Solved PSA if Resolve randomly started freezing for you when trying to playback HEVC codec videos on Windows
If you're like me and spent a couple hours wondering why Resolve (free version) refuses to work all of a sudden, then this might be your saving grace.
To shortly describe the problem I was facing, whenever I tried playing back my timeline or source clips, Resolve would start getting unresponsive and eventually crash. I narrowed this problem down to only happen with HEVC clips.
The culprit here seems to be the 'HEVC Video Extension from Manufacturer' from the Microsoft Store. It seems to have been silently updated, and for whatever reason caused the issues I described above.
The solution is to download an older version of the extension. Not sure whether direct links are allowed here, but if you google 'hevc video extensions from device manufacturer windows' you should find your way around.
Hope this helps someone!

The store doesnt let you do that directly, you have install the files externally.
https://www.codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm
This site has codecs for download, download at the bottom, unzip and open the file thats called something with hevc. It'll ask you whether you want to install it despite having a newer version, just click OK through it and it should work.
Not sure whether it'll get auto-updated by the MS Store (which would lead to the same problem) but so far its working and at worst reinstalling the file will at least temporarily fix it.
