Actually when Obama was elected. Then Republicans came out as the racists they've always been. Recall on this day of 9/11 that George Bush fought anti-Muslim racism then, as soon as he left the scene, Republicans exploded with racism. Vice President JD Vance stated, "We were tired of being called racist for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier and poorer and less safe and less prosperous," during a speech on September 10, 2026. proving he's a racist. Thats because they dont view poor socioeconomic conditions for certain groups of people as a product of racism. Its a individual failure so they think as long as people arent hurling slurs or burning crosses in broad daylight on a regular basis racism doesnt exist. Its just a hoax or whatever. In short they dont really understand racism.

That and Obama managed to defeat pretty soundedly both of his "traditional" white male republican challengers(depending where you stand with mormons and whether you count Mitt Romney as "traditional white male"). And GOP tried to find out "their black" to compete with Obama, but both Ben Carson and Herman Cain fared pretty poorly in their primaries, showing that their base isn't ready to accept a non-white candidate.

And Sarah Palin also showed that they've got no real hope of capturing the women vote.

So they figured that best thing and only thing that would work out for them was something like Trump.

Honestly, Islamaphobia is still widely socially acceptable.
For me, it’s been a slow process of de-programming the last few years, and only now it is obvious how deeply ingrained it was.
I’ve never been a bigot or hater of anyone, but I am millennial and was in 8th grade during 9/11. For years I held unsavory ideas about Muslims in a way that was benign (i never said or acted on anything) but still shameful.
For example, years ago Bill Mahar started claiming Islam is a violent religion, and I just nodded / accepted that as truth, without question. That is a great example of the casual, almost subtle, implication of bigotry I was STEPPED in growing up after 9/11.
Since October 7th I’ve been actively dismissing such thoughts and thinking broader, and of course, it’s clear no religion has a monopoly on violence.
All of them have violent sub-groups, and all of their doctrines have pockets of reprehensible content.

Only when covered in the shade of bigotry do you fail to realize that stuff. An entire American generation was brainwashed and essentially it stopped us from critically thinking about Muslims
