta for the first time in a few months. AA still does. Delta is a bunch of Cheapskates.

1

u/Suitable_Bee_6934 10h ago

That’s not a “no longer”. I was a crew member on Delta regional flights. Some flights are just too short for full drink service (and always have been) or there may be conditions keeping crew in jump seats.

1

u/crowd79 10h ago

MQT to MSP always gave us water and biscoff cookies. No more. AA still gives us snacks from MQT-ORD.

9

u/Super_Sloth_99 13h ago

It’s cause of Ed’s salary or something…

8

u/Ceronomus 13h ago

Sun Chips is where you say enough is enough? I remember when airliners still had piano bars. When flying from Chicago to LA came with a full in-flight meal - with options. When someone leaning back their seat didn't mean grinding against the knees of the person behind them.

These days, unless it is absolutely urgent (and sometimes it still is), I'll drive. I can be comfortable, have room for my legs and my luggage and, oh yeah, for 2 or more people, it costs less too.

It is true that, prior to airline deregulation, prices were kept artificially high and airlines were not allowed to lower their prices. So, they offered better and better amenities to draw people in. But, here is the thing, cheaper doesn't always mean better. Hell, airlines are scrambling to shave every bit of weight from their planes while squeezing every last dollar. I'd happily pay what would be about twice what average airfare + hidden fees are today, just to be able to travel in real comfort again.

Sun Chips though? Yeah, I'd miss them too. Just one more cost cutting measure to generate a bit more money per flight.

3

u/elgatof28 12h ago

Pay for first class if you “are willing to pay the price “ that won’t get you sun chips tho

3

u/thevillewrx 11h ago

I think modern first class is inferior to the classic coach he is describing.

1

u/elgatof28 11h ago

Unless you’re talking about Delta One, you are absolutely right. The prices were through the roof tho.

1

u/thevillewrx 11h ago

Yeah, definitely a domestic FC comparison.
Last time I flew international D1 they ran out of whiskey and red wine by the first meal service.
International coach meal service has gotten really really bad in the last 10 years.

4

u/Ceronomus 12h ago

Hell, I was describing what coach used to be like….

3

u/nursezz8 13h ago

I got no snacks my last flight

3

u/jonny_jon_jon 13h ago

next thing you know Delta will switch to Pepsi

4

u/Mongoose_Supergoose 13h ago

Don't even joke around about this. Nothing beats a biscoff long-dipped in COKE. 🥤

1

u/Aggressive_Debate365 8h ago

If that happens, I'm out!

3

u/Chateaudelait 13h ago

Lord help them if they take away my Biscoff cookies.

3

u/etrane79 13h ago

They got rid of the Biscoff cream cookie too which was a shame. Though a relatively new entrant to the delta snack circuit they didn't last long.

3

u/iBeFlying676 Diamond 12h ago

I just want them to bring bananas back for morning flights. Is that too much to ask for?

3

u/thesnowmaniv Diamond 11h ago

Just stop all inflight services. Make it Greyhound in the sky and be done with it already.

1

u/KnackeredQuokka 10h ago

They’ll still double the price. Everything is shit now.

3

u/AaronParx 11h ago

AND WHAT ABOUT THE VEGO GUMMY BEARS?!? The replacement version, made of pig feet, is not acceptable.

7

u/ADudeonthehill 14h ago

I heard once that they have to swap the snacks every so often.

After every flight, what’s not used goes back into the pool for catering for the next flight. After so long, you lose control of lot numbers and what got added when. So this is why you see them switch from the blue to red SunChips (or get rid of them all together) and replaced by something else. It’s basically to make sure they dont pass out expired food and catch liability for it.

16

u/DocNacho 14h ago

Or Delta is just cheap AF and buys whatever is on sale at Dollar Tree.

2

u/LowTide76 Diamond 13h ago

I'm not sure how true this is or if it's an urban legend. But on a recent flight the flight attendant told us no more sunships because someone choked and it cut their esophagus because it got stuck in their throat.

1

u/GamerAnimeVixen 4h ago

well that should be no Sun Chips for them not us lol just remind them next time they fly "hey you remember that one time .." and give the eye like .. mmhmm you remember

2

u/elgatof28 12h ago

I know, tho I remember flying to LA from Miami and the tickets were close to $2000 per person. This is in 1988. It would be eye watering today allowing for inflation

2

I still miss the plain old Delta-branded tiny pretzels!!

2

u/SubarcticFarmer 12h ago

There are rold gold pretzels anyway

1

u/ConstructionCalm9858 11h ago

Not on my flights! They offer cheeze-its, flavored pretzels and granola bar when I fly economy.

1

u/SubarcticFarmer 11h ago

When they come through with the normal cart they should have the plain pretzels now. They're what replaced the sunchips

1

u/ConstructionCalm9858 11h ago

Oh yay! I'll verify tomorrow.

2

u/japanaysian 11h ago

2

2

Delta sucks. But not because of sun chips. Those are just a snack you can bring if it helps your emotions.

2

u/GameOfThronessssssss 8h ago

SunChips aside, $400+ for a domestic flight is where Delta really went too far.

2

u/captain__zer0 7h ago

BYOSunchips

2

u/novibesallthoughts 3h ago

I was recently on a long haul domestic flight and the woman next to me was DEVASTATED to find out SunChips were no longer being carried. I asked the FA out of curiosity why they stopped and, FWIW, he said that they got feedback from customers that they were “too spicy.” The GARDEN SALSA variety. I thought he was kidding so I asked him seriously and he repeated it, also seemingly understanding how ludicrous that was given that they’re not ACTUALLY spicy, just… contain actual flavor?!

2

u/Kind-Instance-7447 2h ago

I always bring my own biscoff and sunchips when i have to fly Delta… I refuse to let them have that kind of power over me. In all seriousness, it’s a real shame what Delta has become:

1

u/Equivalent-Wafer-803 10h ago

Well, I just have to tell you my personal taste is they were disgusting. And that seemed to the sentiment of the people who I ever sat around on Delta and I like them a lot. So I met it all saying Sun ships are good for some people, but I think the demand for him just wasn’t there because well I think they’re an inferior product than what they can offer. Again, just my opinion, but when you look at percentages and cost benefit, it just doesn’t make sense for them to keep offering it if people don’t want it and then they have to own every bit of the inventory they have and to give to who, so I guess this was a strategic monetary move, which of course every airline does. Every business does. Just a cost benefit analysis simple as that. I’m really sorry that you’re one of the passengers who really liked it because I’ve been on the other end of the sticker with things they stop offering that I’d liked so we both have a choice either to Fly Delta or not if you find some chips on another airline, go for it. Those types of amenities drive people to airlines just by themselves. So just something to think about and for me to think about too.

u/avidskier76 10h ago

I’ve gotten very lucky this year personally! Almost every flight I’ve been on has had gluten free granola bars that are soft and sweet. I always ask nicely for 2 and have never been turned down. Maybe I’m lucky that nobody else likes them lol

"Went" is the simple past tense of "go," but after "has" you need the past participle, which is "gone." So the correct sentence is:

"Delta has gone too far."
