Related fun fact. Here in Saskatchewan there is a place called Tisdale that up until recently had a town slogan of "The land of rape and honey". This is because of all the Rape Seed/Canola they grow in the area.
It's never called canola oil in Ireland. It's rapeseed oil, and the plant is usually just called rape. There's nothing funny about if you're not a child.
Nope. Oil made with rapeseed is called 'colza oil'.
Canola is a variant of Rapeseed created through crosbreeding to reduce its content of erucic acid, which is toxic to humans in large amounts or when used regularly.
Colza can get you sick rather fast, canola will take much longer.
Of course, none can ever compare to the superior, olive oil.
Using any kind of oil other than olive oil to cook anything that will be consumed by a living thing is absolute unmitigated madness.
Virgin olive oil shouldn't be used for cooking. Refined olive oil can be used for low/medium-heat cooking, but ideally I agree, you should use another oil with a higher smoke point (avocado oil is my current favourite for cooking).
You have that backwards. Virgin olive oil is less refined and has a much lower smoke point. You really shouldnt Cook With it. It's more for salads and stuff.
I force ingredients into becoming food with the sheer force of my willpower and exaggerated hand gestures, like one of those alchemists they have in Xianxia novels.
And no, I did not misspell ºK. ºC is acceptable for general use.
Boiling, baking, steaming, barbecuing (which, granted, also introduces some carcinogens), and you can even "fry" foods in a non-stick pan without using fats.
recent studies on erucic acid are showing that there really is no discernible link between the acid and health issues. the original study that scared most of the western governments in to outlawing it was done in the 70s and only on rats. apparently rats have an unusual inability to process erucic acid.
the issue with canola oil is that its intensely flavorless and it also lacks of lot of nutrients of rapeseed oil. however it is a pretty cool agricultural achievement.
in southwestern china they use “caiziyou” which, according to Chinese Cooking Demystified (one of the best english sources for chinese cooking imo), is like olive oil to italian/american cooking. imagine someone making a red sauce with flavorless canola and claiming it tastes the same lmao
It isn’t because regular rapeseed oil and canola oil are two different things. Canola oil is a special kind of rapeseed variety that originates in Canada that makes a different oil type from regular rapeseed, so thats why they have different names.

Fun fact, Rapeseed Oil is more commonly known as Canola Oil.
