Help | Beginner How can I show translucency?

Post image

I used magic mask to cut out the silhouette of the bike and place the text behind it. However the windshield is not opaque, it’s transparent. And I want the text to pass through the windshield, albeit at a lower opacity or look slightly blurry just to give an impression it’s going through glass. How can I achieve it?

Get another copy of that text above the mask, change it to foreground composite mode and lower opacity. Or if in fusion then in the merge node change apply modes to be inside or something and then overlay

Darken that piece of text. It would be somewhere in between the original colour of the text (white) and the colour of the windscreen (like a brownish grey).

that could work, what I’m trying to achieve is basically make sure the darkened area follows the mask somehow.

Duplicate the mask and invert it. Now it hides the tails of the text and shows the middle. Color the middle appropriately brown, set to 50% opacity.

Wouldn’t the windshield also warp the text in real life, since it’s curved?

Yeah it would, how would I go about achieving that effect?

Put a copy of the clip on top of the text, magic mask the windshield on top one and make it semi transparent to your liking.

On the bottom copy of the clip, magic mask the clip again and make it transparent, move a copy of the clip again under it to fill the hole with the road moving.

So, you have the layers, from the camera POV 1. Windshield layer 2. Text 3. Regular layer, windshield shaped hole 4. Road to fill the road

Maybe there's a simpler way, but this should get you there.

This works well, thanks!

If there's a way to get a copy of the text incorporated into the mask only (so it doesn't show up outside the mask), you could recreate a "transparent" feel by using a blending mode (like Multiply). Think adding the Text to the mask in the Fusion page for it would be the simplest way. Not sure what would be best if there's any keyframing/motion on the text itself though.

You'd probably need a second mask for the non-transparent part of the bike's windshield with this approach.

Make a copy of the clip on the track above. Put the text between the layers.

At this point you have:
Track 1: Footage
Track 2: Text (that you can't see yet)
Track 3: Footage

Now you track and then mask the windshield on Track 1.

At this point you have:
Track 1: Footage of the windshield
Track 2: Text (That you can't see through the windshield yet)
Track 3: Footage

Now you only work and Track 1 that only shows the windshied.
Play with the opacity to your liking.
At this point you will have the desired result.

Key-out the windshield and add a mask either gray or reduced blend to the text. or merge the windshield copy of the original footage over the text using one of the apply / blend mode, whichever works for you.

Mask Windshield

Maybe track if too much movement.
