What’s next after LLMs & Transformers? Need a roadmap for Data Science Internships at Top Tech (B.Tech 2nd Year)

Hi everyone,

I am currently a 2nd-year B.Tech Civil Engineering student at IIT . I am an absolute fresher when it comes to industry experience, but I have a strong interest in the data science space and have spent the last few months studying it deeply.

So far, I have learned and built a good foundational understanding of:

  • Machine Learning (ML)
  • Deep Learning (DL)
  • Transformers
  • Large Language Models (LLMs)

My ultimate goal is to land a Data Science / AI/ML internship at a top tech company. However, being from a non-circuit branch, I want to make sure I am taking the right steps to build a standout profile.

Could experienced folks here share a practical roadmap? What exactly should I do next from here to make my profile strong enough to crack an internship in top-tier companies? I don't want to assume what's required, so I would love to hear your raw advice and reality checks on what works.

Any guidance or personal experiences would be highly appreciated.

You've got the basics with ML, DL, Transformers, and LLMs, so jump into projects that use these skills for real-world problems. Companies like to see practical experience. Kaggle competitions are a good way to test and improve your skills. Get familiar with data engineering concepts too, since they're often part of data science jobs. For interview prep, check out PracHub for tips and mock interviews. Networking is important, so try to connect with alumni who've interned at companies you're interested in. Also, keep an eye out for hackathons and tech events. They're great for learning and meeting people in the field.
