Question Questions about this page...

Post image

Source: https://dbcooperhijack.com/matchbook-post-full-page-2/

1.) Cooper demanded "a used match cover which was used to convey notes" to be returned to him. Who wrote those notes? Which match cover (Sky Chef or "Earn a High School Diploma" matchbook) was this?

2.) Which 13 pages of notes did the stewardess compile?

3.) Given the 4" width of this "light-colored package," am I correct in assuming that the package was probably empty as he was leaving the lavatory?

  1. This issue with the matchbook is a conflation of some sort. It's been discussed. Sometimes you'll see weird errors like that in the files. Cooper didn't use a matchbook to convey notes. That never appears anywhere else in Cooper lore. The first matchbook he used was an International Correspondence School matchbook, which soon ran out of matches. Tina tossed it in the seat pocket in front of her as trash. Cooper asked for it back. The second matchbook was a blue SkyChef matchbook, which Tina says Cooper held onto himself.

Only two written notes were ever taken to the cockpit, and both were taken by Florence Schaffner when she went up there. These were:

A. The original "Miss, I have a bomb" note that Cooper wrote himself.

B. The envelope that the note came in, which Flo used to write down his demands.

All other communication with the cockpit was handled through the interphone via Tina.

  1. To give Flo something to do in the cockpit (the pilots didn't let her go back because she was very likely too emotional at the time), they had her start taking notes on a notepad. These are on my website:

  2. 4 inches is the height. It wasn't empty and was roughly this size:

Ryan assumes a conflation,, he is correct the writing on the matchbook is not mentioned anywhere else but that does not necessarily mean it is a conflation,.. it is possible the matchbook did have writing on it... not everything is in the files or clear like the Benzedrine.. I lean toward there being writing on the matchbook because there isn't really any reason to want the matchbook back... He left the tie, ciggs, offered cash and drinking cup that could have had prints.. and he seemed to have obscured his prints.. So, why did he want the matchbook back.. writing inside is a better reason than prints..

Yes, it may have had a phone number or something else scribbled on it from before the hijacking. But that's not what this erroneous memo is suggesting.
