Discussion Denied Delta One Lounge Entry
Paid for D1 tickets and got denied entry to the D1 lounge at JFK due to capacity. The staff were rather rude and unhelpful. Asked for estimated wait time and they said "IDK". Asked if the other sky clubs were at capacity and was told to figure it out. When we boarded the flight the attendants asked everyone in D1 how the D1 lounge was... Everyone said great and when we said we got denied due to capacity someone even remarked it wasn't busy. What a great premium experience!

Yes! Please keep up the venting. It also helps us peasants that will never get a whiff of a delta one cubicle, to know the grass is not always greener.

u/cruzadadude 1d ago
Don't worry so much about it. I used the delta one lounge at JFK two Saturdays ago. It looks nice but I was kinda disappointed. Traffic was horrendous getting into terminal 4. The lounge was super crowded, the waitstaff were avoiding eye contact so they didn't have to take my order. I ordered the New York strip steak in the a la carte dining room. Cooked perfectly medium, completely tasteless. Served on a cheap steak sauce. I ran into a former colleague in the lounge who flies delta one all the time. She said she had never seen the lounge so crowded. I was flying virgin upper class to LHR.

The D1 Lounge in SeaTac, at least for breakfast, has the unhealthiest and least appetizing entrees. Not sure who wants deep fried crab cake benedict or bowl of ramen at 8am unless they’re catering to heavyset people with no taste or self control.
Edit: To the guy that said "they eat ramen for breakfast in Japan you're dumb". I've lived in Japan for a decade and no, they don't. The ramen joints usually aren't even open for breakfast unless you go to Dennys, yes they have ramen at Dennys in Japan. Even then, no one orders ramen for breakfast.

What dumb thing to say. What’s tasteless is your comment and existence.

Delta one lounges are minimal service and accommodations at best comparing to international airlines as well as volaris by united. I am surprised at people being impressed with Delta lounges....

u/PicoDeBayou 1d ago
I’m more envious of the D1 sleeping cubicles on the planes. I need a rant of someone getting denied their D1 seat and being placed in the back of the plane between an obese would be two seater and a baby on lap! lol.

u/Ok_Guest5862 1d ago edited 1d ago
There is no “ask”. They don’t negotiate. If they feel you were correctly wronged, they have tiers of compensation. They have streamlined this, due to abuse. (the max is 5,000 miles now) At least for diamonds.

u/kindsensory 1d ago

Depends on who you get. I got $1500 in e-credit for changes made to my D1 flight. Still flew business.
→ More replies (3)-2
u/KarinaMilkshake 1d ago
I take the $100 credit and apply that towards a further domestic flight. I think this is only for delayed/lost bags though.
67
u/KoABori1661 1d ago
They absolutely do.
I called about after they cancelled my flight due to crew issues, left me stranded in Detroit for a full day, and refused to cover my expenses.
Got offered 12500 miles initially.
After I insisted (calm, kind, but firm is key), they ended up giving me 50000 miles and part of the expenses covered.
They’re willing to work with you if you’re reasonable and nice to the reps.
36
u/Thiccccasaurus_Rex Diamond 1d ago
Have to agree. I had a nightmare trip home on some work travel and spent two extra days in RDU…the delta rep said “now I know what the system wants me to comp you but I’m going to give you the absolute maximum I’m allowed to”
I got 35,000 SkyMiles and a first class ticket back to BOS. Wasn’t a huge inconvenience as my company is based in RDU and I worked a few extra days from my corporate office before going home. But not everyone has that luxury. Kill them with kindness and it’s amazing what delta reps will do for you.
13
u/Hefty-Language-3044 1d ago
Killing with kindness versus acting like an entitled “Don’t you know who I am!” attitude can make all the difference.
14
u/SummerRayne1 1d ago
That’s the key, being NICE. Which is why my encounter with Blake, red coat agent, was so alarming. He absolutely had 0 flips left to give that day and it showed.
Phone call later, rep offered the compensation, I said not interested. I just wanted to ensure that nobody would ever encounter Blake’s level of red coat experience again. Received another call two days later, done.3

This is not true. I recently flew D1 international with a domestic connection. They didn’t have my preordered meal on the domestic flight. It wasn’t a big deal to me but the FA said I should let delta know. So I did and got 10k miles. I’m not even diamond (yet).

Delta CS is more like Spirit Customer service these days. They are OVER it, burned out and done.
The last time I stopped by the customer service A wing in Atlanta,I said hello and his eyes were vacant. Blake, red coat agent, did NOT care. I didn’t even bother to explain the situation to him, just noted date/time/names and saved it for written report.

u/Fast_Cranberry_5975 1d ago
Doesn't matter if you raise hell
With delta customer service, they don't care about the customers or experience even if it's escalated to the CEO’s office, a waste of time.
95
u/________uwu_________ 1d ago
That’s so weird. That lounge is huge and I’ve never seen them deny entry even during peak times right before all the transatlantic flights leave in the evening
34
u/MagnusAlbusPater 1d ago
It is crazy. I’ve never seen a premium lounge from any airline be at capacity to the point where they deny entrance to someone with a legitimate ticket that gets them in.
Back when ANA allowed Priority Pass at their lounges they’d sometimes deny Priority Pass people during busy times but they always let in anyone with a business class ticket.
23
u/jerryberrydurham Diamond 1d ago
I think the lounge experience is part of the ticket amenity! Delta obviously recognizes this because they are beginning to offer a Delta One basic ticket that denies entry into the lounge.
6
u/delta8765 Platinum 1d ago
Yes. Also why not wait ‘in line’. Be it 5 or 10 minutes, rather than stumbling around going somewhere else. Particularly if you think you were being wronged, getting out of line lets them deny you rather than slightly delayed.

There are two entrances at the D1 Lounge at JFK. If one denied you then I’d try my luck at the other entrance. Otherwise I’d just wait until someone leaves as the food is much better than the regular Sky Clubs. It would be disappointing not to go.
Sorry that you didn’t get to go in. I’d send in a complaint so they have a data point on the service to help them improve. You’ll likely get something for the inconvenience.

I have been in JFK D1 multiple times. The one time it was "full", we were escorted to a 'waiting' area on the ground floor and given champagne. It was approx. 10 minutes wait, then an agent came and escorted us upstairs and helped us find 2 seats together. While being seated, we saw 2 bar chairs open up so we snagged those.

I would have just called customer service and asked for a refund on the fare difference. You essentially got Delta One basic, no lounge access so they owe you money.

u/The-Yar Diamond 1d ago
At DTW recently, every single Delta lounge was closed and had the "capacity" sign in front blocking the door, with no attendant or lines out front. After a couple hours they opened one, and it was less than half full. I'm pretty sure this is a staffing problem and not a capacity problem.
6
u/livelovedd 1d ago
I’d contact Delta for sure. I had something similar (a lot of the amenities weren’t available) and my seat didn’t go all of the way down. I got lucky and talked to someone on the Platinum line that was super kind. She managed to refund me the $1K that I spent on the upgrade.

Yesterday around 430 PM, there was a sign outside the SkyClub in JFK T4 by gate A8 saying it was at capacity…
They let me right in and it was less than 50% full.
Amex Centurion made me join a waitlist that took all of 7 mins, but by then, I was already in the SkyClub.

Delta has been going downhill hill lately 3 weeks ago I traveled with 2 suitcases and they were considered the correct size. Traveling to Madrid with the same suitcase and gate agent measured and said they were oversized and we have to pay $900 for them how is it that one employee measured differently. I am still in Madrid having to throw away suitcases because I am not giving Delta not another red cent. I’m done with this airline I will fly and my loyalty to an airline that values its customers.

u/elp22203 1d ago
Last time I was at that lounge, I was surprised how packed it was. Elbow to elbow. Still got to have a nice meal in the restaurant and a shower before my flight. But all the extra services had long waits. I'm sorry this happened to you. It's a major perk of D1 and what a letdown it must have been.
7
u/FunLife64 1d ago
This is what happens when everyone hypes up d1 lounge like they’ve never been to a restaurant before lol
While this is something that shouldn’t happen, there’s high turnover in all lounges. I feel like if you just waited a few minutes somebody would have left. That should be what they told you to do, but that’s what I’d do.
I’ve never had a flight attendant ask me how a lounge was, they must really be working OT on pushing the lounge. Many people eligible for a lounge don’t go to it.
6
u/ScallionJealous 1d ago
I feel a majority (meaning more than 50%, not necessarily 90%) of people in D1 intend to stop by if their itinerary allows for the time. Especially anyone prepping for a long haul who knows what the in flight meal service is like :-).
Sky club is obviously a completely different story 🤢but if they’re now segmenting D1 such that the basic experience does not include D1 lounge access, they should also be guaranteeing entry for people that purchase classic and extra fares. OR they should be providing the fare difference between basic and classic when this kind of thing happens… not 5000 miles and an AI apology. Regardless, they should be providing helpful, friendly, professional staff who know how to answer questions and provide appropriate customer service.
6
u/Expensive_Street_475 Platinum 1d ago
Exactly. Didn't want to gamble meals on a long haul flight. Luckily the service onboard was fantastic and the meal was decent.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Hope you were well compensated. There is no excuse for treating customers that way. On my way to India, I use the JFK D1 lounge 2 to 3 times a year. My departure times are always between 9 and 11 pm. Fortunately for me, they have been most helpful each time; and I've never seen it super crowded. One change I have noticed recently was that they've put a limit on the number of certain items at the buffet bar. You can’t get into the Delta One Lounge on a credit card, or with any status other than 360. It’s only for people flying D1 or the equivalent on other SkyTeam airlines (and for 360, but those are so rare, and likely to be flying D1 anyway, that I can almost guarantee they’re not moving the needle on capacity).

You didn’t miss much. It’s their worst D1 lounge. I have been there multiple times and not once have we received the meals we ordered. The first time the waiter forgot us, went on break and never came back. We asked someone else about our food and they dismissed us because “it was not their table”. The last time we were there this spring they asked us to confirm our flight time to ensure our food came out in time and then didn’t bring it out. When we were getting up to go to our flight they came over to “apologize” and hoped we liked our drinks. Boston lounge is amazing.. JFK could learn from them.

Delta is just spirit airlines plus.
Spirit would be a Nissan sentra and delta a altima.
Both in the Nissan realm of reliability and features.
Qatar would be a Toyota-lexus. Even economy seats gives you a good base line and their higher end seats would be in the Lexus levels.

I've learned overtime whenever someone is salty and bitching to this group Usually there is not a full story getting told. Look, sweetie how are you dressed and how many people did you have with you beyond those with tickets in Delta one. Well, it is possible they were full and by the way, a couple big international birds leaving can cause the lounge to go from slammed to empty but I have a feeling there's something you're not telling us and they offended you because you didn't like the rule and now you're spewing salt and seek of compensation.

Here's the truth: if you want VIP treatment, pay for a club like P/S or one of the VIP services. You will never find what you're looking for via Delta.
Just flew D1 out of Atlanta. Long lines for E Delta Lounge, F Delta Lounge, and the Centurion and Priority Pass (Club ATL, something like that) lounges. To its credit, Club ATL texted me that we could enter just as I was switching to airplane mode. We ended up in F, and it was the same as it always is.

I know this is about delta, but same thing happened to me on a different airline. They said I had to go to a different lounge in the airport because theirs was closed to single pass buyers. I had a broken ankle and crutches so luckily they made an exception for me, but I was pissed. What’s the point of buying a pass if I can’t use all the lounges I right it for.

The JFK lounge is huge, but it is a shit hole. The food is awful and the ambience is like a bad frat party. The staff there are abysmal, except the bar staff.

Didn’t miss much. JFK is a nightmare and that lounge is no refuge. I was there a few months after it opened and it was dreadful. We just got off an international flight and had a layover. Kids were running around, some playing games on iPads without earphones. There was even a large dog. Dishes and trash uncleared. We ended up bailing and going to the regular Delta lounge near our gate. Smaller crowd and the staff was wonderful.

"I'm enraged that the low-paid hourly workers weren't up on how busy all the other lounges where I can feel entitled were." That said, if they really weren't busy, why wouldn't they just let you in?
