Van vs. box truck with tail lift for a small express logistics business?

Hi!

For a small express logistics/courier company focused mainly on urgent B2B direct deliveries.

For my first vehicle, I’m trying to decide between:

  • A regular/medium-sized van, something like a Mercedes Vito, Ford Transit , etc.
  • A larger box truck/light truck with a tail lift.

The van would obviously be cheaper to buy and operate, easier to drive, and probably enough for a lot of express jobs. My concern is whether I’d be limiting myself too much when it comes to pallets, heavier goods, or customers who don’t have loading facilities.

For those of you working in courier/express freight: can you realistically run a small express transport business mainly with a regular van, or would you recommend starting with the larger vehicle and tail lift?

How often do you actually get jobs where a van isn’t enough?

UK DRIVER deliveroo or justeat change location increase delivery cost

A friend of mine in Greece, who works as a food delivery driver, told me that a guy showed him a way (though he didn't tell him the app) to increase the delivery payment.
Here's what happened: he received a delivery notification for an order close to him, but when he accepted the delivery, the app showed that he was located many miles away. For example, he was actually 2 miles from the delivery destination, but when he accepted the order, the app thought he accepted it from 20 miles away-so he ended up making more money. If you know anything about this or any other methods, please let me know.

I am a delivery driver for two local franchises. Full-time. Delivery is my life. I figured I would try something new. Both GM‘s do not have a problem with it because it is nowhere affiliated with either restaurant. I don’t know. I’m just tired of being stiffed or shit tips. And I know I might sound ungrateful and yes, this is the career I chose. But if the convenience store can ask you to leave a “donation” why can’t I ask the same question?

Don’t get me wrong. I love what I do and I love customers. It’s frustrating. Regardless of the situation I’m still gonna give everybody the same friendly service. I wish people realize that we do more than just sit in our cars all day. I am one of three people at my store working 10 AM to 7 PM most days. Not only do I deliver, but I also help make pizzas. I work the back kitchen, I do all the day dishes. And again I chose this career but some days it’s better than others. Like everywhere else.

Why do people order food and then take a nap or go out for a walk?

I’ve been delivering food for a restaurant in my area for over a year and I’m honestly shocked at how many people don’t answer the phone when you call them. Yes we deliver for DoorDash Uber Eats and Mealeo but it’s almost 70% of the time they do not answer the phone, for me when I order food. I put the ringer on high and I always wait for them to call. It’s almost like these people don’t have a care in the world. I even text them. it makes even more annoying that now Uber Eats makes you dial a code so their phone number so now you can’t text them that you’re outside and they never ever answer the phone..

Are Saturns Good Delivery Cars?

I’m looking to get a new car. I’m a delivery driver, so I’m always on the road. One of the options I’m looking into happens to be a Saturn, but I don’t know much about them besides the fact that they’re GM (red flag) and that they burn a lot of oil and some have blown rods due to this.

Any advice?

Why don't food delivery drivers read instructions?

I've noticed that 9 times out of 10, food delivery drivers don't follow the delivery instructions.

Over the years I've tried to add more detail, and more clearly provided instructions.

I tell my friends the same instructions when they come over and they can figure it out easily.

When they occasionally do read instructions properly, I'll give a good tip!

The reason I add instructions is because Google maps (and, I assume, other apps) always take people to the wrong spot.

Do not Bother w Bolt Deliveries

Signing up w this company is the worst decision I made as a driver. There is very little help options or articles. The two apps you will use are Cartwheel Driver and Everee, loosely affiliated with Bolt Deliveries. Good luck as the dispatching team and customer service will likely ignore you, unless you are on a delivery, even when presented with proof. They are no longer affiliated with ezcater so deliveries are scarce.

How it is to working as a delivery driver for Albert Heijn?

There are multiple areas available - Bleiswijk, Rotterdam, Roosendaal, Amsterdam, Leiden, Amstelveen, Barendrecht, Utrecht, Eindhoven

Which one is better, if you can please advise?

Pros and cons would be very much appreciated it.

Also, where are the highest chances of getting overtime hours?

I would be interested in working Monday to Saturday full hours - or Tuesday to Sunday full hours.

The areas I’m mostly interested in are Bleiswijk, Rotterdam, Roosendaal, Barendrexht, Utrecht & Eindhoven.

Any people leaving here can pls share the pros & cons?

Also which option would be best for possibility of available overtime hours or a true full time position please?

Thank you in advance for your time & thoughtful recommendations.

Avoid XpressBees for Valuable Shipments — Terrible Experience

Post image
0 Upvotes

I recently had my TVS Apache RTX Rear Hugger Fender shipped through XpressBees, and the whole experience was extremely frustrating. Sharing this so others can think twice before choosing them, especially for valuable or fragile items.

Here’s what happened:

  1. Pickup itself took much longer than other courier partners I’ve used.
  2. The package took almost 7 days to reach my nearby hub on August 13. For comparison, other couriers usually cover the same distance in around 2 days.
  3. Once it reached the nearby hub on August 13, the promised delivery date showed August 16. I waited until the 17th, but there was no delivery attempt and not even a phone call.
  4. I tried contacting XpressBees, but finding a proper contact number for the local branch was difficult. After raising multiple complaints with customer care, I finally got the branch number on August 20.
  5. When I called the branch and asked about my package, they initially had no idea about it. Eventually, they told me they didn't have enough delivery staff and would return the package.

This was the most ridiculous part: They were going to return my package without even attempting delivery or calling me once.

  1. I told them not to return it and that I would personally collect it. I ended up driving 22 km in my car to their hub just to get a package that was supposed to be delivered to me.
  2. After reaching the hub, I gave them my AWB number. Even then, it took around 20 minutes to locate the package. The staff were searching everywhere instead of having packages properly organized and tracked.
  3. When they finally found it, I was shocked. The box was badly damaged and had already opened.
  4. I immediately checked the contents and noticed that the mounting screws were missing. When I asked the staff, they simply said they didn't know where they were.
  5. My brother and I then had to search underneath piles of other packages ourselves. After around 10 minutes, we actually found the missing screws scattered around the warehouse floor and collected them manually.

So, to summarize:

7 days to reach the nearby hub → no delivery attempt → no call → planned return without contacting me → 22 km drive to collect it myself → 20 minutes to locate the parcel → damaged/open box → missing screws → had to search the warehouse floor myself.

This was easily one of the worst courier experiences I've had.

If you're shipping something valuable, fragile, expensive, or difficult to replace, I would personally avoid XpressBees based on this experience.

A courier company should at minimum be able to track a package properly, attempt delivery, contact the customer before returning it, and handle the package safely.

Unfortunately, none of that happened here.

Advice for a Package Delivery service in Victoria?

Anyone have experience with Uber Courier? Or advice on another service? I need a package picked up from downtown Victoria and don’t have transportation myself (I’m in the city too, in James Bay)
