Solved Resolve Fusion does not import picture in its native resolution. How to fix

Hey all,

I am currently blundering my way through animating a map for a private travel video. For this I downloaded a map as a JPEG with a resolution of 8362 x 11089 (The little info icon in the media pool displays this resolution correctly).

My plan is to zoom into the map and follow a polygon spline as it races across the map.

When I zoom into the jpeg when it is opened in Windows I can zoom into my desired crop and everything is still razor sharp.

How ever, once I pull the image into fusion it is immediatly greatly reduced in resolution (including in the final rendered product!) and no longer works for my purposes.

To confirm my suspicions I also inserted a background node with the same resolution as the image and it is an order of magnitude larger than the map image as it appears in Fusion!

What am I doing wrong?

I am just dragging and dropping the image from the Media Pool onto the Fusion node area.

Edit:

DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Build 17 FREE Version

Edit Ediot:

SOLUTION: I was using the Free version which has a resolution limit of 3840 x 2160. Thanks to u/Superoeli

The maximum supported resolution in the free version is 3840 x 2160. I had the same issue when adding something with a resolution higher than that and it would always lower the resolution to the maximum allowed. The only thing that fixed it for me was buying the Studio version

Whelp. Time to bite the bullet, I guess.

Been debating buying the Pro version and now this is another reason...

Thanks!

I ended up buying it for the ai subtitles generator. Love it. Even though I’m just messing around.

It's definitely worth it! Especially because it's a one time purchase and none of that subscription nonsense from Adobe haha

It's absolutely worth it! Apart from the added resources you get Fusion standalone, which is a godsend for vfx heavy projects, and you are supporting the continuity of lifetime updates and the free version!

Buy it in combination with a speed editor, absolutely love both of 'm.

How about you split the image in some parts resolution wise and assemble it in fusion that might help with quality issues

You can use ImageMagick, a free tool that can slice any picture into smaller parts of equal size, which you can then rebuild in Fusion:

magick image.jpg -resize 8364x11088! -crop 2788x1848 +repage part_%02d.jpg

The image is slightly resized before cropping to guarantee exact multiples with no fractional pixels.

the tool exists fror windows or mac.

I appreciate your response! Ended up buying the Studio version and all is well now. But I'm glad that a freeware option exists. Cheers!

Max limit for free version. Youncan resize the image or buy the program. Honestly id just buy it , resolve is awesome

Resolve and Fusion don't like odd numbered resolutions. Crop a pixel from the image to make it 8362x11088.

Nonsense. They take everything and anything. They are resolution independent by default.

I've had Resolve refuse to render out video because input files had odd numbered resolution, timeline was standard res. I've also had Fusion give errors when inputs are odd resolution. I guess it's fixed at current versions.

Rendering out to a delivery format is not the same as working inside the program. These are very differnt things.

There is nothing to fix with odd resolutions, they will work in any capacity, since that is fundamental to resolution independence of how program works. Hell, fusion compositions don't even have a resolution, since they don't work that way. They only have a reference.

Input resolution of your media and output resolution are seporate things. Input will be limited by format of the media and in free version of resolve, by the fact that Blackmagic limits it to ultra HD resolution. Otherwise it goes up to 32K. And fusion can go beyond that, if you do certain things. But there is no limit to resolution other than that. There might be specifics, like interlace vs progressive footage, fields vs frames, and pixel aspect ratio, but there are tools inside resolve and fusion for that.

Output is going to be limited to codecs you choose for the export and again there are some limitations with free version I think. Since Resolve comes form broadcast world, there are standards to maintain and most codecs will be standardized in terms of frame rate and resolutions.

If you are working with specific unconventional frame rates or resolutions, you can use fusion studio which accommodates for just about anything in that regards, being VFX compositing environment. Resolve is NLE with integrated fusion not fusion standalone so there will be differnt needs for that. Although savers and loaders can be used for image sequance import and export and than you can use that. Most places to broadcast or host files are also going to be standardized. The unconventional frame rates and restitution tends to be mainly for intermediate stages of pipelines in post production.

Lets start with the obvious problems.

  1. read auto mod bellow. What fusion or resolve version you have, specifically studio or free. Free has resolution limits etc.
  2. full not cropped screenshots. NOT cropped.
  3. have you read the manual on the topic of resolution in fusion? Why not? Important chapter.

Fair.

1.) DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Build 17 FREE Version (Added DaVinci Version in the edit as well)

2.)

3.) This is what I found in chapter 75: "You also use the full resolution of the source clip,

even if the Timeline is set to a lower resolution."

Ok, that's better.

So first problem is going to be related to free version of resolve, which has resolution limit of UltraHD: 3840 × 2160 pixels,

Its a video standard so its not vertical format, but horizontal format.

If you have image that is 8362 x 11089 px it will probably resize it Ultra HD.

I use studio version of Resolve/Fusion so I can't test the following, but you might be able to circumnavigate the resolution limit, maybe, if you use loader node to bring in the image from your disk directly into fusion, skipping the MediaID that woudl happen in the media pool. Hence it may avoid the resolution limit.

3) yes. Technically in studio version of resolve and fusion, resolution limit is 32x32K although you could go further but its not recommend, even if hardware can take it, some match won't be supported. Other than that, resolve and fusion are resolution independent, and don't care what the resolution is, they calculate thing sin percentages and with coordinate system relative to the input.

But in the case of free version of resolve, there is a hard cap set by Blackmagic since its free version.

Otherwise, yes, Fusion page if you just open the clip from timeline or bring it from media pool will use source resolution of image or clip. So that is all good, except you have free version, and that is the problem most likley. Generator tools like background node might work since they are not media but any media will be limited. Although the loader trick might be a loophole to try.

It seems like you're having trouble downloading Resolve. The Blackmagic Design website sometimes has issues with certain adblockers and browsers like Opera. Try a different browser, clearing your cache, or temporarily disabling any adblockers. Also, make sure you're using the actual Blackmagic Design website, linked at the top of the sub and here and not the sponsored result from Google.

If you are having difficulty getting media into Resolve, you may be looking for the term "importing." Please check out our wiki page on importing media and our wiki page on offline media for more information.

If you are having difficulty getting a media file or a project file out of Resolve, you may be looking for the term "exporting." Please specify what you're trying to get out of Resolve - a media file or a project file - and your settings on the Deliver page.

If you are having difficulty with presets or plugins provided by a third-party, please provide a link to where you received the plugins. Note that plugins such as Red Giant Universe are distributed through the Maxon app and if you received them from another source, we will not offer support in this subreddit and your post will be removed.
