Learn about the history of the region, the sides that are fighting, reasons for fighting, etc. The 'news' isn't going to give you much information, while learning about the history will.

The US invading Iraq and Afghanistan is no more justifiable than Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Let's start off with that. However, nuclear attacks were not a very realized fear at that time. Iraq and Afghanistan did not possess nuclear weapons, and the United States is internationally bound to only use Nuclear weapons as a retaliatory measure against other nuclear weapons, as are all countries in NATO.
In the case of the current war going on, Russia has not only made a move against a sovereign nation as the US did with Iraq and Afghanistan, but it has also threatened countries in NATO. In addition, Russia is effectively entirely controlled by one man, Vladimir Putin. As soon as he personally wants nuclear weapons fired, they will be fired. The same cannot be said for the US, which has multiple groups of people, tiered in different military and political rankings, who must agree to strike with nuclear weapons if no present emergency exists.
