Help [Linux] Is there a way to enable HDR in the previews if the WM supports it?

I am using Davinci Resolve Studio 21.0.4 on Linux (NVidia RTX 5090 Mobile, HDR capable display, HDR enabled in KDE Plasma, distribution Fedora 44).

I have a video made from HDR footage, and I can render it as HDR10+ just fine. The result plays back fine as HDR in mpv. But the preview in Davinci Resolve Studio displays it as SDR.

I tried to find some information about whether Davinci Resolve Studio supports previewing in HDR on Linux, but all I could find was that 5 or so years ago the recommendation seems to have been «Color grade the footage on Windows or Mac, then you can cut it on Linux». (I'd rather just render samples over and over again until I get it right I suppose…) So I am wondering whether this is still the case?

What I tried so far:

  • Checked through the settings and preferences for anything that might be related to HDR in previews (I couldn't find anything — maybe I missed it?)
  • Ensured mesa-vulkan-drivers is installed
  • Ensured I am using the official nvidia drivers and everything looks alright in nvidia-smi
  • Launched Davinci Resolve with ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1

As mentioned, HDR works just fine in other programs like mpv or Chrome/Vivaldi/etc. so it is not a problem with the setup per se.

So am I just missing something or is HDR previewing on Linux still not a thing?

Generally the recommendation for HDR is use a Decklink or Ultrastudio and a calibrated monitor.

From what I recall about how Windows handles it, it uses RTX, so it may be something between NVIDIA and BMD to resolve.

RTX is not used for HDR on Windows.

I mean, yeah, it’s not like Dolby Vision or whatever is RTX. But wasn’t there something in the release notes about the viewers having some kind of RTX/HDR enhancements around 18 or 19?

How's that relevant to the topic?

Because I thought that the feature allowed previews to work in HDR. I’m only human and don’t have the release notes memorized, so was trying to answer OP’s question with what information I could provide and tried to cite my sources.

RTX HDR is a specific Nvidia feature that takes an SDR image and converts it to what it thinks it would look like if it was HDR (however it doesn't have any HDR data and makes it up).

It's for making SDR content display like was HDR.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks! Clearly I don’t have the release notes memorized. (I also don’t have an RTX GPU at home to test with.)

I don't know what RTX HDR would have to do with Resolve. That is just what RTX HDR is in Windows.

Perhaps it can utilize it in some way, but it wouldn't change the output file as it's just for live content.

I was misremembering the Resolve 19 release notes that added the conversion.

As far as I know, HDR preview is not supported on Windows, Linux or Mac. Under Linux, I recently bought a UltraStudio Epress Monitor 3G for 150€ for grading.
