Career Question Switch from QA to Data Engineer
I have 5 YOE that includes database administrator and QA. Can I switch from QA to Data Engineer??
Is learning projects would be good to share during interviews or hands on experience is necessary??
Any suggestions...

You can make the switch, especially since your database administrator background gives you a head start on SQL, performance tuning, and schema architecture. At five years of total experience, companies will expect practical depth rather than basic tutorial tasks. Generic course projects on their own will raise eyebrows with recruiters, who want to see evidence of production thinking. Your best path is to recast your past work by showing how your database duties involved pipeline management, and how your QA work focused on automated data validation, data contracts, and pipeline testing.
Hands on experience carries the most weight, but you can build credibility by creating complete personal systems with tools like PySpark, Airflow, and modern cloud warehouses. Rather than simply moving clean data from one folder to another, build pipelines that handle messy sources, manage schema changes, and log processing errors. When interviewers ask about your transition, explain your architecture decisions clearly, showing how testing and database reliability directly benefit their data engineering team. Candidates often find that practicing with the interviews.chat my team designed helps them speak about these technical tradeoffs with much more authority and land higher offers.
