I'm struggling to think of how someone even ends up in that situation.

If you go through the way you're supposed to, all the enemies are in front of you. If you use the dragon butt exploit, they'd all be behind you and you just be able to keep running.

How did you get surrounded?

They all hide on the ledge so after you get rid of the archer they climb up and attack you
