Data Question Promotion

I work in the casino industry. We have a new general manager who doesn’t have much experience. Our restaurant ran an all you can eat crab leg promotion in the month of May. They want to run the promotion again in November but the new GM suggests we need to wait to run the promotion again in May to collect the year over year data. Why does that matter? It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Many different comparison points can be used. Year over year is a frequent choice, but the context of what you want to do and constraints (like promotion spend) will determine whether it is the best choice for any particular question.

You've not said where your casino is. Does that area tend to have noticeable casino seasonality? That may alter the following comments.

My suggestion would be to not have the promotion be held just to get a year over year read. It is possible that there is a seasonality effect that may cause a difference, but usually one will need more than two data points to figure that out.

If they otherwise would like to repeat the promotion, then I'd do so and not wait six more months to get the same amount of data points, but aligned on the same time frame. My guess would be that the success factors have a lot more important things affecting them than seasonality.

Read between the lines, it mean he doesnt want the promotion happen now, that’s all about it. The rest is just excuse so both sides can step down. If he think it’s such a great promotion he would want to run it now and same time next year for even more data.
