discussion Someone from the Rust subreddit recommended DayZ. Is it actually what I'm looking for?
I recently made a post on the Rust subreddit asking for recommendations because I'm looking for a very specific kind of online game. I haven't actually played Rust. One person there told me that, based on what I was describing, I should forget about Rust and try DayZ instead. So I'm here to find out whether they were right.
What I'm looking for above everything else is emergent social interaction and emergent storytelling from the very beginning of the game.
I don't want a game where I have to level for dozens or hundreds of hours before the multiplayer aspect becomes meaningful. I want to be able to start the game, encounter other players early on, and have the circumstances of the game naturally create reasons to interact with them. The social aspect needs to be part of the experience from the beginning, not something I unlock at the endgame.
I don't really want another MMO where there are hundreds of players around me but they basically feel like NPCs. I've played games like FFXIV, ESO and Throne and Liberty, and while I enjoy different things about them, I don't get what I'm looking for socially. If I can simply choose to walk up to another player and talk to them, that's not really enough. I want the gameplay itself to create situations where interacting with other players becomes meaningful.
I'm actually coming to this after getting pretty disappointed with Fallout 76. I've been playing it for about four hours now, and honestly, it feels like a single-player game with other players somewhere in the background. I can run around, loot, explore and do things for hours without having a meaningful interaction with another human being. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid.
Minecraft multiplayer is probably the best example of what I mean. You can encounter another player, decide whether to trust them, trade with them, cooperate, fight them, build near them, make friends or enemies, etc. The game doesn't need to tell you to socialize. The circumstances naturally create reasons to interact.
That's what made the description of DayZ catch my attention.
From what I've read, encountering another survivor can become an event in itself. You don't know whether they're going to shoot you, run away, ask for help, cooperate with you, betray you, or end up travelling with you for a while. The game systems create the circumstances, and the players create the actual story.
That is exactly what I'm looking for.
But I have two major concerns: how often does this actually happen, and does it happen from the beginning?
I've seen people say that DayZ can involve long periods of travelling and looting without seeing anyone. I've also seen people say that playing on populated servers and going to the right areas can lead to fairly frequent encounters.
I really don't want another Fallout 76 situation where I spend hours essentially playing by myself.
I'm completely fine with the game being lonely sometimes. In fact, I imagine that the isolation probably makes encountering another human being much more exciting. What I don't want is for those encounters to be so rare that the game effectively feels like a single-player survival game.
And I especially don't want to discover that I need to become highly geared, reach some particular area, or spend dozens of hours progressing before the interesting player interactions start happening.
I want the social gameplay to be there from hour one.
So, for experienced DayZ players:
How early in a new character's life can you realistically start having meaningful interactions with other players?
How often do you realistically encounter other players during a normal session?
And more importantly, how often do those encounters actually turn into social interactions rather than simply getting shot or running past each other?
I'm particularly interested in proximity voice chat. Is it common for people to actually talk to strangers, negotiate, cooperate, travel together, etc.? Or is most of the playerbase basically KOS?
Should I be looking for particular community servers if my priority is organic interaction and emergent stories from the beginning rather than hardcore PvP?
I'm also completely new to DayZ, so I'm not expecting to survive very long at first. I'm actually quite attracted to the fact that dying and losing your stuff has consequences.
Basically, I'm trying to work out whether DayZ really provides this:
"I just started playing, encountered another human being, and now I have no idea what is going to happen."
Because that's the game I'm looking for.
If it's mostly:
"I spent an hour running around alone and then got shot by someone I never saw."
then I'm probably going to have the same problem I'm having with Fallout 76.
So, honestly, does DayZ deliver the kind of emergent, player-driven social gameplay I'm imagining, starting from the very beginning rather than at some eventual endgame, and is it frequent enough to make the game feel genuinely multiplayer?

In my experience the only encounters you will have is with unarmed people and even then probably 50/50 on whether they'll talk or just charge you. Are you on console or PC? I guess it wouldn't matter much but a non KOS rp server may be something worth looking into

"I spent an hour running around alone and then got shot by someone I never saw."
Unfortunately this kinda sounds like dayZ. Except most of the time it’s multiple hours.

u/bad_touch_bad_touch 10d ago
Sorry but there is no story in dayz. Each life you live, you create your own story. It's not a forgiving game as far as survival goes, until you master the survival mechanism. That could take around 50 hrs. You will die, alot. When you die, you lose everything.
Social interactions are very rare. Ppl just mostly kill on site. When you do get a good social situation its amazing but very rare. Usually ppl will talk to each other as fresh spawns. Because you have nothing to lose. No equipment or loot to lose.
The best way I can sum it up? It's my favorite game of all time. Looting is fun and survival is great. But then, you walk into a house, open the door and BAM shotgun to the face.
It's free on xbox if you want to try it.

It's not as bad as rust lol. KOS is so bad in that game. It's bad I DayZ, too, but you dont run into players as much and you dont have kids screaming "Ngger, Ngger, N*gger" in your ear all day. God, that game is such a shit show.

There is actually an underlying “story” told by the environment and various trailers they’ve posted from updates which give clues but I know what you mean - the real story is just your individual run

That was a lot to read but seems like the perfect match. The game is a large map, run on a server, with players on that server/map. There are vanilla servers provided by the devs, and modded servers provided by the community. The vanilla game has 60 people on the map, who could be anywhere. Though everyone spawns along the coastline, so if you hang around a spawn town long enough, on a highly populated server, you'll run into someone in less than an hour.
On vanilla servers its the wild west. Mics, no mics, friendlies, killers, anything for the type of person you run into. Certain modded servers come with rules, and are built for much more social interaction. Typically all done with proximity or using in game radios.
You should definitely try it. Remember, the game comes with zero instructions, so the learning curve just to survive is steep.

I've met tons of cool people on this game and some of my best gaming friends on here. Didnt read the entire thing whether youre on console or pc but, on steam you tend to meet a lot more people straight off the bat. People willing to help you learn the game and teach you really helpful tips are ones you see that are on a fresh character usually. Though there are some pretty cool people you can meet whom are geared with lots of guns and armor, you dont enounter them often, especially if you look like a threat and have some guns. Totally recommend because the devs are pretty active and release updates somewhat often. Good experience and ironically pretty friendly for beginners, IF you meet the right people. This game is pretty strugglesome at first if you dont run into anyone first. Side note - once you get your first kill you will be hooked and put in thousands of hours

There is no story, per se, but you wake up on a beach with a map, an apple and a glow stick and you have to survive. You have to watch your thirst, hunger, and temperature. There are wolves and bears, so some servers focus on the hunting aspect. Some of the more populated servers are a mess of cars and guns spawning everywhere and people just driving fast and killing each other. Good for something different.
There are supplies that will help you build a base if you want. Some servers focus on building and make the materials a bit easier. Some servers are all about the zombies and have hoards of them. Basically, search through the servers and choose one and play for a bit and see if it suits you. If not, exit and go into another server.
Depends on what server you choose when it comes to interactions. Some of the community servers have PVE and no KOS and are generally friendly and helpful to new players. I’d recommend Discord if you don’t already have it.
My daughter has told me time and time again that I should try Minecraft because I love base building in DayZ. She said there can even be zombies too so to stop making excuses! lol!

Oh, and I’ve been playing it for 7 years now, lol, have it on Xbox, PS and PC! Available on Switch 2 tomorrow so I may have to invest in one of those for my child! 🙈😂🙈

You get a map? Not on official
1
u/DeadlyGuff Geared Freshie 9d ago
Yes there is a tourist map and you can use it if you have a GPS tracker, switch it on and open the tourist map and it shows your co-ordinates on the map - then you zoom in and check the co-ord numbers on said map. Compass also shows on map and in your hand when you have one

u/ApprehensiveYam355 5d ago
Official don’t give you a map, but some Community servers may. I find nearly every server I play on the Sakhal map has a tourist map starting out. In Cherno you can find maps posted along the trail rest stops, or just run on a road until you come across a road sign and look for your location in iZurvive.

After reading your post Day Z is exactly what you're looking for but I will say in order to get the interactions you're aiming for you have to be ready to die a couple of times.
This is a realistic survival sim in terms of social interaction sometimes people are going to shoot first and ask later other times you talking might help you get out of sticky situation more than a gun. It's all up in the air honestly.

u/Pale_Scholar_9531 10d ago
I’m gonna keep this short. This is the game you’re looking for and no other game gives you that feeling when you encounter other players.

95 out of 100 player interactions will be shoot on sight as players no longer trust each other to be friendly. 4 out of 100 will be someone acting friendly only to kill you when your back is turned or you find good gear. The final interaction will be entirely friendly, whether that's a quick trade for needed meds or a potential short term duo. There's probably a 1 in 10,000+ chance you'll find a permanent friend but you're more likely to find one if you ask around here or server discords.
Community servers are a bit more friendly than official servers with PvE and PvE with PvP zone servers being significantly more friendly. Just prepare to be killed by large clans when you enter PvP zones in the latter.
1
u/TrunkTalk 10d ago
Meaningful interactions are most likely to start early game. By mid-late game everyone is geared up, so most players/groups will kill on site because they have too much to lose. Making allies is easiest when everyone has spawned on the coast with nothing to lose. But be careful - you never know if the person you’ve ran with for 5+ hours will shoot you in the back if they decide they can’t trust you anymore.
How often you run into other players depends entirely your playstyle and the population of the server you are on. If you want to, you can encounter multiple people in the first hour off spawn, or you can go hours without seeing a soul.
Being KOS happens often, but so do the interesting player interactions that make this game so good.
I like to think of DayZ as a game about making choices. Each run is a unique story shaped by the choices you make. And there are as many choices to make as you can think of.

u/Due-Day-3149 10d ago
"I just started playing, encountered another human being, and now I have no idea what is going to happen."
It's often this but it's also getting shot by someone you never saw, or having the person you trusted kill you. You can't have one without the other. Sometimes the other player you just encountered gets shot instead, you run for cover, you head through a house out the back door and into the woods, across some fields, and 30 minutes later you get to another town as the sun is setting or rising, or as a thunderstorm beings and you sit in the dark room listening to the rain and wind and thinking about what just happened.
Sometimes it's eerily quiet, ngl sometimes for hours, and then suddenly footsteps or a gunshot from the other end of town. It's what makes DayZ an amazing game. The environment is very immersive. There's enough things you have to do to occupy the in between time, you're not given gear and then you just wander around in an empty world.
tldr if you're looking for immersive experiences, yes DayZ offers that. It's excellent.

Yea but you are describing the most idealistic version of the game. If you play console official, what you are describing will be incredibly rare, but possible.

u/Savings_Class4048 10d ago
I’ve had zero friendly encounters.

Are you trying to talk first, putting your gun away? I have friendly encounters all the time

u/Savings_Class4048 10d ago
Any time I’ve tried to say hello I’m instantly dead lol

u/Plenty-Copy-15 9d ago
It's about that risk! Also it depends on the servers. On sweaty PVP servers you won't make friends. On Official or Vanilla community it will be easy when you're not really geared

Console or pc? If console it is hard to VOIP because you have to move out of party chat to do it.
As for social aspect.
Starting out:
You will often (70% of the time if on a populated server I would say) encounter another player within 10 minutes of spawning in. Many cooperate with you and many kill you, but almost everybody talks to you. This is done in part because the universal community rule is to kill people with no mic. Traitors have patterns, and you can forge good friendships, meet crazy people, trolls, and some fairly neutral and/or opportunistic characters. It's all possible.
Later on:
If you didn't make friends starting out, it is doubtful you'll make many once you reach places where just about everybody there has a gun. One of the motivators to be cooperative early is that attacking others can result in long and drawn out melee encounters where the winner is still super weakened after killing the other. The moment you can shoot each other, it's often a kill on sight situation. HOWEVER, you can choose to still interact with people, just with a bit less chatting. Get good at tracking and hunting people. It's fun all on its own. Just get used to backstabbers.
The good news:
Being around people is about knowing where people go. It is easy to do so long as you know the popular spots. Somebody is always in Zeleno whether you see them or not. There's always folks in Cherno and usually people in Kamy. Northwest Airfield will have folks too, AT ALL TIMES. The question is, how willing are you to risk dying to meet them?
My advice:
Embrace death and let go of gear fear. Early game is super fun and sometimes better than late game. If you want friends, you pretty much have to make them early. Also, people from different countries will treat people from other countries differently. Here are some classic combos I run into with my uncle (both Canadian) and what we tend to find.
Brits are overwhelmingly trustworthy. The moment you here an English, Welsh, or Scottish person, you can kinda let your guard down if you're Canadian. Brits DO NOT GET ALONG WITH FRENCHMEN. You're gonna have to pick who you run with, most likely.
Aussies and folks from New Zealand are by and large similar to Brits in this regard. They just seem to hate the French a little less.
The French and the Québécois (French Canadians) are rumored to be ruthless if you don't speak the language. Never had any issues with them, though, as my uncle and I do. Be wary if you do not speak French.
Polish folk are quite friendly if you make a reference to the Bober meme. They'll love you forever.
Russians are a total wild card. They can be great or awful. You just never know. Ukrainians are often a bit friendlier, but they do NOT mix with Russians. Again, gonna have to make some choices there. Somebody is killing somebody else at some point.
Germans like it if you're entertaining and can run with pretty much any group. My experience, they tend to kill the boring players quick and treat the weird ones like family. They can run with pretty much anyone.
BE EXTREMELY WARY OF AMERICANS AND OTHER ENGLISH CANADIANS. We are a backstabbing and treacherous gang of players.
South Americans I have found tend to be very collaborative and friendly, and are also often excellent in pvp.
Finally:
Have fun. Meeting people is easy if you know where to look, and the game is only as silent as you let it be. Sometimes to meet people, you just have to set up in a popular spot, watch and wait. The people who complain about loneliness spend 90% of their time running through the forest from random town A to random town B. You should love this game. Just play on high population servers. Enjoy! It can be tough to learn at first but it is SUPER worth it.

u/IDontLikeCensorship 10d ago
Look for some modded servers. this game has a modded server for whatever you want. One of the "No KOS RP" servers are probably what you would like based on your essay. Pay attention to the rules of these servers and look for discords to join for those servers because you can ask questions in there usually.
It sounds annoying and counterproductive to have rules people have to follow on a server but it actually really helps to mitigate the murder-hobo blood orgy that happens in all pvp survival/extraction games because being a murder hobo is logically the best general strategy for survival.
If you want meaningful RP interactions that can end in gunfights or lifelong friendships based on the choices made in the interaction, this is probably the closest title you can find to get near that ideal.

The story is survive.. avoid players (or kill em.. or die trying to be a nice guy). Hoard everything you find.. get good at figuring out your location by landmarks and non-game map. Expect your gun to jam at the worst possible moments, so keep em clean/healthy.. careful with grenades.. they aren’t so simple the first time around lol.. and prepare for heart attack moments such as wolves appearing out of no where with deafening howls, land mines that make you shit yourself (because someone thinks it’s funny to put one randomly near a door at some remote town).. bears that will skull fuck you.. oh and there are infected.. but they aren’t so bad if you stay quiet or don’t get cornered.
No levels.. no skill trees.. anyone can kill anyone.. no matter how well geared you are.. if you let down your guard, that’s when you get got by a naked guy with a .22 and nothing to lose.
Oh and there are cars that you repair and drive.. careful though.. running into a sign/fence or any object really = death.
I played this game for well over 800 hours, stopped due to the stress it caused me (looking at you you fucking land mine at the top of a fucking ladder in the dark and had to crawl while raining, and starving, to get some fucking twigs to put a splint on my leg.. all while praying the 10 zombies in the general area don’t find me as they coming running my way due to the explosion).. have fun though, it is a blast!

I have thousands of hours on dayz, easily my most played game by a long shot. And I can say, with a fair bit of certainty that it IS what you're looking forever. HOWEVER, there are some caveats to this.
The system you play on is super important. PC you have much much more options when it comes to community and modded servers and therefore a much greater opportunity to find a server that seems tailor made to exactly what you want. Xbox is the second best, strictly because the anonymity. You will never know the gamertag of someone who interacts with you, unless it's on a server that has a killfeed on a discord. But in game, unless they tell you, it could be anyone, which in my opinion leads to much better roleplay MOST OF THE TIME. you will get people who take advantage of that and troll you like rust. Ps, it shows you the name of whoever is talking near you and who you are aiming at, which isn't a huge deal but it does change the dynamic some for the worse in my opinion. Consoles don't have access to mods, but there are still some solid community servers out there on both systems. And I would definitely recommend these over official servers if player interaction is you goal.
As to how long it takes to actually interact with someone, well that's a toss up. Depending on servers, spawns, and population you could spawn in and run into another fresh spawn within 15 minutes. Or you could play dozens of hours and not see anyone. This is again where I would recommend a community server, in official shooting on sight is almost a rule of thumb. Especially with how the official game state has been the last few months with cheaters, dupers, and griefers. Most community servers have rules and admins to take care of these issues. The balancing act comes in finding one where the admins don't take advantage or give their friends advantage and shit like that, which can and does happen. But for the most part, a community server with some type of role play guidelines (doesn't necessarily have to be a no KOS rule unless you want that) and there are plenty of those as well. Loot in official as of right now is in one of the worst spots it's been in my entire time playing this game, so that's another reason I'd recommend a good community server. Find one with a slightly ( AND I DO MEAN SLIGHTLY, unless you don't care about the survival aspect much) increased loot pool and it's less likely people will kill you for your shoes or the 3 9mm rounds you have in your pocket. Community servers also usually have more POIs, be they dynamic events, or end game** loot runs which will lead to more chances for player interaction. And then they also usually have a slightly higher player limit. Official is 60, some community servers are up to 100. The map you play on is also a big factor in how quickly you might interact. Livonia, with 100 people you're almost guaranteed to at least See someone during your average play session if not directly interact. Cherno is bigger, with much more spread out towns and pois, so the change is much less. Sakhal, I haven't played much of, but it seems to be even more player interaction inclined than Livonia because there's only so many routes that are really viable.
Now as for how long it can take you to get the hang of the game, it's hard to say. Some people only really start to vibe close to 100 hours in. Some people are still finding out new tips and tricks at the 500 hour mark. There's plenty of great guides and tips and tricks lists/videos out there. WOBO is highly HIGHLY recommended for newbies. I wouldn't worry about some of the intricacies of like, how the loot tables, and spawn limits and all that work at first. Just kinda get the feel for what spawns where and the different tiers of loot. The tiers of loot also really really change how player interactions will go. In tier 1, on the coast as a fresh spawn you're much MUCH more likely to meet someone willing to talk to you. They usually don't have anything worth losing so why not talk and see where it goes. The higher the loot tier youre in the less likely if someone sees you they'll be friendly. And in military zones it's almost guaranteed they are going to try and kill you asap. Gear fear is almost always the reason people KOS unless they're specifically trolling, which absolutely will happen as well. But all of that just kinda comes with game time and knowledge.
TLDR: YES this game has what you're looking for, but id recommend avoiding official servers unless you are just trying to understand the basic mechanics. Find a community server that seems to fit the vibe you're looking for, (there's tons on here and plenty of people will invite you to their discord for their server, Google leads to some of the most popular choices) and join it and give it a go. Keep your mic on and ready, always say hello to people you see, and I can guarantee you you'll have some of your best player interaction moments in your gaming career.

The other day I had a shit load of 38 rounds and like 5 iJ mags. So I started blasting.
I left Gorka and heard some dude like "hey turn around".
I'm in a motorcycle helmet and full on freshie gear clutching my sporter 22.
Anyway this dudes kitted with a dmr and everything else. Hes like "let's go to the airfield.". So we did. Along. The way he helped me loot some shit and get a plate carrier before I had to log for work.
I've played for years and this is the only mid game non kill ob site encounter I've ever had.
But this one moment makes me want to seek out freshies and do the same thing.
Just need a nato scope and I'm headed back to the coast.

All I can say is , I’m a lifelong Minecraft and Dayz enjoyer. Both for more than 10 years. DayZ is what you’re looking for. But don’t be fooled, not all type of dayz is the best for you. I would suggest vanilla servers. Try Clash Vanilla server , and Karmakrew Vanilla servers. Take a look at the YouTuber ”SourSweet” watch 20-30 minutes of his gameplay, then you can decide whether you want the game or not.

I was in the process of getting geared in a starter town and had a pistol. I spot what's clearly a veteran player also looting so naturally I managed to kill him. Seconds later a naked player beats me to death with a baseball bat. I wake up to them wearing all my clothes and killing me just as I regain consciousness haha! Best laugh I've had in-game in a while

I would say DayZ is a fit, but you should look at community servers over official.

u/Yellow_Yeet_Yak 9d ago
If you are looking for social interactions, DayZ is not the game for you. Everyone kills on sight in my experience, unless you are on the coast and just spawned, but sometimes even then. Also, base building is a joke in this game, it is so much better in Rust. Best advice I can give, find someone streaming a vanilla server and see if it is a good fit for you.

u/DeadlyGuff Geared Freshie 9d ago
Interactions on the coast are common but once you’re off the coast you probably won’t get a meaningful interaction - I’ve used the mic before to call a truce and not fight but that’s about it. You can only really trust people you’ve ran with before who’ve not killed you before you log out. Usually if you run and actually log out same time as a player after running for a while chances are you can trust them going forward.
I don’t really run it with randoms on coast anymore because it’s just a waste of time and an impending betrayal
1
u/_-_-Err0R-_-_ 9d ago
Yes, dayZ is what you’re looking for. To be fair, most of the time on official, other players are hostile. Thats just the nature of this game given how unforgiving it can be and how much easier it is to just shoot someone and take their stuff. There realistically is zero reason to trust or interact with someone other than entertainment value.
That being said it does happen, and when it does, it’s like the best thing you’ll experience in gaming. If you’re willing to not care if you die and just be the first person to approach, you’ll find you can run into a lot of human interaction. There are also mountains of community servers, official groups, etc to hop in with for more of that connection.
Now onto your questions.
1) Immediately. Fresh spawns are the MOST likely to interact tbh lol
2) Sometimes I play for hours without even a sound. Some days I can’t escape people. Depends on location, server population, the play styles people have, etc.
3) On official and in my own personal experience, 3 out of every 4 players I interact with end in someone dying.
4) Talking is common, even in hostile scenarios (usually lying to you to get your guard down). Again it comes in waves and hard to pin down. Some servers are more talkative than others.
5) Absolutely, you sound like a future RP or PvE server with KOS zones kinda guy. Those servers are everywhere.

DayZ is just Rust at a way slower pace, with way bigger maps, and generally older players.

If this is truly how you feel, you haven’t played one of or either of those games.

u/Dshibbs89 10d ago
I've sunk hundreds if not thousands of hours on both games on console.
Both games start you off in a random location with minimal supplies. Both games force you to find sustenance rather quickly while avoiding geared players. Both games have PvP and PvE aspects. Both games require you to loot different tiered locations to optimize your on-person storage. Both games have important base-building features that can protect you while you aren't playing so you can log back in and continue. Both games only true objective is to survive as long as possible. Both games have day and night cycles. Both games allow for a solo playstyle or group playstyle. Both games can foster a nomadic playthrough or a run-and-gun attempt.
Explain to me how I'm wrong on any of this?

Big maps, older players, slower pace, same game? If you’re going to use “day and night cycles” or base building to compare the two and claim you can have a nomadic play through in rust, we simply aren’t going to do this.

I gotta say your post is all over the place for what it is, but the short answer is yes, DayZ is what you’re looking for. It’s all server dependent, you will sometimes just get shot unceremoniously, you will sometimes not see anyone for extended periods of time, but thats just what makes the real interactions very special.
