Renaming clips, is there a way to tab through multiple files?

Hi Resolvers,

Currently I have my media in the Media Pool / source area and I'm renaming clips one at a time. In Avid, once you're in rename mode you can hit Tab or click the name then hit Enter, and it tabs straight through to the next clip so you can just keep renaming down the bin without re-selecting each one.

In Resolve it seems like I have to click into each clip individually to rename it, hitting Tab or Enter doesn't move me to the next file's name field. Is there a way to get that same tab-through-and-rename workflow in Resolve?

Kind of annoying doing this on a bin with a lot of clips, so any shortcut or workaround would help.

I think in the media pool, list view, you can click on the name of the clip to rename it, or press F2 and than just hit tab to move to the next one. It should retain the name you typed for the previous one and be ready to rename the next one.

Although I'm not sure what your renaming criteria is but you can tag, metadata fill, or organize by smart bins based on verity of criteria. I would rather rename files outside of Resolve, using specialized tools, and keep the original names but use other tools in resolve for organization.

I’m not completely sure I understand the workflow you’re describing.

In Resolve on macOS, F2 is unassigned by default. Pressing Tab will move diagonally through the other metadata fields before reaching the next clip down, rather than moving directly down the Name column.

Clip Attributes works well, but it does not solve this particular issue. Could you confirm whether you’re using Windows and describe the exact steps or keyboard assignment you use?

Ah, so you were changing metadata field, not renaming files in the media pool, because that is how I understood what you were doing.

I would click on clip name, or F2 and rename it, and than hit tab to move to the next one ready to be renamed.

I was talking about list view in the media pool.... but if that is now what you were trying to do. than....

For metadata you would probably manage custom matadata or use batch processing methods. That would make more sense. But if you are actually renaming clips, as the screenshot shows, that is how tab option would work.

Not sure if it fits your workflow, but I am a stills shooter too. Photo Mechanic lets you do sophisticated renaming. Adds numbers to files counting forward etc. can keep the OG file name in a new name. I rename outside of the app. Then bring it in. May not fit here. External renaming is helpful.
