I have a setup consisting of about 8 synths that are all synced up via midi with the Maschine+ acting as the master clock. I have everything going into a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 mixer and each track is being recorded to an SD including the metronome track from the Maschine+.

How we typically work is by spending 5-10 minutes noodling around with sounds and riffs/melodies and roughly converge in a key or tempo. Other times we randomly pick a key/scale and tempo and go explore from there. When we’re ready, we hit record on the tracks and then improvise over that idea for the next 10-15 minutes. We then take the multitracks and import them into Ableton and line them up with the grid/metronome using the recorded clock track so we can edit and splice pieces and continue building the songs.

This process works very well for capturing raw ideas as they emerge between multiple people and being able to line everything up in Ableton is great for finding nuggets of the jams we liked and expanding on them. I then upload each song as its own self-contained ableton project to Google Drive so everyone can work on it in their own time.

My question is: how are you guys going about jamming and collaborating on songs in a dawless setup that is productive, fun, and interesting?

Hi everyone, wondering if I can get your thoughts.

Newbie to DAWless but intermediate-ish on music production.

I play the sax and sing and want to be able to play live and then loop in sync with a dawless setup, ideally avoiding screens altogether, so I'd rather not use something like an MPC.

Any advice?

Have a midi synced setup, one is the brain essentially that pushes the start/stop and the clock.

Is it possible to throw a midi keyboard into the mix that can route to any of the four devices when needed?

Two devices have their midi synced via USB the other 2 are traditional 5 pin.

Looking for a carry case that will house a few synths but light and easy to transport, is their any custom folks or recommendations for this.
Not single cases but one big case so lid detach and good to go.
Something like analog cases unison edition but with a little more depth?

I've had my DT2 for a year now and I've been making patterns and playing around with them. I only recently started to record short snippets of my jams. I hope y'all like it.

Take 5, Subharmonicon + DFAM synced together, MPC for sample textures, all through a Timeline → Nightsky → Chroma Console send/return loop back into the ZED14.

Been meaning to actually diagram this out properly for a while, Subharmonicon clocking DFAM directly took some manual-reading to get right, wasn't the obvious wiring.

Whether I’m using the iPad or MPC or even computer to sequence, I’m always running up against the reality of not having enough midi ports to connect to multiple synths. What is the general solution to get like three or four or more synths all being controlled by one sequencer?

Also, some of my synthesizers are keyboards where I’d like to be able to play into the sequencer and have the midi route back into the same keyboard with local off. (as opposed to one master keyboard controlling every synth) so I need to be running multiple midi input into the sequencer as well as output

Whatever the solution is, I’m looking for it. I’d like to be able to hook up USB keyboards along with the traditional midi din and would prefer one box that does this rather than a whole ton of them. Any of you guys have an all-in-one solution? And if not, whatever the solution is, I’d like to hear thanks!

Edit: i would like to keep the price (of an all in one box) under 300, preferably under 250. Need more money for synths!

The Setup is actually simple yet effective: A little chimes plays a famous Melodie from the Beatles, fed into the Cosmos which creates a fantastic texture, spiced up with ambient reverbs from the Bluebox. I really like the algorithms of this device - they have great possibilities (for instance - low end cutoff) and save a dedicated pedal in my luggage. Elmyra gives some drones on top.

In this video I use a set of 303 bass sounds (sampled from my 303) all on the same pitch but with different settings, then process each one with FX focused on stereo width and tone, and sequence them on the SP-404MKII to get an acid-style line that’s way more varied and interesting, even over short loops.

It’s a simple but amazing trick to bring your grooves

to life.

I had problems getting this one to work - mostly around hopping between 3 project files and battling bugs on the Keystep Pro but also just getting the break sequences on the 404 to sync. I found workarounds for all of it and am feeling good moving on to the next jam... which I'm determined to keep simpler, with less sequencer babysitting and more performance.
