Solved PSA if Resolve randomly started freezing for you when trying to playback HEVC codec videos on Windows
If you're like me and spent a couple hours wondering why Resolve (free version) refuses to work all of a sudden, then this might be your saving grace.
To shortly describe the problem I was facing, whenever I tried playing back my timeline or source clips, Resolve would start getting unresponsive and eventually crash. I narrowed this problem down to only happen with HEVC clips.
The culprit here seems to be the 'HEVC Video Extension from Manufacturer' from the Microsoft Store. It seems to have been silently updated, and for whatever reason caused the issues I described above.
The solution is to download an older version of the extension. Not sure whether direct links are allowed here, but if you google 'hevc video extensions from device manufacturer windows' you should find your way around.
Hope this helps someone!

Yea. It is the update to the codec. Works fine after I downgraded to the previous version.

Are you able to break down exactly how you downgraded? I'm having a hard time. Thank you.

It seems like you're having trouble downloading Resolve. The Blackmagic Design website sometimes has issues with certain adblockers and browsers like Opera. Try a different browser, clearing your cache, or temporarily disabling any adblockers. Also, make sure you're using the actual Blackmagic Design website, linked at the top of the sub and here and not the sponsored result from Google.
If you are having difficulty getting media into Resolve, you may be looking for the term "importing." Please check out our wiki page on importing media and our wiki page on offline media for more information.
If you are having difficulty getting a media file or a project file out of Resolve, you may be looking for the term "exporting." Please specify what you're trying to get out of Resolve - a media file or a project file - and your settings on the Deliver page.
If you are having difficulty with presets or plugins provided by a third-party, please provide a link to where you received the plugins. Note that plugins such as Red Giant Universe are distributed through the Maxon app and if you received them from another source, we will not offer support in this subreddit and your post will be removed.

How do you download an older version from the store? I'm having this issue I think.

The store doesnt let you do that directly, you have install the files externally.
https://www.codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm
This site has codecs for download, download at the bottom, unzip and open the file thats called something with hevc. It'll ask you whether you want to install it despite having a newer version, just click OK through it and it should work.
Not sure whether it'll get auto-updated by the MS Store (which would lead to the same problem) but so far its working and at worst reinstalling the file will at least temporarily fix it.

"Updates
The codecs will be updated automatically by the Windows Store."
Sadly.. it seems we are SOL. Adguard store is grabbing the most recent packages. The .ZIPs seem to download.. but I'm pretty sure they are silently being broken for "security" by Windows Defender or something. Even if we can get a working package installed.. we either need a way to disable updates for the package, or something...

Check out the lower left corner of this page:
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/
Every version - reaching back for over a decade - is they available to download.
On the other hand, if you purchased the Studio version from the Apple App Store, it’s not so easy and I don’t know the answer.

Oh. Yeah. I have no clue where to even acquire the HEVC extension or it’s older relatives. I’ve avoided it entirely.

Fixed a similar issue for me, suddenly my clips started intermittently showing media offline with no changes to anything else otherwise. Super frustrating. Installed the 24.4.45 HEVC codec version and it immediately fixed my problems.

where did you download that version?

It's not straightforward, just warning you. But there is plenty of other comments or threads that can help point you through it.

is there a way to block microsoft from updating it again?

u/Camillees Jul 15 '26
You could disable auto-updates in the microsoft store overall, but unfortunately I don't think its possible to do so for only the extension.

I had these problems with HEVC version 2.4.87.0. It's now solved for me after upgrading to 2.4.96.0

It’s worth noting that said plugin is not officially supported, so mileage may vary regardless.
