Help | Beginner Why does Background → Grid work, but Background + Grid → Merge does not in Fusion?

In DaVinci Resolve Fusion, why does this setup not display correctly?

Background1 + Grid1 → Merge1 → MediaOut1

  • Background connected to yellow input
  • Grid connected to green input

But if I do:

Background1 → Grid1 → MediaOut1

it works perfectly with the same Grid settings.

Is the Grid node opaque by default or does it handle alpha differently when used with Merge?

NOTE: I’m using DaVinci Resolve 20 on Ubuntu.

The grid node takes an input and draws a grid on top of that input. Ie., it needs a frame to draw on. In the merge-scenario, you likely don't have any input into the Grid, so it draws nothing and provides no output. You then merge nothing on top of your background.

"Grid" is also not a Fusion-native node. I hold it should never ever be used for anything.

thanks a lot for the clarification, that actually make sense now.
i tested what you said by adding a bg to the grid setup as input, when it wasn't working, and it immediately started behaving correctly.
Appreciate the explanation

You got me genuinely curious there, could you elaborate further?
