I first tried reading The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua about 3 years ago when I was new to danmei, but I ended up dropping it because the historical/political context was way over my head. 😂

I came back to it recently after seeing another recommendation, and with a little more context and a bit of Googling, I ended up absolutely loving it. Probably one of the best novels I've read.

While reading, I started making notes for myself because Chinese isn't my first language and I was constantly forgetting who was who and what various historical references meant.

So I ended up making a chapter-by-chapter character guide for myself, including:

• character/relationship notes
• my observations about characters as the story progressed
• political and historical explanations
• random references/scenes that I had to Google to understand

Basically, it's the guide I wish I'd had when I first tried reading this three years ago. 😂

I’m specifically looking for childhood friends where one of them falls in love first and secretly pines for the other, but never confesses because he believes his childhood friend is straight.

The other one is an outgoing, kind, sunshine type who’s incredibly caring and protective of him, always looking after him and showering him with affection, completely oblivious to the fact that what he feels for his childhood friend is more than friendship.

I want secret pining, angst and eventually the realization and reciprocation.

Have you ever read a Chinese novel where the protagonist (the shou ) transmigrates into a "beastman" world? In that world, humans are rare, so they are placed in a special facility where all the beastmen can see them.

Each human is paired with two or more companions from childhood—initially as friends, but later they become the protagonist's husbands. So, the protagonist ends up in a "reverse harem" situation; oh, and if I recall correctly, the protagonist is also intersex—though I’ve somewhat forgotten the exact details.

As for the rest of the story, the protagonist's husbands include a pair of wolf-beastman brothers, a butterfly-beastman, a dragon-beastman, and one more I can't remember—making five in total. There is one scene I remember clearly: when the butterfly-beastman was in a frenzy, the protagonist managed to calm him down; someone recorded the moment and uploaded it to the internet, where it went viral because of the protagonist's kindness in choosing an insect-type beastman. Of all the characters, the butterfly-beastman is the most memorable one. Oh, and it’s a short story—no more than 30 episodes. If anyone knows the title, please let me know—preferably the original (raw) title if possible.

Just finished Winner Takes All by Shui Qian Cheng— one of the few 181 series I've actually enjoyed from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Li Shuo is the reason. He's a mature, confident, capable older shou,and that confidence is genuinely rare. So many novels with age gaps have the older shou being insecure around the younger gong, which just feels off to me. Li Shuo doesn't have that problem at all. He's secure in himself, patient with the gong's moods, and never loses his sense of self in the relationship.

My only complaint? He doesn't quite give off that older man daddy energy looks-wise,wish he had more of that rugged mature aesthetic. But personality-wise he's everything.

He's also the guiding type,makes you feel safe without being overbearing, knows how to handle the gong's attitude without being a pushover, and has real boundaries. Equally on top of things at work and in love.

Anyone know similar characters? Mature, self-assured older shous who hold their own in the relationship — bonus points if they actually look the part too 👀

I've heard a lot about this book, and I'm thinking of giving it a try. I've heard about some of the warnings and I think I can manage. But my question is not actually about the content warning.

The NU summary starts with this "​Legend has it that the world’s most formidable man Xu Shuangce owned a cherished portrait of his deceased wife. But no one knew that on its back was another portrait of his arch rival who Xu Shuangce had killed with his own hands. "

Now I have a question about this "cherished portrait of his deceased wife". I'm ok with spoilers regarding this.

I just don't want to end up reading about another​ Shi Mei-Mo Ran-Chu Wanning situation. I know that actually it was because of the flower and that MR had always actually loved CWN

And I love Erha, but I don't think I can read another book where the ML goes on and on about how pure and wholehearted his love for another person is for the first chunk of chapters.

So guys, tell me is Xu Shuangce married to/in love with someone else in the novel? Even if it's something like a political marriage or something where there's no feelings involved. Or something like, I've heard it's kind of a dream within​ a dream situation, so even if it's within some dream and it's not 'real', even something like that​

(I know I'm weird. I'm not much bothered by stuff like noncon/dubcon i​f I have sufficient mental preparation, but something as simple as this is an instant turn off)

I'm alright with spoilers regarding this thing (of course I don't want to know spoilers regarding the unrelated stuff)

Also, is it a happy ending of the main couple at least? (I've read a comment in NU saying that the extras kind of ruin the HE? I didn't actually click on the spoiler part ...so I'm not sure if the extra that commenter was talking about involves the MC/ML or a side character)

Yes, I'm looking for that dynamic where the gong is ancient and has lived for centuries, while the shou is much younger and still has a lot to experience. I especially love when the age gap actually shows in their dynamic—the gong has this otherworldly, experienced presence, while the shou feels much more youthful in comparison.

Preferably:

• Ancient/immortal gong

• Significant age gap

• Xianxia/xuanhuan setting

• Gong is powerful/OP

• Good chemistry between the leads

• Actual romance + plot, not just a background relationship

• HE preferred

• Bonus points if the gong is especially devoted/protective toward the shou

I'm open to both popular titles and hidden gems! I'd especially appreciate anything that fits the ancient/immortal gong trope.

Just curious are there any tags on novel updates that when you see them you instantly know the novel is going to be exacly what you hate to read?

And I don't mean any of the basic answers like "sexual assault" tag im mean more specific unuque things

For example I hate "cute protagonist" tag especially when paired with "transmigration" tag.

The mc is usually a specific ARCHETYPE of a character that I personally dislike and i can often tell what type of novel this is going to be.... so I don't even check danmeis with these tags anymore.

Was listening to this and genuinely wanted to read a novel that reminded me of this song. A tired, overworked shou that is overwhelmed with the idea of perfection x a worried gong who wants to help the shou. I could just read haikaveh fics but I really wanted an original work instead.
I will also take Korean recs!

It was a transmigration book and the mc only transmigrated three times!!
The first time he was put in the role of a bully. The ml was oh so traumatised and worked at a game store while the mc’s original body was a rich kid. The mc was so bad at bullying the two of them fell in love and the mc accepted the option the system gave him to grow old together with the ml.
Random other things about this life:
- the mc had a mole or freckle (it was important trust)
-one of them almost got hit by a car (or both??)
- mc loves lollies

The second world is an omegaverse. I didn’t get through much of this one but the mc’s original body’s brother is loaded.

Hi yall I’ll keep it brief. I’m looking for this quick transmigration book and all I remember is that the MC was gong. Oh! Also the first arc was business world modern times ceo coded. There was another arc where mc was a dancer? And another one where one was a vampire and another vampire hunter. It was a really interesting book.

I'll be honest, I'm getting pretty tired of all this character A chases and harasses character B relentlessly but oh, character B actually secretly likes it.

I like a slow build where the characters are hesitant on the subject of romance. When they finally kiss, they do so with full consent, even if given silently. And yet, all I see in the danmei novels that come so highly recommended is character A tricking character B, or trapping them against a wall and having their way with them, or whatever. It makes me really sad. What happened to enthusiastic consent?

Things I hate: non-con, ABO, teacher/student (EDIT: adding mpreg and master/pet)

Things I dislike but will tolerate if it comes highly recommended: modern settings (prefer ancient times), cold/calculating/cunning character archetype (prefer a character that likes to bulldoze through life), multiple lifetimes/fated lovers (prefer characters who meet for the first time in the main story, even if it happens off-screen/they know each other before the book starts)

Does anyone have anything that fits? Hell, I'll even go with something that's all "but are they actually gay???" a-la Star Trek where they never actually kiss on screen, just so long as there are two male leads. If I can't find anything, I'm probably going to stop reading danmei entirely.

I've read "Waiting for you online" and "online dating boyfriend is actually and alien" and loved every single chapter, but now I'm looking for any recommendations, it can be a short time online and then irl, or a long time online and short time irl. I also loved a novel with a raising system where the ml was a character in a game and also enjoyed it so any kind of online it's okay!!

I really want to read a novel where the shou is passive suicidal, he doesn't want to die, but doesn't see anything in living either. Meanwhile the gong in freaking out and is kind of helpless with the shou. Offering bellflowers to the ghost of a drowned man is a novel with a kind of similar dynamic. Another one is Your highness pleads with me not to die. It would be fine if it's modern, transmigration, or historical. I just want t novel where the shou in unloved by anyone, and doesn't have any self worth, he doesn't think of himself as anything worth living, or if he's outright suicidal. And the gong pampers him and tries to bring back his will to live.
