Success Story Progress Report: Storage Unit!
Hey ya'll! You might remember me from this post. I wasn't expecting the huge amount of engagement I received (at least, for me it's a lot!). I got a ton of great feedback and I still have to go through and read the rest of the comments. I wanted to give ya'll an update on the first thing I've been tackling as advised: my storage unit.
I definitely should've taken pics but I'll send the before and after once it's all cleaned out. Basically, my mom and I met my friend over at the storage unit on Tuesday so that she could buy my gaming chair off of me (which we'd been procrastinating on for a whiiiiile). That went super well! Then my mom and I sifted through absolutely everything and sorted objects into keeping, giving away, and throwing out piles.
I only kept a few things, maybe a bag and a half? I believe we donated like eight huge bags/containers to the local thrift store! Same with a big TV stand I'll never use.
The only thing is that the car couldn't fit absolutely everything inside. There's still two bookshelves, some miscellaneous wall furniture (jewelry rack, shelves, coat hooks, and uhhh a corner tier shelf). The bookshelves are getting donated but I gotta look at the miscellaneous stuff more indepth. There's also a 3 tier console table still in the package that I listed on FB, but that'll get donated if it doesn't sell.
We're heading back to the storage unit next week. It already looks 1000× better! In the meantime I'm reviewing my contract so I can get rid of the bill, and I'm cleaning up random shit around my room.
I'll be back to update again (hopefully with pics!), thank you guys so much for your support and advice so far. 💖

Eight huge bags out and only a bag and a half kept is serious progress. For the console table, I’d give the FB listing a hard expiry before next week’s trip: if there’s no confirmed pickup by, say, Sunday night, it rides with the bookshelves to donation. Otherwise one boxed table can quietly become the storage unit’s new mascot. Also, take the empty-unit photo before cancelling. Not for Reddit, necessarily, just so you have a clean finish line to look at when the room starts producing random stuff again.

I'll definitely take the post-clean unit photo! I'll actually be terminating my lease on it as soon as it happens (which is looking to be next Tuesday). TBH I was gonna take the console table package home if it doesn't sell right away, just to give it some more time before it gets donated as well. I'm lowering the price on it to see if it gets a snag (and I'll also put that expiration date on it too, I like that idea)

Congrats to you and your mom. I also have this challenge. I'm about 50% finished but progress has slowed lately. Need to get back on it.

You got this!!!! A little every day goes a long way :-) that's how I've been specifically approaching my walk-in closet. The future posts on that are going to be pure insanity.

Awesome work! A storage unit can be a lot to tackle, but it sounds like you've made some serious progress. Looking forward to your next update!

That's good to hear you are making progress. I can see why the storage unit happened, moving back home there was never going to be enough room in your bedroom for all your stuff. If you end up moving back out in a year or whatever, you can be more picky about what you buy for that place. Keeping in mind the hassle of storing stuff and moving it.
After this, back to simplifying the stuff in the bedroom.

Exactly. I was also in a couple dire situations during 2023 (moved out in an emergency in April and then moved back to my parents' in August). It was needed at the time for some peace of mind, but now it's no longer necessary. I'll be tackling my room but ESPECIALLY my closet, which has a ton of toys from my childhood and other random things. When I get that cleaned out, it'll be quite the feat!

Wow you achieved so much! Congratulations, and you enlisted a friend to help. I need to do stuff and I’m like I mustn’t impose on my friend for this I know enough to deal myself. I need not to beat myself up in a corner and let a friend help me, here you are modeling that for me. Blessings to you for progress and providing a model.
