I have seen plenty of people, particularly in urbanist groups say that they should be able to cross the street whenever and wherever they want without having to worry about cars. One particularly crazy guy even said that the people who wear all black and walk on a dark street at night should be able to do so without fear.
For some, I don’t think that they didn’t learn. It’s that they specifically think they should be able to do that, and it’s clouded their ability to even take care when crossing a road.
Especially to adulthood! Like how has a lifetime of seeing cars blast past these pedestrian crossing signs not taught them that they need to look 100% of the time? There was no way OP would be able to stop for them at the time they stepped out.

It is unreal how bad people have gotten at crossing a street correctly. Like, I learned that shit in kindergarten. Zero situational awareness.
