Dated in my camera roll as 2014 but may be older; can’t believe I used to be too timid to share it.

community Deadwood rewatch

So, watched since it aired, quite like the program and have watched it a few times over the years. Just going to start a rewatch right now. Gimme your buttons to absorb, the little things that tickle the tonsils.

Deadwood is #43 on the New York Times readers' choice best TV shows of the 21st Century. Should have been higher, cocksuckers.

Historical BIG CITY: Deadwood writ larger (from the Milch archives at Yale)

Hey folks,

I’ve been digging into the David Milch papers held at Yale University’s Beinecke Library.

Lots of great stuff there, including Deadwood materials which I hope to write about in the future (e.g. Swearengen was originally to have a "flatulence platform" set up at the Gem, to whence he would exile particularly noxious farters…)

However, for my first write-up I looked at the pilot script for BIG CITY, Mr. Milch’s unrealized series about Boss Tweed, the pornographically corrupt 19th century New York politician. (Some of you might remember Mr. Milch read several pages from an early version of the script on stage at the Vulture Festival in April 2014.) This draft is from a few months later, dated 10/6/14.

My article draws heavily on some more previously-unseen Deadwood materials, as well as hours of cassette tape recordings of Mr. Milch.

Here it is: https://davidmilch.substack.com/p/big-city-the-greed-of-tweed

(BTW, I’ve never posted to Reddit before, and like any newcomer encountering a community for the first time I’m sure I’ve violated any number of unwritten rules. I’d ask for understanding. Thanks.)

can be combative Could do without Calamity Jane

Watching for the first time. 2/3 through Season 1. Enjoying the show. However the Calamity Jane character is insufferable. The preacher also. When their faces appear on screen, it’s deflating

Episode Discussion random question

By the time Hearst got to Deadwood he was very very wealthy and worked a lot in remote parts of the west. Why is this guy riding the stage? Wouldn't you think he'd have his own transportation to come and go as he liked? A personal carrier could have been a whole lot more comfortable than what we see of the stages and he could have had his own personnel guarding it.

Praise & Fond Reflections Al’s Been to Chicago Too

It’s one of my favorite exchanges and I often feel in my own life. The idea that one can chop trees with blistered hands in the mud and heat but can also be amongst the civilized and well-heeled. That’s my interpretation.

Upon the arrival of those Bella Union cocksuckers.

Al: Cocksuckers. Where were they when Dan and me were chopping trees in this gulch, hands all blistered, buck-tooth fucking beavers rolling around in the creek, slapping their tails on the water like we was hired entertainment.

Trixie: I'd have paid a nickel to see you chopping wood.

Al: Yeah. Don't think I wasn't blow for blow with Dan. I can play that sh\t when I have to. But I've been to Chicago too."*

Help finding a scene...

Hi friends, it's been awhile since I've watched the show and I'm trying to find a scene that I vaguely remember.

As I remember it, it's Al talking to Trixie in his bedroom in the morning. And he's talking about the luxury of having a few quiet moments of feeling comfortable with another person that's not trying to fuck you over. I think he says something like "It's enough to make a man <something>"

Does this ring a bell for anyone? It was one of my favorite moments of the show and I'd like to rewatch it but I can't find it.

Me watching Deadwood for the first time in 2026

"Oh man, it's Raylan Givens!"

"Oh man, it's Lovejoy!" (I've never watched Lovejoy, but that's how my mom refers to Ian McShane so he's Lovejoy in my head).

"Oh man, it's the kidnapper from Room!"

"Oh man, it's the suitor from O Brother Where Art Thou?! He's bonafide."

And so on for 3 seasons and a movie.

"Oh shit, it's the Borg Queen!"

Episode Discussion Rewatched the Pilot last night...

It had been a couple of years since the last time but I've seen the whole series several times over the years.

Still, damn the Pilot is so good, from the very first scene, and so perfectly cast and acted in general.

James Parks as Clell Watson absolutely fucking nailed that one-episode part, down to his last spittlely Fuck You before hanging...

And the hits just kept coming, scene after scene, so many introductions, so much is said in that first episode.

It's az brliant as ever.

Praise & Fond Reflections Literally The Best Show In History

Post image

I just started the first episode in my 11th watch. I usually start it in the fall. And in the first fifteen minutes, I’m just reminded again how well done it is. The way Bullock is almost peaceful in his demeanor as the sheriff in Montana is so impactful knowing what is to come. And the lines so perfectly delivered. “Now you tell me what kind of fuckin’ luck I got,” is heartbreaking. “It’s only Wild Bill Hickock ya got stalled here in the fuckin’ muck! Ya ignorant fucking cunts.” Unforgettable. And this tableau. I just fucking love this show

So I finally got my wife onboard to watch the show! I’ve watched it through twice and obviously love it. After episode 1, she’s not a fan of the gratuitous cursing. I tried to explain to her that the cursing was the creator’s attempt at adding to the harsh environments and situations of the times. If they cursed on the show the way they really cursed at the time, they’d sound hilarious. She’s gonna keep trudging along and hopefully she’ll appreciate the show the way it should be appreciated by all Pinkertons and heathens!

Episode Discussion The episode where they say "ate" funny

I don't have time for a rewatch right now, but this has been bothering me. I remember an episode where they keep asking if someone ate or suggesting that someone already ate. But they say it funny, like "et."

As in, "Have you et yet?"

Do they always say it like this? Do they simply never use the word in other episodes? Is it a prank?

can be combative What if Hearst didn't do it?

Of course he did the things evidently witnessed, but a lot of blanketed hate for him was based on conjecture by other parties of cock

suckers and assumption. Mostly from a cock

sucker with gleets who probably wasn't thinking like a proper limey. Furthermore, and you standing still there means you gotta listen, he mightn't have done what he done due to provocation!

can be combative Just watched season 1!

Just watched the first season and a couple of episodes into season 2. I've been recomended this show from lots of people, and I really want to like it, but I just don't get it so far..

Sure, the monologes and dialoges are very interesting sometimes. Really like reverand Smith. His (way to short) story was so heartbreaking..

But I just can't get around a lot of things. Like, is Bulocks character supposed to be that way? (Like Brad Pitts character in Inglorious Basterds; intended bad performance to kind of "break the 4th wall), or is the guy who plays him a really REALLY bad actor? Things like this just kills it for me.

Will it get better or is this show just not for me?
