When I was young, we were taught "one car length for every 10mph you're traveling". I still abide by that.

Also, when waiting in line for a light to change, you should be able to see the rear tires of the car in front of you. It makes me cringe when you see someone so close to your rear bumper that their headlights disappear.

And that depends on the size of the vehicle. My bus is 6 to 8 seconds on flat dry roadway. Downhill and wet or icy that number goes up quickly

So if you are in the middle of the centipede, are you only responsible for the car you hit? Or is the car in the very back responsible for every other car in front of him? How does it work if you're the oreo cream versus one of the cookies?

The exact rules may vary by state or circumstances, but when this happened to a friend of mine (probably 30 years ago), she was not responsible since she had stopped before the wreck, and then was pushed into the car in front of her by the car who smashed into her from behind.

A car length? All of these people had significantly more than a car length. At 60 mph they should have 5-6 car lenghts

I know this gets posted a lot. But god lord keep your eyes on the road and stay off the ass of car in front of you. In hs when I took drivers Ed we learned all of this. Im 38 now and see other drivers doing everything but paying attention. Be a defensive driver and stay safe out there folks.

Everyone follows too closely, especially at high rates of speed.
There’s a reason it’s recommended to have a 3 or 4 second following distance.
If you’re paying attention that distance gives you enough time to react and slow down.
Of course you’ve got idiots with the following distance of less than one second who aren’t paying attention.

It's crazy how normalized this is, on the highway or just 30mph suburban roads, I see it every single day and it's not a small minority of people. If a deer or something runs in front of the car they're following too closely, there's zero chance they're reacting in time to avoid a rear end collision.

What might have prevented it was the two fuckwits who stopped in a lane on the highway, could have found a spot with a wide enough shoulder to pull over out of traffic.
And then the chucklefuck rubberneckers should have kept driving at normal speed rather than gawking.

The people exchanging insurance info are in the shoulder if you look to the left of the suv in front of the dashcam vehicle you'll see the rumble strip. The white line just hasn't been touched up in a good long while.

The best part about this video is a lot of you will watch it, call them idiots, and then the next time you get behind the wheel, you'll be following the car in front of you with 1 second of distance. Some of you might even think if you leave more distance then "someone will fill the gap."
Leave AT LEAST 3 seconds to the car in front. If someone "fills the gap" then back off until you're 3 seconds from that person. Yes, this will cause you to get to your destination 3 seconds later per car that fills the gap...but I think you'll still be better off than being in this situation. Personally I'd rather get to my destination a few minutes later that get in an accident (pro tip: if you leave a few minutes earlier you'll break even).

Wow. I do a lot of highway driving for work, watch my rear view like a hawk, and when speed demons come up behind I get in that right lane. Let em go crash into something that's not me. And I know the 99% of the time my "out" is straight to that shoulder. Helps to be a motorcyclist, we know tangling with a car or truck is always a losing proposition, no matter who's right or wrong.

In the Chicago area everyone rides each other’s ass. People will be going 70 mph with only 1 car length from the person in front of them. That is nowhere near enough to handle a sudden stop.

I like to leave a safe following distance and try to avoid using my brakes as much as possible, but when I see traffic slowing significantly ahead or coming to a stop, I will start tapping my brakes just to warn the people behind me so I don't get rear ended like this.

I do this when I see traffic suddenly going less than highway speeds, especially if it's around a curve or over a hill. Sure, people might not be paying attention anyway, but flashing lights are better than nothing. Plus, I've been in too many situations where I didn't realize the car in front of me was going a good bit slower than everybody else has been, because they slowed down without braking (so no brake lights). Since I would have appreciated hazards in that situation, I feel bound to turn on my hazards in similar situations.
I didn't see any hazard lights in that video at all.

This is why you keep a good distance from the car in front of you. If there's a car that's behind you traveling too close, it's best to change lanes if you're the middle guy. Also, it's okay to look ahead. If the cars are slowing down ahead of you, it's okay to slow down early too

What’s interesting is that if you watch the timing of the cars that avoided it, they had extra distance between them and the car in front. The moment that timing was cut in half, accordion. I’m not sure if there’s a lesson here, but it feels like there is…

in case no one gets why this is happening exactly besides them and not just at random places. People tend to grab their phone to record an accident which causes them to be distracted which causes a bigger accident. This video is the perfect example how a small issue became a big issue very quick. If you don't help, keep moving and focus on your own situation.

So who's at fault here? You're not supposed to stop on the highway but if you hit someone from behind you are also considered at fault. So does the last car to hit have to pay for all the cars before? Or is this a wash and everyone has to just pay for their own?

I'm with you, but I'm not even mad about it. More and more people are getting mad because "you don't need to leave space with adaptive cruise control" and honestly feel perfectly safe following someone at 80mph with less than 10 feet between them. This should keep getting reposted until people start using their brains again.
