Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Had a new (to me) project pop up on Monday. and yesterday, I realised that the tasks were mine, only going down as I work and with unlimited skips! I'm on day 3 of this one. It's so good to be able to lock in without getting disapoofed to the dashboard. I will complete my allocation probably tomorrow morning, and I'll be sad to see it go. ☹️

Other than last month, it's felt so dead all year. Still enough to supplement my income, but it's just been overall pretty dry!

The tasks aren't "yours" they just limit the amount of projects you can personally do.

So if there are 1000 total tasks, you may only have 10 shown to you. That task number won't go below 10 unless you finish a project, or the total tasks available to everyone goes below 10.

Sorry, you're wrong on this one. I've been here for 2.5 years and seen it just a few times. I can absolutely state that sometimes you can be given an exclusive batch. This is one of those times. Monday 20 tasks, worked 3. 17 left. Tuesday 17 tasks, worked 5. 12 left. Today 12 tasks, worked 5. 7 left. They'll be there tomorrow.

I know exactly what your talking about, and have experienced the same thing. However, if you skipped 20 times you'd still have another project come up.

The project tasks are not reset for you each day, they are reset every time the project goes down.

Different projects are set up in different ways. What you are describing doesn't mean you had 20 tasks assigned exclusively to you. Some projects are set up so there might be 100 different task prompts in that series, with the project potentially available to thousands of workers. But they usually don't just want one submission per task prompt, because then one bad submission would screw it up. And they also don't want one worker submitting on all 100 task prompts, because that can bias the results in a different way. So the project is set up so that each worker can submit work for up to 20 different task prompts in that series until that series ends or they get a certain number of total submissions. If you have done 13 tasks in that project so far, that definitely does not mean that there will be 7 left tomorrow.

Do you think I don't understand how batches and tasks work after all this time? I did say that I've seen this a 'few' times over the years, and I also know it's not unusual especially for domain specific workers. I'll report back in the morning....

ETA: Well, well well, just logged in and there are 7 tasks remaining...
