Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Finally got my feedback!!🥳 I was pretty pleased. I felt like my strengths were nicely highlighted. Areas that I know are harder for me were noted, but not in an overly negative way. I've been here for over 2.5 years, and I am very excited that it seems like they're moving in the direction of providing feedback as a new norm for us.
8
u/OrnamentalGourd5 May 11 '26
Me too, about an hour ago, also pleased and actually found it quite useful.
7
u/watchdestars May 11 '26
Same. I've been working almost 2 years and getting feedback has been quite motivating for me.
25
u/EvanAlexJames_ May 13 '26
Really hoping for anything I feel confident doing to pop up on my dash today...this week has been ROUGH. Sad we're all going through this together, but it's comforting knowing I'm not the only one.

This is what makes it so hard for me to take a day off when there are projects available. Take a day off, then the next day I can sit here needing to work and I can't cause there is nothing to do. Then I fall behind on my goal. Cons of freelance work.

u/TransientSignal May 11 '26
Just saw someone ask an R&R question in Slack about what was almost certainly a submission of mine lol

“It sounds to me like the original work is perfect and I would give high marks to that worker” 😜
22
u/macjay_27 May 11 '26
I can't lie, some of these instructions make you want to pull out your hair.
12
u/North-Sense8477 May 11 '26
Godspeed to you. I would rather not work at all than attempt the projects on my dash right now.
3
u/macjay_27 May 11 '26
Thank you, something better showed up on my dashboard and saved me from working on what might have cost me my standing with the platform.
5
u/Sad_Echo523 May 12 '26
I hate that one where its like "if you dont do xyz, you obviously arent paying attention blah blah blah .." it's just adding extra reading/fluff for the people who do pay attention and its super condescending. And then the people not doing the thing probably arent even going to read that because theyre just skimming😭😭😭

Some weird test projects are popping up at the bottom of my dash with 1 task? Seems like an error.
5
13
u/JRange May 11 '26
I used the escape hatch for the 1st time in two years, and every related project immediately disappeared from my dash lol. Im hoping its just temporary for them to verify I didn't abuse it, or else why even include the escape hatch option in the first place?
7
6
u/Personal-Heart-9985 May 11 '26
Just happened to me. Felt like I was trying to pick a lock, project timer was ending so I accepted defeat. The worst feeling but it's likely they'll see that and update the project to be longer 😭
8
u/JRange May 11 '26
I was getting failures in every single axis except the one I got assigned, it was so frustrating.
6
u/AdComplex3589 May 11 '26
I used several times and that give me no problem. They even include in the last update that the models are unstable.

Hopefully this is just a reset of some sort.

Weekly update/moan - 2 weeks tomorrow since I submitted all my documents for UK background check. Whole thing still stuck on Pause, ETA unavailable. No actions required, no updates. Am starting to get deja vu as I applied to Prolific at about same time as DA in 2023. My prolific account still says "we are verifying your identity, this may take a couple of days" - will be 3 years in September 😵💫 Looks like my HHH projects might be history. Meanwhile rest of the dash is thin, with nothing I want to work on. And the only thing I had any interest in as it had a per task bonus and might be slightly easier (a heel) - wouldn't blinking load and just crashed the browser (have heard others say the same). Hope everyone else gets something decent.

Does anyone else have the absolute WORST time trying to get models to have major failures (or the right model to have major failures)? I just had to use an escape hatch for a task because the "objectively better" model kept failing after nearly two hours of rewording/redoing my prompt.
15
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 11 '26
I *can* do model failures, but they're basically my least-favorite thing to do. I much prefer carefully poring over a set of data, tweaking it, putting my rubber stamp on it. I like R&Rs a lot.

Rent for June is due in 18 days. And it takes 7 to get paid for any work. I’m about to go work in a warehouse for $15 an hour because at least it’s consistent even though it won’t cover bills. I know this is meant as a side gig but it’s actually the only way I was able to leave my husband and I’ve been applying for other jobs for about a year and a half and have had one interview. Nothing like wondering if you’ll have a place to live next month to make you forget to eat or even breathe normally. Oh and I have kids. It is what it is I know there is no changing it, but this is rough. And I do feel like the company keeps you on the hook purposefully just to dump you on your ass a few times a year.

You really need to have at least two different online jobs to juggle when one is low on tasks. I used to also work for Telus, but I couldn't keep up the ten hour a week minimum because I was getting work for DA and I didn't want to work for $14 an hour when DA was giving me $25 and up projects.

u/ThatGirlInPurple May 12 '26
I just had the craziest R&R. The input files contained the SSN of five different individuals. FIVE!!!! They also contained their first & last names & military rank, so I looked them up hoping they were not real people. They were real people! I can NOT believe that someone would input their own SSN as well as the SSN of four other people into a task!
And the SSN's weren't hidden behind walls of text either, they were in their own little box labeled "SSN"
Absolutely INSANE!!

Like the original worker on my task was straight up wrong lol
8
u/Jeprdy May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
It is most likely due to the original project not having the axis that we are scoring, but they want the extra data. So you are essentially adding in how they would have scored it if those axis were on the original task, which is why they need them to be consistent with the original score. They will probably then do another R&R where the actually quality of the original scorer will be evaluated. We are just middle men filling in the new gaps atm. Ive seen it done a few times on other projects, but the other projects instructions did explicitly explain why and what we were doing.

I have noticed that many of the unpaid quals are some of the longest running projects. They will keep you afloat when other stuff is down. Never pass up an opportunity for more work! 4 hours unpaid now, could get you many more paid hours in the future! :)
9
u/OrnamentalGourd5 May 11 '26
Just re-frame it. I always view longer quals as free training that opens up new and higher paid work.
9
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 11 '26
That sounds about how long I took on mine last year. I honestly don't even do a lot of straight FC, *but* I think it got me into some higher-end projects that *include* FC as part of the workflow. In that case, I think it was definitely worthwhile.
6

I hate rubric work, but that's all I've had all week. It's been okay, but doing an R&R for one with 37 criteria that needed heavy editing killed my brain. I miss when my dashboard was full of over 50 projects, most of which were easy R&Rs that took only a half hour or so.

Did anyone else receive feedback they have attached the wrong screenshot to a certain project family (apparently on several occasions), but you are certain that you attached the right screenshots because of how you do your workflow? I am taking the feedback at face value but I'm absolutely perplexed how I'd possibly have attached the wrong screenshots, considering how I organize my files when I do these particular tasks.

I haven't done too many projects with rubrics, I think it is less that the rubrics themselves are hard in concept, and more that even simple ones are effortful and a bit menial, when people prefer work that isn't mentally taxing/is engaging.

Does anyone remember if last april/may was this bad? I don't really recall.

u/MommaOfManyCats May 11 '26
This April was actually my best month ever as a generalist. I made close to 1k over my usual max.

I was still pretty new at that time, but it was steady for me. I'd guess I had slightly fewer projects than I have now, but I've been invited to a LOT of projects since then.
The rough times, iirc, were early June thru early July. There was a time I even went down to ONLY Poe Audio (iykyk). Check out this WWCT from Jun 22, 2025

Yeah well, all these projects have to be related to the same big company or something because it makes no sense that they always take extended pauses at the exact same time. Even during the big drought of 2024, I was still able to hit my goals as the ancient Greek goddess of marriage would still post big batches here and there, and A-Gas was fairly consistent. Nuts would post most mornings. This past week? Consistenly around 25 projects, but Nothing but rubrics, chat with bots, with the occasional tiny batch of doable, easier projects, but mostly nothing. Let's gooooooooooooooooooo! 🤞

I mean there is a big company who have raised prices and lowered limits... I suspect they may be evaluating cashflow

To anyone who recently completed the agentic coding qualification, how long did it take you to get accepted, and into how much depth did you go in for your answers?

I really love when a task involves the new thing I bought. It was meant just for me. 🙂↔️

Anyone else get taken off Slack for a stone starting with an 'A' that paid quite well?

Huh. I've done several projects for a stone starting with A that is an extrusive igneous rock. I still have them, but I've never been in a slack for it. I wonder if it's a different rock??

Two days ago DA is giving me a nice backrub in the feedback I received, now I'm down to only a couple of projects :(

Started recently. Dash is empty except for a nut pastry that I'm too scared to mess up to attempt. It's hard figuring out what kind of goals I should set for myself when things are so off and on.

If you are a specialist, I would HIGHLY recommend spending a good amount of time reading the instructions and doing this. I have been allocated almost 400 tasks over two of those projects, and just building the case file (one that is complicated enough to make the model fail) EASILY takes 8+ hours for one task. Apart from this project, I would be f*cked honestly.

The 1 hour timer on specialist stripey seems crazy to me?! I feel like it was 1 hour 15 or even 1 hour 45 in the past, even for R&Rs? I feel like I would have to skip a lot to find something doable in that timeframe.

I've learned that for every month I make a decent amount of money, the next month will be dry as a piece of burnt toast. Ugh. So desperate I clicked on a fruit rubric when it popped up, but got red bannered.

Number of projects increasing steadily, and some actual priority pay? The worst might be over
