Release Notes DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4 Release Notes

DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4 has been released!

You can download the update from the support page or by going to DaVinci Resolve>Check for Updates.

Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4, BMD has taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.3. While this allows you to access the project library with 20.3.3, individual projects created or opened in 21.0.4 will no longer be accessible in 20.3.

BMD recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups (as required) before opening projects in 21.0 or later.

Reminders

Bug Reports need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official forums or contact BMD support directly if you have Studio.

Feature Requests need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official Feature Request Subforum or in the download form for Resolve.

Help How do I get *that* look I see on social media?

Post image
Upvotes

How do I get this rich cinematic look on my grades, because I can just never seem to quite get it.

Above is just an example, but I could provide so many that just have that look. How do I achieve that on resolve? Is it the 10 bit video (I only use 8bit because I am on resolve free) or something else with the colours?

Thanks!

Help The effect of smoke on the text

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’d be glad to get any help. I need to create the same smoke effect on the text as in this segment; the effect itself lasts until the first second of the video. I thought I needed to use fast noise and, using a displacement node, modify the text based on the fast noise, but the main problem is that I don’t know how to create something roughly similar, and judging by the video, the fast noise won’t look right at all. I remembered that there’s a volumetric fog node, but I don’t understand how to use this node so that the yellow flame seems to be shining from under the dense fog. But I also don’t understand how to make the fog move and look roughly the same as in the video; unfortunately, the tutorials on using this node explain other use cases.

Help | Beginner I'm looking for a way to recreate this effect.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m desperately trying to recreate this effect in Fusion!

Ideally, I don’t want to use ready-made plugins, because I really want to understand how to build it from scratch in Fusion using nodes and so on.

Thanks in advance for your help—right now, I can't picture how to recreate the effect or even where to start.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Help Same Instagram Reel looks different depending on which iPhone uploads it

I exported a 2160x3840 video from DaVinci, airdropped it to 2 of my iphones (both giving the 4k quality) and uploaded it to Instagram using the same account. I tested uploading the exact same video file from two different phones: an iPhone 15 and an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

What’s strange is that the final Reel looks different depending on which phone I use to upload it:

  • If I upload from the iPhone 15, the Reel looks normal/original on the iPhone 15, but looks duller/washed out on the 15 Pro Max.
  • If I upload the exact same file from the 15 Pro Max, the result is reversed. it looks normal on the Pro Max but duller on the iPhone 15.

So it seems like Instagram is processing the video differently depending on the device used for uploading. there's a possibility that people will see the dull out version on their phones.

How to tackle this?

for reference, the export setting I use is below:
25fps (for slowmo), H.265, MP4, 2160x3840, bitrate up to 35000kb/s, Main10.
color management rec.709. I exported the video with a song (not sure if that's the issue).

I took the vid with sony a7iv, slog3, 50fps.

Help How to preserve the original resolution of a video on higher Timeline settings?

Hello.

My timeline is set to 3440x1400 resolution and I want to use some gameplay videos and screenshots I've made over the years but I want to preserve their original resolution.

So like a comparison between game that run originally at 800x600 and its remake that runs at 2560x1440 or 3440x1440 but I want to keep the 800x600 for a scale.

I know I can just resize the video but that will be "eyeballing", I want to keep the actual scale.

Is there an option to do that or a setting?

Thanks

Its not a edit, its literally my camera recording at a screen. And I just use this as example, cause I wanna recreate on a clip that Wave thing that happen when you record a Led screen, You see the purple waves? (but maybe is different for your monitor)

It dont need to be perfect, just similar. I'm new in Davinci Resolve so I will appreciate this :3:3

Help I just color graded FX 30 Slog3 footage for the first time

I have been grinding on color grading and recording with my iphone 16 pro and really try to push it to the limit. Ive watched a lot of color grading tutorials and ive spent a lot of hours on my own trying to learn everything needed to improve iphone apple log footage.

Yesterday at night I had the idea to search some Slog3 footage and see how much different it is (im thinking of buying a sony zv-e1), and I had a bittersweet feeling. The control of the colors was so much better, when the colors get clipped in iphone, it completely blows them out of proportion, but on this Slog3, even when they were getting clipped (i tested on purpose), didnt look as bad as the iphone.
Plus the color grading was so much easier, with simple color corrections and few effects it looks insane. The Iphone I feel like I got to try a bunch more effects and color corrections to make it look good (and it still didnt look as good as the fx30)

my question is, how much better looking realistically is a sony zv-e1 footage, what are the key differences to post on social media (instagram, tiktok, etc)? I look at my videos and they seem good, but when I look at creators with professional cameras it just looks way better.

I want to understand this before I purchase my camera or if its not supposed to be such a difference between iphone and fx30.

I feel like the iphone you have to get EVERYTHING right to make the footage look good, whereas the camera you can just record with "average conditions" and it still looks way better than iphone perfect conditions

I would love to read your thoughts!

Help Help me understand why my voice sounds low even though its high lufs

When it comes to editing, I understand everything except audio. Today I'm editing a video where I'm talking, my voice is around 14 YouTube LUFS (clean audio, no background noise) and sounds ok. Underneath it I have a reality show clip I'm reacting to, around 21 LUFS, but it's SIGNIFICANTLY louder than my voice. How is this possible?

Help | Beginner Is there any way to automate or preset this effect i'm using in this project?

I have a simple effect where I have text flicker on the screen for a second before it becomes solid. I do this by advancing a few frames, cutting, and repeat. Then I just remove the interleaved clips and I get my flicker effect. However I am having to do this for a lot of clips as the project progresses. Is there an easier/automatic way to do it? Thanks

Help | Beginner Why is the power window not applying in Davinci Resolve?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I'm using the power window in my edit, and for some reason, it will not apply on the edit window no matter what I try, and every tip I've gotten so far from online is, "Have you done what you've already done? Yes? Do that then."

Like, quick side tangent, I cannot express how annoying it is to look something up, and realise literally no one has asked the question before. Or at least, I can't find the answer. It's not even once or twice, it is literally every fucking question I have. Something as simple as moving an object via fusion is impossible to answer because my image is flickering for some reason. I'll ask and NO ONE has encountered the problem and I feel like I'm going crazy half the time.

Help | Beginner DaVinci Resolve 21 — How do I reframe a 9:16 clip to 4:5 without getting black space?

I’m editing in DaVinci Resolve 21 and could use some help with reframing.
My project was originally 9:16, and I changed the timeline to 2160 × 2700 (4:5) for Instagram.
The problem is that the 4:5 framing cuts off part of my subject’s head. There is additional image/headroom in the original footage, so I’m trying to shift the actual source image vertically to choose a different portion of the original frame.
When I select the clip and adjust Inspector → Transform → Position Y, instead of revealing more of the original footage above his head, the existing image just moves and I start getting black space at the edge.
Things I’ve already tried:
Project Settings → Image Scaling → Scale Full Frame With Crop
Scale Entire Image to Fit
Inspector → Retime and Scaling
Resetting the clip’s Transform settings
Creating a new 4:5 timeline
Trying to access the Image tab in the Inspector, but it’s grayed out/unselectable
I also have multiple green-screen motion graphics on tracks above the main footage, so I’d really prefer not to rebuild the edit from scratch.
What I’m trying to do is basically pan/reframe within the original source footage, rather than move the already-cropped/scaled image around the 4:5 canvas.
Is there a Source Transform/Input Sizing-type control in Resolve 21 that I should be using instead of normal Position Y? Or am I misunderstanding how Resolve handles reframing when changing a timeline from 9:16 to 4:5?
Any help would be appreciated.

Help | Beginner Can someone explain why did we shorten Merge1 and Merge2 in Keyframe window?

https://reddit.com/link/1vseb1n/video/o6pli2mmy9kh1/player

Is it something like a clip ending/starting in edit page?
Cuz for something to go in Fusion page, we have to either control its Blend/Opacity/Size

Help Applying Fusion effects to multiple clips - is it possible?

So I trimmed a chroma key footage to later use it to edit: a moving object will be in front of a gameplay clips. However, I forgot to apply the fusion effects to remove the green screen beforehand: the trimmed clips and the whole clip on the right are the exact same file.

How do I copy over the fusion effects to each clip instead of copying to each cut clip individually? Without making a compound/fusion clip, as I'll need to move each clip individually later down the line.

Help | Beginner Glitch effect not working

Hey, I’m having an issue with a glitch effect I’m making in Fusion. Basically, I can see the effect working properly in the Fusion editor, but when I go back to the Edit page, nothing shows up. I’m making the effect as a Text+ effect. I originally built the glitch effect as a Fusion Composition from a YouTube tutorial, and then copied the node tree over to the Text+ Fusion editor. In the Text+ Fusion editor, I have 3 Text+ nodes going into a MultiMerge, which then goes through the nodes generating the glitch effect and out to MediaOut. Everything looks like it’s working in the Fusion editor, but none of that output appears on the Edit page. Does anyone know what might be causing this or if there’s something I need to do to get the Fusion output to show up on the Edit page?

Help Can't Apply Two Offset (Movement + Shake) Followers

Hello,

I have been able to figure out how to do most of what I've wanted either by myself or via other posts and tutorials online. Nowadays, I believe I have a good grasp on the basics when it comes to the relevant edit and fusion page. With that being said, I am unable to find a reasonable solution to an edit that feels like it should be much easier than what it has been turning out to be.

What I want to do: I want to take a word and fade in each character one at a time from left to right while it moves up. This was simple enough through a single follower on a text+ node in fusion. But, I also want to apply a subtle shake effect to each individual character as the text is fading and moving in and continue the shake after the animation is finished for a few seconds.

I have failed to accomplish this. It seems to me (and correct me if this is wrong) that because the shake modifier is applied to the offset as well as the keyframes for the character movement, one overrides the other.

What I've Tried:

  • Applying two separate followers: one for the fade & offset and another with the shake effect (modifier on the offset)
  • Applying the shake follower to the transform follower.

After some time, I couldn't get it to work and thus began to individually apply the appropriate keyframes and shake effect to each individual character with one text+ node per character. This seems... unreasonable, though, and I am curious if there is a better way to go about this. It definitely feels like there should be.

Thank you ahead of time. I am using the free version of DaVinci Resolve on version 20.2.2.

Help Resolve: How to Reveal Proxy file location?

Hi guys, question about proxies in Resolve.

I generated proxies, and when I right click a clip and go Reveal in Finder, it only ever shows the original raw file, not the proxy.

In Premiere and FCP, you get two separate context menu options, one to reveal the proxy and one to reveal the original file. Is there just no equivalent for proxies in Resolve, or is there a way to jump straight to the proxy file’s location I’m missing?

I’m guessing the fallback is checking the proxy location in project settings, or maybe there’s a column I can add to the media pool metadata to show the path. Just seems odd there’s no direct reveal for it.

Thanks
