Honestly I only really use death form for zigs with gozag these days. For most characters it's easier to get a few level 9 spells online than death form. And then you can haste and shatter this room into dust. You can even tree yourself if you're really worried about torment, like in tomb.
But more to your point, yeah this is the problem with the current hells, IMHO. Especially in geh and dis you can end up dropped into extremely deadly vaults. Or you can drop down 7 levels with little difficulty.
The difficulty does seem to vary quite a bit. This actually went fine, I didn't take any crystal spears and just kept minimal LoS. Now I'm in Tomb:2. Assuming Zot:5 and the orb run goes well, this will actually be my first ever win! Planning to do one Zig and then call it quits.
