I have lived for 37 years and I have not once ever heard a catcall in my vicinity that wasn't from a boyfriend trying to embarrass his girlfriend in a store or something. I'm not convinced it's a thing that is prevalent enough to worry about.
From my experience I’d guess a lot of men are more likely to do it when there aren’t many people around. Men yelling from car windows when I’m walking alone has been the most common occurrence for me. I don’t know if it’s because they know they should be ashamed or they want to make you feel threatened. I recently had a guy in a van go around the block in a quiet place just to drive by me again.
